Managed to get done 10k tonight - still pretty cold out there (about freezing).  1 mile warmup with 3 tempo miles and a couple to warm down.  Got the tempo runs done in 7:40 per mile on aggregate - not great but not terrible.  I was hoping for about :10 faster than that per mile, but didn't have it in me.

I may try doing a 1000yd TT tomorrow.  It will make the 3000yds for the day go quick and I've wanted to see where I am.  On Tuesday I managed a ~7:05 500yd effort.  Pretty decent improvement from this summer.  I'd like to try and extend and see what I can hold for 1000.  I wasn't tired after the 500, so perhaps what I have been doing is starting to pay some dividends.

Still pretty much ignoring my bike - poor thing.  Until I get my half done I am going to try and get a couple hours per week on it.  I won't be breaking any records until the run is done and it warms up somewhat, I think.

Nice run.  I tried to do 8:00 for a tempo run yesterday and it wore me out!

Tempo runs are supposed to wear you out.  I did the three miles in 7:30, 7:35, then 7:50.  Kinda petered out there on the last one - you know, worn out!

I only started doing them (and some intervals) about 4-6 weeks ago.  I've been doing a little sole searching the last few days I think my problem with them is more psychological than physical.  Yes, I'm definitely spent physically but I'm finding them very difficult mentally.

When I started running regularly over the summer I decided to do whatever was necessary to be able to keep going and make running a habit.  Over the summer and fall that mean just putting in the miles or time that my plan called for.  I got pretty good at listening to my body and I've been pretty good about finding a pace that I can sustain for the duration of run.  I'm starting to think that this is back firing a little bit when comes to intervals and tempo runs.   In other words, I'm trying to run at a pace that I can't sustain but I've spent the last several months conditioning my mind to avoid this.  I'm sure this sounds pretty silly but I'm a believer that the mental aspects of training and competing are just as important as the physical one.

No doubt - if you want to run fast you need to train fast (at least sometimes).  Start off with some fartleks and just start getting some feel for going faster than is comfortable.  Then start working in some tempo work.  It'll get there.

----

On my end I did end up doing a 1000yd TT today as part of my workout.  Managed to pop it out in 14:05.  I followed up after that with a 500yd TT in 7:05.  So it looks like the dry land and speed pool work is paying off  I just need to start slowly working up to 5000yd+ workouts for my May expedition (which makes me more nervous than anything I am doing all year.)

Didn't get out and do any formal training but spent the whole day snowboarding and was curious if anyone knew what sort of exercise I could compare it to.

On a field trip with students this weekend in the mountains at about 5,300feet above sea level.

Tried to do my 21 min run and had a hell of a time. I had to walk twice. The path was very hilly and the altitude did a dusy on me.

I feel proud that I did the run, but slightly dissappointed in my time. Almost two full minutes slower than on flat ground near where I live.

How was your training today? I could use some inspiration from hearing about your dedication.

2600yd swim today.  Arms were lead weights due to the hard shoulder/back/tri workout yesterday.  I swam until they turned the lights out on me at the pool.

Definitely no swimming records today, though!

My wife and I are going to the rock wall gym for date night tomorrow.  If it is as fun as I remember, I can see us getting back into that.

Have a great weekend

Today I found a tri bike on craigslist.  Quintana roo from about ten years ago.  650 wheels and aluminum frame.  Not light but the dura ace components felt nice.   Seemed a good buy at the ask of $300.  The guy has owned it since new and proved it to me.

But then I rode it.  I've not ridden any tt bikes before.  It was either too long of a frame, or I will be forever unable to ride a tri bike til I lose all of my gut.   I just couldn't make the pedals go smoothly.   When is a bargain not a bargain?  No bike.

It sure did roll better than my commuter.

Pensacola Bay Bridge Swim.

I've never come close to swimming that far.  It is the only decent OW swim near us, though, so not much choice in race length (unless I choose the 10k - uhhh, no).  Should be quite a challenge.

Keep looking - you probably didn't want the 650 wheels, anyway.

I have been very busy the last 4 weeks.  Today I got back from Charlotte, NC.  No trips, travel or company until April.  I am looking foward to getting my routine back.  Saturday I rode a Computrainer in Charlotte at In Motion.  In Motion is a private gym with personal trainers.  They have 6 computrainers.  Myself and a couple of guys from Charlotte did 16 miles of a section of KONA.  It was a great workout.  I was dripping wet with sweat when I got done.  It was a tougher one hour workout than I would have done on the road.  It was great to have an opportunity to get a cycle workout without my bike when I am in Charlotte.  One of the personal trainers let me use his road bike which was set up really close to my size.  In the future I will be using in Motion when I travel to Charlotte.

I have a half marathon coming up in a couple of weeks.  I did a 13.2 mile run Friday in Charlotte.  I did it in under 2 hours.  I had done a half marathon in Orlando Race December 5th and ran a couple of minutes over 2 hours.  My goal is to get under two hours for the ING half in Miami.  I feel good about hitting that number.

Good to see the active discussion with the group.

BamaDC Disney 70.3 is getting closer!

Good 26 mile ride this morning with the wind.  The temps back to normal in Florida.  Crazy as it sounds felt I good to get up at 3:30AM and get the biking in.  Tonight back to the YMCA pool.  Plan is to have a good training this week.  I would like to get in at least 13 hours of training in which is doable with my schedule this week.  Good luck to the group.

I'd keep looking.  650 are a pain in the arse.  My wife has a 650 bike and its a pain trying to find good tubes and nice tires.  Her next bike will be a custom 700, prob. a Guru.

After two days off I went out for my long run today - oof. Wanted 10-11 miles and quit after eight. Legs were burning after two. Called it after 8 - surprised I held an 8:45 pace (what is typically my long slow distance pace). Legs are a ball of soreness now. I had been a tad bit under the weather this weekend, but never thought it was this bad.

So only 16 miles last week and this week's start is for suck. I need to HTFU and get some running done - the half getting pretty darn close.

I feel your pain.  I two weekends of really crappy long runs with some equally crappy runs between.  I had a cold which I didn't think was that bad but apparently it took a lot out of me.
