So, we haven't talked much about fueling workouts and eating well.

Does anybody have any questions about nutrition or references to good books or some basic things on eating for the sport?

It takes food to support daily exercise. Good food. I think the biggest mistakes I've made in the past were #1 eating like I worked out, even on days when I didn't. #2 The all-or-nothing approach. Deciding I'm going to eat PERFECTLY... thereby making it impossible to do so.

These nice cold days make me want to cook. I have been resisting making potatoes and gravy, but I am eating oatmeal and rice/beans/veggies to get that warm meal feeling. On the weekend, or maybe even tonight, I'll roast a chicken or something. I think you have to have something each week. Just me. My husband has the sweet tooth, and I have to make sure there's something around, but not too much. I could take or leave the cookies and cake, which only leaves more for him. He gets aggravated when I have too much around. So I will get him ONCE slice of cheese cake. That's it.

His lack of control is nutty to me, but I try to respect it. Don't be an arse. If I said to him "then don't eat it, you don't have to eat it".. that would make me an arse. He runs marathons, and is quite fit and slim, but it's a struggle with the naughty food.

I have not hooked up the TV here. Amazing how much I'm getting done, the workouts, the reading, the stretching and productivity. That TV is a killer. TIME KILLER. I've also lost weight. TV = lethargy = mindless food and drink. I may not hook it up at all.

Thanks for that hint! Sorry for the way you found out. I've never taken vit C powder. I stick to a vitamin that's got it in there. Hope today is "less productive"

Today was an off day for my training program. We went to the performance sports expo and spent some money. I bought a wetsuit, a triathlon backpack transition bag and my wife got new bike shoes. Then right next door was an Adidas outlet event, so we had to go in. Running shorts and shirts for $10 ea, jackets for $20, etc. we all came out of that with some new clothes or shoes. Overall a fun day... Not a cheap day, but lots of great bargains. What better way to spend a cold, rainy Saturday.

Hello??? Anybody out there?

Good workouts this weekend.  The thermometer hit 40 yesterday, so I got out for a run.  It felt good to get outside!  Then I played paintball with my sons and a group of their friends.  Burned almost 1000 calories chasing those 16 yr olds.  Back in the pool this morning for 1650 yds.  Good way to wake up.

I hope everyone's health and training is good.  Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!!

Last week I did 3 run (hill, speed, & long) workouts, and 2 swims 2500-3000 yards each and a lot of sleeping. Nothing on the bike. So I need to sort this bike, spin, trainer thing ASAP!

This weekend we are headed to Miami and I can't wait to be warm. Part of me just wants to lie in the sun all weekend. OR the shade for that matter... just soak up some heat.

GOALS for this week. 3 runs, 2 swims, and one hill ride on the bike. I'm thinking maybe tomorrow afternoon and I can bundle up and ride the bike up and down the mile long hill a few times. That oughtta do me.

Happy Tuesday!

Sorry to be MIA,  much going on both on home front and work and was out of town this weekend.

Was in New Orleans from early Sat to late Mon.  Ran the Rock and Roll half down there. What a great race! I was down there with 7 girlfriends and we had a blast!  I was pleased with my run, 1:54:09, 16/404 age group. Then I ran 5 "bonus" miles to get the 18 I needed for my Boston training.

What's up with everyone this week?

Have not done a THING training-wise since Monday. Better run today!

Runners World just started a new nutrition column. www.runnersworld.com and I've already enjoyed learning a tidbit or two!

Happy Friday, we had a freeze warning here in Atlanta last night. Sounds like a good time to leave for Miami.

Hope you all ride/run/swim far this weekend!

We had VIP status for the race (pays to have connections in the running world) and Mo was right next to us! Very cool!

Also, let me tell you, this was the second time I've run a race as a VIP, and it's hard to go back to being one of the masses. Perks include: private porta potties pre and post race. VIP gear check right in the tent area pre-race and then delivered to the post race "hospitality area" where there is a hot breakfast and a bar.

So the weekend was spent in Miami doing a 5k, husband did 10k and had a PR! I was slow. I'm rededicated to working on my speed.

I get my new trainer set up today!! Need to get my bike in the car and get over to the shop. WOW, at home bricks! it was 32 degrees when I woke up this morning so I'm happy to be getting that indoor trainer.

This week is run-run-run... sprinkling in a little swim and spin and strength training.

Also, going to try to make some dishes with lentils and quinoa. Must fit into wet suit in 3 weeks!

How was the weekend for everyone?

I am curious about your dishes with lentils and quinoa. I love lentils but have not tried quinoa.

I completed my first international distance at the Desert Tri on Sunday. My swim was so slow. My breathing was fine in the cold water. Thanks for the advice on neoprene cap and earplugs.  Because I am 60 my wave was 2nd to last.  I was one of the last people out of the lake. I hardly saw anyone on the bike but I did manage to pass a few people. And a few more on the run. Even though I was slow I finished 3rd in my age group. I am so excited to have accomplished my goal!Laughing

Have a great evening!

Congrats! That is awesome! I hope you enjoyed the experience and I'm glad you didn't have problems with the cold water.I love quinoa. It is quite versatile and full of protein. I can't eat oats so I have made granola bars made with cooked quinoa.

So Chi Town is supposed to be walloped by a big snow. School was cancelled last night, but so far just an easy snow. I guess the big stuff is coming later. I took advantage of the snow day by sleeping in and lounging with a cup of coffee and the paper. BLISS! Haven't been able to do that in some time. My legs are still tired from my 20 mile, and hilly run, this past Sunday so decided to do my intervals tomorrow. Going to take the dogs for a walk in the snow and do the first round of shoveling. Figure I'll get my workout by shoveling snow several times though out the day. Forecast is for 10 inches. Yikes!

Ok. I just signed up for a 30 day challenge at Hardbody Outdoor Fitness.
I will be taking my son and hubby with me. The workouts are 4x a week at 5:30 am. Just looking at the videos I feel like I am on the biggest loser! I am in for some pain even though they will be modifying it because of my ankle but still challenging me and pushing me to my limits. Me and my son are kind of scared. It will be exhausting so I will only add swimming to it.

I am suppose to start on Monday which works great as we alsoigned up for the Biggest loser Challenge at my church that starts on Monday.

I will keep you posted on my progress and log the workouts.

FYI- this is my first week wearing normal shoes. Yeah! I couldn't find comfortable shoes but my PT recommended Dansko. Costly at $125 to $150 a pair. They are super comfortable.

Lovey

Oh that's so great!!! So proud of you!

Quinoa is easy to cook, is quicker than brown rice, and has a relatively lot of protein for a grain. It works really well in cold salads. I'm learning a lot about grains and trying to eat less wheat as it is predominately GMO and not good for us.

I've learned that peanuts are not a nut, which is why the healthy nuts are referred to as "tree nuts'. And legumes are good for you, but lentils which are NOT legumes, are even better! So that's the reason for the new dishes around my house. Still eating brown rice and rice pastas, but needed a little something else. My husband loves the quinoa and our latin friends say that it's usually a breakfast thing for them... add honey and cinnamon etc. I like raisins myself, and I like Oatmeal in the morning. Always good to be flexible though!

Hump day.

I would share my bike drama with you, but it's just too annoying. Suffice it to say I got my new trainer, and my bike was damaged and now I have a rental (for free) and haven't been on it. I need to get past this... I have to train.

I just get so angry LOOKING at it. MY bike has to be sent to TREK to have the entire frame replaced.
