Subject: RE: Training Day Nutrition?

.... He thinks I need to be taking 3 whey protein shakes thought out the day. ......On my training days heres what I take:

.......I think I will need to consume more good calories as my workouts start to get longer distances.   What are most of you doing and is whey protein shakes needed in my diet?

Three shakes a day would be pretty accessive, but weight lifters tend to be that way   I'm married to one....anyhow, your diet looks great and for as long as you feel good, your training intensity is good (and developing), your resting heart rate is lowering or maintaining, and you're not losing weight, it should work out great, for now....but when one of those starts to change, as they will with more distance, you're right, you'll need to up your good calories and protein being one of them.  I've read that consuming protein before an intense cardio workout can upset your stomach so don't throw a shake in there, but I would definitely throw one in within 20-30 minutes after a particularly intense session but always use a simple carb with it as well as a chewable Vit C, that helps in absorbtion to the depletion muscles.  Oh and definitely add in a shake after a strength training session.

That's my 2 cents but I'd love to hear what others are doing as well.....

Thanks...I was thinking about taking a shake after my strength conditioning.  I'm losing about 1-2 pounds a week, which I need to lose about 25 pounds.   So far I'm making good progress on lowering times and increasing distance.

Subject: This week
Hey everyone, sorry I've been MIA for a while.  Crazy travel week, got back from Seattle on the redeye this morning.  Best part of the week (training wise) was a nice long 10 mile run along the water front downtown.  It was freezing and wet but very scenic.

My weekly totals are:
Swim: 0:56 2625 yds
Bike: 3:15 55.24 miles
Run 2:05 13 miles
Str: 0:30

Hope everyone had a great week!

-Steven

Jersey folks: I guess tomorrow's ride is off ???  Forecast is not the best.  I'm probably going for a 10 mile run around 10:30 let me know if anyone is interested.

On the road again!  Man I can't wait to get on the road again.  Who said that John Denver?  Well I was traveling this week as well so it was the hotel pool and one session in the pain cave and another spin class.  This was an off week for running as I had some tenderness in the bone that I broke; I am assuming this was from upping my miles last week.  I need to learn to slow down when I increase my distance.

The best news is the new bike is in!  And it looks like it will be fit on tuesday!

Here are the totals.

Total - 6:31
Swim - 3:14:18 - 6899 Yards
Bike - 3:16:42 - 58.74 Miles

Interesting that my split was nearly 50/50.

Pretty sick this week, I did nothing past Wednesday, but still managed to lose 6 pounds due to illness - unfortunately, I think it was mostly muscle.   Just started back with a 4 mile run today.  Feeling a bit shakey.  My totals are as follows:

Swim -   2200 yds   1:00
Bike       20 miles     1:05
Run      11.89miles  1:52

Thanks everyone!  I am super excited.  This is clearly a dream bike; that I am way over budget on.  But the deal that I made with the wife was that I was allowed one new bike in 2011 so I better get what I want!  Well with the Di2 and carbon tubeless wheels I am not sure what more I could ask for....but as we all know its not about the bike; it all in the engine!  So I have plenty of work to do!!!

Subject: My Rocket Ship Has Arrived!!!
OK, I have to start by saying I have the best wife in the world.  The deal was that I could have one new bike in 2011 and she would get it for my B-day this friday.  Initially it started with this same frame but the SRAM Red version.  Then when the Red version was delayed and would likely miss my first race I was in a bind.  It was either ride my SuperX or get the team Campi bike or the Di2 bike both of which were nearly 2x the cost of the red version.  In the end the guys at my LBS properly steered me away from the Campi bike and reluctantly ordered the Di2 bike.  This is only the second Di2 bike that they have built.  The first being for one of the shop racers that works for them from time to time.  But after having built and fitted this bike I think that they are converts.  Digital is totally the wave of the future.  If you have not ridden one; you need to!  The best part is how the front derailleur is constantly trimming as the rear derailleur is shifting!

I have a few miles on her outside as part of the fitting; and a proper 2 hour flogging on the computrainer already logged.  I am very lucky to be riding such a bike; I am beyond not worthy.  But very excited at the same time.  I do not want to be that guy showing up to the first race in the super kit; when I should have been spending the same time "tuning the engine".

Well here is a picture after the computrainer session.  She tips the scales at 16.58# with Dura-Race carbon tubeless wheels, dura-Race pedals and a Cobb Saddle.

Greeting All,

I’ve been out of pocket for a while with business travel and a family vacation.  Training lapsed a bit, but I kept up with my running.  Two significant events occurring for me in relation to training.  First, I am getting a swimming instructor.  I’ve recorded myself swimming which really helped in recognizing my weakness, but I simply cannot correct these faults on my own.  It seems like I correct one thing and break something else in the process.  For example, I lengthen my stroke, but over rotate my body in the process.  So, I’m call in professional help.  Second, I’m close to buying my new bike.  I haven’t decided which one yet, but I’ve found an excellent bike shop where they really know their stuff.  It’s called High Gear in Short Hills – everyone one done business with them? Anyway, I’m still adjusting to the sticker shock of a new bike.  My first inclination I was in new territory was when the salesman use the term MSRP!

BTW/ can someone tell me a quick way to get to this forum?  After I log on I click on forums, then beginner forums, then I scroll down looking for this group (missing it the first time most times).

Thanks everyone.

Great idea with the swim coach; I have literally gone from coach to 2k  yards in 4 weeks.  I am a big fan of the total immersion coach's.  Steve uses a gal in scotch plains and I have a guy in hoboken.

The way I get to this forum is by using this link.  I have also set the notifications that each time there is a response I get an email and in the email it has the response and the link to the forum. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=237409

Regarding bike shopping; sticker shock is clearly something that I had to deal with as well.  I have never dealt with that shop before but it is at least worth the trip to Halter's in South Brunswick for a second opinion.  Yes, it might be a drive but it is well worth it for the customer service and experience.  I am sure that I am preaching the choir but bike shopping start with the fit; and then you look at models that meet your needs.  Talk to Jason, I believe that Steve and Grant have also worked with Halter's they are top notch in NJ.  The next two would be Cadence in philly and knapps in princeton.  At least those are the ones that I hear people saying good things about over and over.  Good luck!  I am a bike geek so ask away at the questions!

Well, I have been spending a lot of time upgrading the engine over the winter.  I really wish that my times would be cut in half.  I reality the bike climbs better than my superx and it will accelerate and descend better as well.  But everything else is about the engine.  A few nights back on the computrainer on a standing start 1.1 mile TT I did record my fastest flat speed ever at 27 mph.  But this is likely due to the fact that the SuperSix has a bigger gear in the fron 53 vs 46 on the superX.  And yes, after the TT was completed I was breathing out my ears so there was no way I could sustain that speed for much longer!

Subject: Mini-Break Through In the Pool!
So my first pool workout was on 2/1 and I was swimming (or floating with the current) at 5:29 per 100 yards.  By the end of that week I was still swimming in 50 yard increments and the time had dropped to 4:39/100.  Week number 2 I started swimming 1K yard sets with a time of 3:31/100.  Week three I did my first 2k yard continuous set with a time of 2:49/100.  So that brings us to present; I just came back from the pool and did 2k at 2:49/100.  The last 100 yards or so was rough for sure.

I now feel that I am almost moving faster than the debris floating in the current at the pool.  The really interesting thing is that my splits are nearly identical with and without the pull buoy; as today I did 1k with and 1k without.  That was interesting to me!

This is a testament that if I can swim (think beached whale) anyone can swim!

Ditto everything Northern Ivy said re: Coach & bike shopping.  I got filmed by my TI trainer and was shocked at what I looked like. After just 4 classes I am definitely more streamlined and faster in the water. I can't wait for the "after" filming to see the actual improvement.  I'll share the before the after when I'm done in a few weeks.

Enjoy the bike shopping, its fun (but stressful). Way TOO MANY choices out there. I really rushed into my purchase motivated by a great deal that Jason gave me.   I am very motivated to sell my Tri bike before I go and ask Jason for a refund or exchange.  Check it out on the eBay link below and let me know if you're interested.  Its an awesome bike, just a bit small on me.
