If everyone could just get and stay healthy, things would be much better! I hope you feel better soon.

Question, today I ran my long run 48 minutes at 6.0 mph. Average heart rate of about 152 which is the bottom of zone 2 for me. I feel like 152 isn't high enough, but want to make sure I can run the entire time. Should I just run some intervals? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Also, funny story, last weekend I went to go swim. Right when i got there I realized I had forgotten my towel. Due to time constrants, I had no choice but to swim. I ended up drying off with those brown paper towels and an extra shirt that I had. Moral: Make she you have a towel before you to the pool.

That depends on what your goal is. If it to get your heart rate up then yes I would do intervals with speed work. If it is just a run and you want to run the entire time, 152 seems like a good heart rate to me.

I'm in agreement with the 152 heart rate. My aerobic heart rate right now is 154-156 - I'm "working" - but I can keep going.

Same as what Mel said - it all depends on your goals. Speed work at a local track, fartleks, hills etc will all help with speed.

Speed hurts

So swimming tonight was tough.  I could barely do a 200 without drudging my arms through.  You know I was totally sinking in the water!  But I did 1200......I am way off my training plan.  Just for kicks, I looked at it...this week I was suppose to swim 3x for a total of 12000 yds/mtrs.  Yep, I am swimming 2x and probably 2000 total! Oh well...life goes on.

I am trying to stick to some schedule of 15-25 miles running per week...bike 2-3 times and swim 2x.  But in the next few weeks, I need to get serious otherwise that half ironman on June 21 is going to hurt....and I mean not being able to sit afterwards or walk for 2 days!

Hey - do any of you wear compression clothing? Compression socks? Leg sleeves? etc?

Check out these reviews:

http://www.steadystatesports.com/Recovery_Articles.html

Curious if any of you use these types of products and what your experience is/was with them....do you use them just for recovery? Racing? Training? All?

I have never tried compression clothing. However I was running with someone last wek and she mentioned that she was wearing compression pants for running and that it makes a huge difference. I have spent a lot of money on running and tri clothing this past year and I am not allowing myself to buy anymore no matter how good someone says something is. Maybe in a year or two I''ll think about getting compression pants.

Great news - I went on a run by the canal today and I wore shorts and a t-shirt. That felt so nice not having to wear all the layers. However I brought a water bottle with me and I felt that extra 2 lbs or so on my back. In the winter I wasn't carrying water with me.

By the way it was 10C when I went running. Some of you might say that is too cold for shorts and t-shirt. When you are used to below freezing temperatures 10C is a heatwave.

Plans for the weekend: Hockey tournaments. And no I am not playing. I am providing medical coverage both saturday and sunday - 2 six hour shifts. I plan on waking up early and working out before I need to work. So much for sleeping in on the weekend.

Lynn - time to kick up the training. I'll do it with you as looking at my logs from the past couple of weeks compared to this week I have been slacking.

Mel- Thanks for the encouragement.  I officially start new job on Tuesday, so I am really unsure of how I will be able to keep up with training. Knowing you are counting on me helps!

Compression- yep, I have it in my gameplan to try it this year.Just don't know which brand or when. But I always am real sore after a half-IM, and with a 3-5 hour drive, compression wear is nice.

Mel- sorry- I am sending bad weather towards you.  Just had dinner with a friend who flew in from DC....where it was 42c today.  We were at -2c tonight.  Snow showers Sat evening/Sunday.  Run sat am was at -2c, and heading south.  Sorry....

I was going to ride my bike out on the lakefront today.....woke up to a wintry mix of snow and ice.  Wind is blowing hard.  Just to make sure, it's not December, right?

You are right, its almost April I went out for a ride last Thursday and with the wind it was too cold for me and I also quickly realized that my bike needed a tune up. It was shifting horribly and the brakes didn't sound good.

Exciting about the marathon! Have you run Chicago before? Like the year is was 90?

Thanks for the help on the heart rate and running question. My goal for those longer runs is to just run the whole time, so I will just stick to that and eventually the speed with develop. I can already see a difference in speed and endurance during my soccer games.

After this year, I have determined that March is a useless month that should be just skipped over.

My family lives in Fargo - where all the floods and blizzards are happening....not good.

T- Sorry to hear about your family. I hope they are safe.

Yes, I did Chicago last year as my first-ever marathon.  Thankfully my sister did not video-tape me after the race, or else I would have never signed up again!

Yes, Tammy.  But can we adjust it from Feb 15-March 21?  I looked today--8 weeks till the first duathlon (with lots of hills, which I have done nada) and 12 weeks till the first HIM. Grrr

I hope your family is doing okay Tami. I'm from Minnesota (near Duluth) so I can imagine what they are going through. I heard another 10 inches of snow is expeted this week. Ugh!

Just registered for my first race! First a sprint in mid May and then Olympic in July. Woohoo!

Pine Barrens Spring Triathlon - Mary 15, 2009

Massachusetts State Olympic Triathlon - July 26, 2009

And we are going to buy our bikes next weekend (I'm a real beginner). Right now I'm leaning towards the entry level Trek (1.2). What road bikes do you all have? What was your starter bike? Any suggestions of things to look for or stay away from?

Hey all, Good luck to all our families up north. I hope they can catch a break with the weather soon.

Krista-I have the entry level Giant. I think I picked it because it has an extra set of brakes on the handlebars. I've only used them once or twice. I know others who have had the Trek, and liked it. I'm not sure if you plan on getting a wetsuit or renting one, but I would look into the temperature of the water, especially in May. I ended up swimming a sprint in about 62 degree water last year (in July) with no wetsuit. It wasn't the best idea.

Thanks Peanut! I think I am going to rent a wetsuit for May. I don't want to freeze and cramp up on the first leg.

I have another question for everyone. What clothes do you race in and what did you race in when you were a beginner? Did you buy a trisuit for your first race or stick with a regular swimsuit? Change for the bike/run? I feel like there is so much info on training out there but hard to find the details on the actual logistics.

I have the Bianchi C2C 928 Carbon Road Bike.....just got the 2009 Felt B2 tri bike (LOVIN' IT!).

Clothing....

Depends on the distance. If shorter distance, dress appropriately for fast transitions as there isn't a place to change etc. Swimsuit would be fine and just throw on some shorts after getting out of the water.

My first one is a relatively short distance (1/2 mile swim, 24 mile bike and 4 mile run) but I'm also signed up for an olympic distance (.9 mile swim, 22 mile bike, 6 mile run). So you bike and run in a regular swimsuit?! Sounds uncomfortable!

I was under the impression that if I wore a wetsuit I could just wear regular tri shorts and shirt underneath. I have in the past for Sprints worn a swim suit with tri shorts for the swim and just thrown on a shirt for the bike and the run, but don't really want to wear the swim suit for an Olympic distance.

P- Just wear the tri shorts over the swimsuit (both under wetsuit)...rip off the wetsuit and go.  (As long as the swimsuit gives you enough support on the run)./.....or since you have the tri shorts, buy a tri top to wear and write it off as additional workout gear.  Believe me, you will get a lot of wear out of it!  I personally own 4 pair tri shorts, 4 tri tops, and 2 swim suits (for the pool).  After 1 season of constantly washing 1-2 tri shorts after running or biking daily, I upped my wardrobe.

Ok ladies----WHO BEAT FEBRUARY with MARCH's numbers?

- I am tempted to jump on my bike to ride 1 mile tonight  Run is also off by 3 miles....but swimming, strenght and scuba is up!

Ok ladies----WHO BEAT FEBRUARY with MARCH's numbers?

That statement made me go back and look at my numbers. My first reaction was - that is all I did. When I see that I only had 5 hours of cycling for a whole month that doesn't seem like a lot. Especally since once I get outdoors I would do a 2 hour bike rides.

And strentgth as under 2 hours means I only got 2 -3 of those workouts in. And my goal is 2-3 a week. Whoops.

My run mileage looks consistent - only 2 miles difference.

Had an extra 3k in February so I guess I wasn't as consistent in the pool.

My goal is to make april a good training month. I have 2 - 3 races planed for this month. Only registered for 1 so far though.

Last year I wore cycle shorts and a shirt underneath my wet suit. I didn't bother to wear a bathing as there was no need for it. Plus this way I was able to wear a proper bra. A 2nd plus, your clothes were wet which kept you cool on the bike. When I was racing in bery hot temps that was nice. And by the time you got to the run you were dry.

Last night I had a jewish orthodox wedding (definately a one of a kind experience) so I didn't get a chance to workout at night. Ig ot to work late today and had plans of going for a swim tonight. However we got a call at work that someone wanted to see a demonstration of our product tomorrow. All of a sudden what I was working on got put aside and I had to prepare the demo. I ended up staying at work until just after 8 and never made it to the gym.

I am a bit dissapointed I didn't get a workout in. Atleast tomorrow is supposed to be nice for my outdoor group run.

However the past 2 days the back of my heel has been bothering me. It doesn't hurt if I walk or run but hurts just standing on it. Yesterday I could only last a couple of minutes standing until the pain started. This morning I was at the grocery store and I found myself often leaning on one foot to not the feel the pain in the other foot. Debating if running tomorrow is even good for me. Sitting all day once I got to work let my foot rest. I haven't been too much on my feet lately to know if I still have the pain.
