#95 - 2.2 - That moment you realize the terrifying and awesome power of the kale shake: running is going to get you where you ABSOLUTELY NEED to be sooner, but walking (and occasionally stopping and concentrating) is the only thing keeping the turtle in his shell. Add to that a canine running partner spooked by the approaching thunderstorm and you understand how my morning started. Good times.
I wouldn't have made it past the next tree or bush. You have a huge advantage running on a lot of trails. My route home is pretty much 100 % residential for the last 1/2 mile. I've sweat my way through that last stretch wishing there was just a tree, a lone tree, and I would be good to go.
I run through a lot of residential areas on my routes, but, I do have some emergency spots. Last year alone I had to dart between two houses through their back yards to get to a patch of woods. Another morning I jumped down an embankment right next to a school bus stop just as the bus was picking up the students (there was no line of sight, so I went for it ). Once my brain decides that relief can be at hand, its game over, that's the spot, or else...
And those are just the close calls. I make countless stops. I remember I ran with my wife two days in a row pacing her during her marathon build last year, and had to dart off into the woods both times. She was like "so you do this on every run?" I'm usually not that bad. I think running at her pace resulted in that perfect oscillation. It was like running with her turned my bowels into the Tacoma Narrows.
Anyhow, today's run had no such excitement.
