Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread

BunnyB - 2007-10-10 11:39 AM Hey Bump gang! I have a running question for you guys. Today is another run day for me. Per my conservative C25K, my cumulative running time "bumps" from 2 minutes to 4 minutes today. I still need to figure out how I want to break that up into my total time. I haven't decided if I want to just increase my four 30 second intervals to four 1 minute intervals or whether I want to keep doing 30 second intervals but do them more frequently. Is one way better than the other? Your thoughts? Thanks!

My recommendation is:

Walk 4-5 minutes.

Then do 8 x (30 sec run, 2.5 min walk).

That will put you at 28-29 minutes.  Then walk the last minute or 2 (or if you want to walk a little longer...    ).

And, do it all with a HUGE smile!

Gail, you're awesome. Will you be my hero, too?

Actually, I might do that set myself ... I'm still really struggling with feeling ill. Was very, very, very hard to get on the bike to go to work this morning, and in any case, I slept in.

Have to be in and out of the water all afternoon ... good thing I have a surf wetsuit ... part of my doggie deal is that I do swim therapy with dogs ... basically, it's PT for dogs on vet referrals ... rehab, old, arthritic, and some just for sports.

Still, brrrr!

Um, I don't know if it is, but this SOUNDS super-fun Swimming dogs are SO cute. I am SO jealous of you - cold water or not, it sure as heck beats sitting behind a desk all day!

Gail, you're awesome. Will you be my hero, too?

Of course!   But credit where it's due -- I have learned almost everything I know about triathlon (which is still not very much) from Mr. USAT Dev Coach of the Year.  The rest I just make up, so you have to be careful when listening to my advice to figure out which is which!

For you, I'd recommend skipping any running till you feel a-okay.

Thanks for the input, Yanti & Gail! I'll go with the 30-sec intervals more frequently. I have a couple of running friends who also suggested the same, too.

Ironic you would mention Jeff Galloway, Yanti. I'm reading his "Running: Getting Started" book right now. I've been alternating between it and "Slow Fat Triathlete". Both have been GREAT reads!

I'll say it ... I live a dog's life.

Believe me, I am aware every moment how blessed I am. I do also have a desk job, but it's on contract ... at a fitness/health company, with a fully equipped gym/studio, that employs some of the best amateur cyclists in the world, where I can bring dogs, and I determine my own hours.

The rest of the time, I go to the dogs.

It's good, it really is.

I loooove Slow Fat Triathlete! One of the Vampires (okay, who is also my training buddy) turned me on to that, and she and Jayne are friends! Cool, huh?

I have also met Jeff Galloway--he took time to speak with me personally for about a half-hour. I was in awe. Then again, he also called me an "eater with a running habit." Ouch ... but true.

Is this the wrong time to get into, "Well, when I was your age ..." HA! HA! HA!

Actually, when I was your age I was a starving grad student. Financially, it's actually worse now, but that's just because there were a LOT of startup costs for my business and I'm paying that, and a bunch of other stuff (living expenses DURING grad school) off. The cash flow is actually quite good ... just a lot of outflow right now.

On the bright side, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, knows how to be a triathlete for cheaper. Then again, I also have inordinately good luck. I wound up getting my first longsleeved tri wetsuit (new) for free, and my first tri suit (also new) for $38.

I'm babbling! Must be off!

Oh wow, that's VERY cool! I love Jayne's book, too. I only have 1 chapter and the resources section to go. I'm almost sad I'm at the end. LOL

I've not had the pleasure of meeting Jeff, but I did get to meet John "The Penguin" Bingham last year when I did the 5k at the Columbus Distance Classic. I picked up a copy of his "No Need for Speed" book and got to chat with him for a few minutes. I was still just walking at the time but definitely had running aspirations. He was very encouraging which meant a lot to me.

I know - it's a beautiful day (though still a bit hot, I think) and I'd MUCH rather be outside than sitting here. Sadly, I don't know much outside running I'll be able to get in during the winter, unless I can coerce friends to run with me during the week - not safe to run in the dark by myself. I think Saturdays will be reserved for long bike rides, and Sundays for bricks.

I was just trying to plan this coming week and looking ahead, since it's my first "real" training week - wow, it's a good thing I'm single cuz I am going to have NO life if I want to get good at these things! Not that I didn't train hard for Luray and Giant Acorn, but if I want to get really good, I'm gonna have to up the ante. And stop eating yummy food I love food...I will miss food...

I love food too. You won't miss it. You'll miss junk. Food, you'll do good at. I was looking in my pantry this past weekend and couldn't believe how messed up it is. We rarely eat out of it anymore. Now my fridge, it's packed, which is so unusual for us. My freezer now has all these little packages of chicken breasts, boneless lean pork loins, salmon, individual french baggettes. Very different from what we used to eat. And you know we don't miss the junk. If we HAVE to have "junk" we got with Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches or Vitamuffins. Takes care of that chocolate craving.

About that Life thing? I'm fortunate to be married to a triathlete, so we have no life, even together! LOL We go out to eat one night a week just to sit across from each other and really talk.

Here I disagree, very very strongly.  You need good food, and ENOUGH food, to train well.   Frankly, if you are training well, you should be able to eat pretty much whatever you want, within reason of course in terms of portion size and nutritional balance.

Yep, I'm hating being stuck in the office today, too. It's a gorgeous 70-ish F degrees here right now. If it weren't the fact that I'm going to be out of the office most of next week in a certification class, I would definitely take a couple of vacation hours today and get out of here!

No, I know I need to eat. And I don't eat junk. But I like cheese and fruit and the VERY occasional beer or cookie. To lose the last bit of body fat that I want to lose, I'll have to cut out everything delicious, even if it IS otherwise healthy

If only I could find a triathlete to marry! Though I think I will have to get awesome at triathlons first to garner their respect. All the athletic guys I know don't want to date girls unless they're as fast as they are...sigh

Well, I didn't marry a triathlete. He was a guy that liked to run. He joined the Marine Corps after we were married. He's never stopped running during all this time. His attitude has always been that if he ever ran out of bullets he could run faster and farther than the enemy He's only been doing triathlons for a couple of years. I loved going to his races but used to feel like a 5th wheel so I didn't go to many. I changed my attitude this past year, only now I no longer want to stand on the sidelines.

Oh, man! I LOVE John's column! I think it's so cool you got to meet him. I actually had "WALK DON'T WADDLE" written on the back of one of my marathon singlets -- but may have jinxed myself 'cause I wound up walking most of that marathon!!! Lucky, though ... a lot of my pace group didn't even finish, wound up in the med tent.

The Chicago debacle reminded me a bit of it, except that it wasn't from heat, and it really wasn't a war zone. There was an early course closure--6 hour limit but started closing the course under a 13:00/mi pace. We knew about the cobblestones, concrete, and uneven surfaces, but really weren't prepared for them--lots of legs locking up and terrible muscle cramps. Me too, but I just storked onwards.

Oh, and the course was unmarked, with an illegible map that was useless since the course had been changed the night before, was in a foreign city where a lot of the streets aren't marked ... so I ran a marathon with zero course support, zero course ... and you know what? It was a blast. The Florentines (we were in Italy) came out and gave me bottles of water and bananas and were so awesome in telling me where they had seen runners go by. I had no idea where I was or how far I'd gone, but I knew where the finish line was and figured I'd get there one way or the other.

5K (5.195 K to be exact) from the finish a runner I knew found me and told me exactly how to get to the finish. I had no idea I was so close, and just took off. I started seeing finished runners everywhere and they kept pointing me the right way, and I actually got to a point where course chutes were still up.

I blew through the end of the course in 26:56. I'm not sure I will ever beat that 5K record. I don't know what got into me (well, about 23 miles of "rest," frankly ... a very good warmup. )

Okay, is there a POINT here, anytime soon? If you run or tri long enough, you will hit a nightmare race. Happens to everyone. The thing is, it can still be a great experience. I was so deeply touched by the kindness of strangers and the warmth and beauty of a strange city.

Time to read more of this thread and respond with even more self-serving blather disguised as inspiration!

Clearly you've overlooked half of the BT contingent--the male half--who are just dying to date you, except they're all already hitched or hooked up

I keep tellin' ya, ya gotta move out to Southern California. We could use some good writers here. We got hot athletic dudes on every street corner, at least where I live, and I'm not lying about that. They're growing on trees--they're low-hanging fruit--and very available, and also willing to, ah, "coach" athletes slower than they are.
