Great job! You're a gentleman Joe! This might be my only 15 seconds of fame given the way you and Jax are hitting the training. Great totals you guys, really impressive. I know when I'm out there pounding the pavement I am motivated knowing that my stats are published every week. I think this is a great idea Sarah. All I need to do is double my training load and I might catch Joe/Jaxx...? ( in my dreams...) |

Veteran 280 Syracuse, NY | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open ransick - 2013-02-20 7:21 PM I have taken a couple extra days off this week as well due to some general lower back pain, and some mild pain in actually both knees. I think the knees was caused by skiing as I could feel them getting pushed while fiighting to stay upright, and my back was likely caused by soccer. I am a goalie and tweaked it hitting the ground. Just a short run on Monday, and a ride coming up in themorning. Take Friday off and do my "long" run and ride on weekend.Sarah73 - 2013-02-20 8:07 AM Lower back pain has meant no running for almost two weeks for me :-(February Totals: Swim Bike Run Total Time Joe 11900 87.94 39.00 16:02:58 Almost all bolded!! Veteran 280 Syracuse, NY | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open cadnams - 2013-02-20 4:01 PM I completely agree. I love seeing the totals for our group. For one it is reassuring that I am not all that far behind volume wise, and it is fun to look at the higher volumes and shake my head.It also highlights my complete lack of motivation to get into a pool right now.jmholzman - 2013-02-21 4:12 AM You're a gentleman Joe! Veteran 211 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Closed Joe, I laughed at this one, just great. Glad the competition is driving you to bleed! Keep the stories coming. If the competition isn't compelling enough, the entertainment will be! Whilst I am not quite in your league I did manage 9.5miles at 9:30 pace. First long run in my HM quest. How's that, even converted it into your speak (for me it was 15km at 5:38 pace). t's been hot here and I've been training in almost 90 degree heat for the last week or more, so I took the one cool day we've had to do a decent distance. Nice job on the long run! That's a good pace! Keep up the good work. |

I entered my swim from this morning AFTER Sarah did this!!! So, according to that, I'm actually back in the lead. Take that Joe! I'm also planning a 1-1.5 hour bike ride this afternoon. I'm afraid I have to concede the week to you, Joe. CH has me on a bit of a recovery week. so your numbers will blow mine away. Hopefully I can still motivate you from behind! Jax |

Veteran 211 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Closed OK...so finally taking a minute to report about my swim lesson on Monday. First off...wish I had done it months ago! It's really going to help me. Secondly...crap it's hard! My instructor is Mary and she was great. She had good things to say about my stroke and actually seemed impressed that I taught myself how to swim. She could have absolutely been lying, but if her goal was to give me confidence, the lie worked! Anyway, the main thing she wants to work with me on first is to correct my breathing. I can only breathe on the left side. When I try to breathe on the right...well, it's unnatural and I choke and just can't do it. She said that's fine, I can manage to breathe to one side. BUT, I've been breathing every other stroke. Her goal is to get that to every 4 or 6 strokes. During the lesson, I did ok. But, here's the problem. In order to keep my panic at bay, I get myself into this rhythm. Steady. Slow. Chill. Don't panic. The breathing is key to that. Which is what makes me swim at a snail's pace. So, when I do the breathe every 4 or 6, it speeds me up, lengthens the time between breathes and totally blows my rhythm. So, then I am super winded and heart rate is high after 50 yards and I have to stop. So, I have to completely retrain myself and find a new rhythm. I praciced on my own for 1100 yards on Wednesday and it was really tough. Near the end I gave myself permission to go back to every other stroke and suddenly that feels wrong too. So now I feel like I'm starting over. But, the good news is that I know I'll work through it and will find a new rhythm. It's just frustrating that I feel like I'm starting over. She told me my problem is 100% a confidence issue. So another thing she did was have me swim with flippers on for about 300 yards. Man I felt like I was flying! It was so fun that I didn't even think about my breathing. I just flew back and forth, fast as I could and made the 25yard length of the pool in 3 breaths. I kept saying I didn't even feel like me! Anyway...progress is being made, I think! A few steps back...a few more forward! I've got 7 more lessons over the next 7 weeks. Will be interesting to read this post after that and see how I feel about things then. I'd like to fast forward! (Sorry for the loooonnnng post!) Jax |

Anything different is tough, particularly in a sport that is all about repetition. But 7 weeks is not very long and just think how different it will be, and BETTER! New user 129 Melbourne, Australia | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Closed Hey all. Well, after much research and a slice of luck I have been given an entry into the Noosa Oly in November. This was always the A-race I was aiming for but the entries sell out within hours, and I didn't have one. Apparently it is the most popular tri in the southern hemisphere (who knew???). Anyway, the event has a couple of charity partners who are given a handful of entries, and I have been offered one. It means I now have a bunch of fundraising to do, but that's all good. It is a terrific charity and I have a great friend who has been involved with them for 15 years. It will be my first Oly, and a ripping place to do it. Noosa is beautiful. And it is five months before the only local HIM. I am not sure yet if I will go after that one, but this will set me up pretty well. Now I have my motivation for the year locked away, and I'm pretty excited about it! Have a great weekends training everyone. Chrispy |

Veteran 493 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Closed Jax, that's great to hear. Even little tweaks can make a huge difference in the swim; I look forward to hearing about your progress.
Chrispy, that is also great to hear, sounds like you've got a great experience to look forward to.
I didn't end up getting to go for that bike ride on Wednesday, and I tried to fit it in today but after my hill run workout work and family life interrupted tri life, so I couldn't fit it in today either. So I'm going to ditch work early tomorrow afternoon and try to go for a 30-40 miler. I've been wanting to push the distance for awhile, the furthest I've been doing is 20 miles, but I've not had the time to devote to a single ride. So this will give me an opportunity to test myself on a longer ride and to work with my nutrition and hydration plan. That plus masters in the morning will make for a good day. |

Veteran 211 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Closed Well it seems that Joe is far ahead after all. Turns out one of my bike workouts last week was entered twice on the calendar. Sometimes when I update from my iPad, things enter multiple times. I was loving being in front, but it didn't make sense to me, honestly! So, I've corrected it and we'll get a real count next week when we close out the month! Happy training everyone! Jax |
