Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! SHAUN - Gatorade and other electrolyte formulations should help with things such as your calf cramps during the swim. That and maybe trying to be less tense with your kick. Easy for me to say, as I have a crappy kick and shouldn't go around giving anyone suggestions about THAT.......but I have noticed at times in which I am really working the kick, my calves can cramp. I've never figured out exactly where the cramp is originating. My hunch is that it is when I am trying too hard to have to have my feet in their best plantar flexion position (which is hard for me because I have tight ankles), and that begins a short chain that results in calf cramping. As for the electrolytes before and during a swim, I think I told you last week that I used to have a bottle of something or other on the deck, but haven't for a couple of years now. I guess I should start, if for no other reason than it is probably a good thing to do. BUT!!!! You had another superb swim -- "yowzers fast!" is right!! I can only dream of 200s in 3:15, 3:22, and 3:18, and I'm not sure I've ever had one in that range, let alone three straight. Sweet Jumpin' Judas! Great times on the 50s, also.....and the 200 cool-down + calf massage......and the two 200s "at a slow pace" ------ which, for the record, is about my time for an anaerobic, red-line, I'm gonna-die-or-puke-or-maybe-both-at-the-same-time effort. |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! SHAUN again - I'm not sure that electrolytes will help with the side stitch. That has something to do with the diaphragm seizing, or cramping......but if it's a cramp, and if the diaphragm is a muscle, then maybe it would respong to electrolytes? I think now, but maybe. Anyhow, the hard-press seems to be helping you,, and remember to try the forceful expulsion of air everytime the foot on the same side as the stitch hits the ground. And if either of those don't work at some point, twomother techniques can help -- dramatically reducing your pace until it goes away, and even stopping and taking a few seconds to soften your breathing. On to the Bruins game!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 624 Spring TX | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! First tri of the season, over and done with! Thanks for all the well wishes, and STEVE B for the splash down!! Unofficial time of 1:52:58 (which I think will be pretty accurate). Temp 79 degrees at start of race. Had problems controlling my breathing on the swim (water temp 76 degrees) ... can't wait to practice some OWS in Arkansas next month; bike felt great; and run was OK; transitions were OK. Temp 85 degrees on the way home. Really nice race and definitely plan on keeping it on as one of my regulars. Hope DENISE and DWAYNE have/had great races! And can't wait for the next update on STEVE A ... I tried to figure out how to track him last night but couldn't figure it out, so keep the updates coming. Thought of all you during my race ... DENISE's nice pool swim while I was in the lake hyperventilating, STEVE A's red hills bike ride as I was biking in the woods, and DWAYNE's firey run (wasn't there something about fire in the Warrior Race) while I was sweating the run! Keep up the good work everyone!! Now off to do some chores at my mother's house. Lisa |

Extreme Veteran 624 Spring TX | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! manfarr1974 - 2010-05-01 9:21 AM I am so excited for everyone racing this weekend! I found this cool video of the IMSG race course, thought I would share some of the climbing our Steve A will be doing. Beautiful and rugged. Here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx71IrdMpFU&feature=player_embedded I'm in awe and want to move to St. George. MANDY, thanks for sharing that great preview! Lisa |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! LISA - Well done, and within the crucible of heat --- which you've lived with all your life, but which sucks the soul right out of me. 79 at the start of a tri.....I don't think I've had that before. But you sound pleased with how it went, and your bike anaysis is most positive indeed. One down, and how many to go this season? Reading about Woodlands last night, it sounds like a first-class race; you're lucky it's right in your neighborhood. I can see why you just might want to do it again! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! Did my 30-mile ride earlier.........and just watched the BRUINS WIN!!!! in overtime.........and can see that Steve has made it through the second bike checkpoint, at 66 miles........and I guess it's time to go out and do a run. Maybe when I return Denise and Dwayne will have chimed in about their races, and I expect that Steve will have finished the bike and be on the way to the 26.2 miles of the run. And I'm hoping for a scintillating warbler report from Anne, too. So much excitement today! |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! ANNE - Bird list! Bird list! I want a bird list! Given how much the trees have leafed out up here, I suspect you heard more today than you actually saw. Yes? And I'm hoping that the weather that moved through today might've held some things up there for you, and that the woods were alive with song. Yesyes? We did our grassland survey yesterday morning, and there wasn't much. No a single Loggerhead Shrike, which is the target species, but there were lots of Field Sparrows -- which aren't otherwise common up here. One Yellow-rumped Warbler, which pales in comparison to the likely 4,362 you'll see/hear at Pelee today. Hmm. I can see I'm procrastinating about that run. Well, I'd better get to it.............yes? |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! DWAYNE! DENISE! I'm in hit-and-run mode now -- in from a run and soon out with Lynn (wasn't expecting the latter!). Congrats to both of you for having great days -- Dwayne, for enjoying it so much, Denise for surviving the wind AND nailing a first! I wanna hear more, more, MORE! I figure Steve is about 5 miles into the run. The race clock is at about 10:14, and my rough calc of his cumul time after T2 is ~9:06. I should be back by 10:30, and I hope he's off the course by then -- with an ache-free hammy or two! |

Master 1675 Kitchener | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! stevebradley - 2010-05-01 8:39 AM Sort of update on DWAYNE.... Waves run every 30 minutes, from 9:30am until 6:00pm, with up to 500 participants per wave. So, there's no telling when he will begin......and when he will rteurn, after the "3.51 hellish miles", during which "clean-shaven chins are highly discouraged". Mercy! OK, I have totally missed the info on what race Dwayne is doing - what the heck IS he doing???? 500 participants per wave? Can someone fill me in. |

Master 1675 Kitchener | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! stevebradley - 2010-05-01 8:16 AM TRACEY - Just to fill in a gap here until Anne returns from Pelee..... I think "specialization" refers to your nutritional protocol leading up to a particular race or two, or maybe even a full competitive season, while "transition" would cover the off-season. I might use it this way: Foundation: January-March Perparation: April-May Specialization: June-October Transition: November-December But Anne, when she gets back from the world of Carolina Wrens and Blackburnian Warblers, can tell us with much more exactitude. TRACEY, and STEVE, Thanks Steve. That is pretty much exactly bang on. My months might not exactly match Steve's or say, yours Tracey - depends on when you want to start your training year. I like to use a yearly cycle but start my Foundation in November and go till end of Feb; Prep is March-May; Specialization is June-August and Transition Sept-Oct. If you use a 12 week training program then all those phases would be much shorter. The terms Foundation (or base training) and Transition (off season training-10-20% reduction of volume and often includes some or all cross training) is pretty common terminology among most coaches, trainers, books, etc. The term Preparation (used by Carmichael) is referred to by others as Build and some trainers will have 1 to 3 build phases; The term Specialization is referred to as Peak by others, and will include your taper. I think there are even other terms used for the different phases of training, but I latched onto Carmichael's because it made sense to me. Hope that helps. |

Master 1675 Kitchener | Subject: RE: GrooveTime!group - CLOSED!!! smarx - 2010-05-01 11:09 AM STEVEB, I completed the 3x200 in 3:15, 3:22 and 3:18. Yowzers fast!! Then did some 50 sprints at dead on 45 seconds. then as a check I swam a relaxed 200 in my cool down in about 4:00 which also involved me stopping to massage out another calf cramp. So 3:45 or 3:40 for 200m at a slow pace... Next time I swim I intend on having another stopwatch so I can check for accuracy. QUOTE] WOW! That is absolutely fantastic. You must be thrilled to death. That is awesome swimming. I am so envious. That is like more than a minute faster than my 200's. I'd even take your relaxed 200. |

One Yellow-rumped Warbler, which pales in comparison to the likely 4,362 you'll see/hear at Pelee today. Hmm. I can see I'm procrastinating about that run. Well, I'd better get to it.............yes? Just got back from Pt. Pelee. Had a great day of walking and bird watching. It rained cats and dogs on the way down but the rain stopped by 8:30 and the sun shone from 12:00 on. We walked 4.5 hours, albeit slowly but still walking. I adopted a bird today. We stopped at a place called Hillman Marsh just outside Pelee which we have always been curious about, but never wanted to spend the money. We drove in and were just going to check it out and tried the door of one of the buildings and it opened (we thought no one was there) and there were some bird banders there and they had just brought in their first bird of the season for banding; so we watched and got a lesson on identification, etc. (it was a white throated sparrow - really pretty and oh so tiny); I got an official certificate with the band number on it and signed and they will keep me updated on it's life. It is in its 2nd year, so its life expectancy has increased dramatically. 90% of hatchlings don't make it through the first year. If another bander picks it up in the States or where-ever the info will be sent to me. I got feel its back and feathers and then they put it in my hand to let it go. Kind of fun. Saw and identified 21 birds at the park; but nothing really exotic today and only one or two that were new to us but I still get excited no matter how many times I see them - even the little sparrows. You asked so, here goes - White Throated sparrow; White Crowned Sparrow; Hooded Warbler; Eastern Towhee; Rosebreasted Grosbeak; Yellow Warbler; Tennesse Warbler; Least Flycatcher, Northern Mockingbird; Catbird; Baltimore Orioles (a few); Orchard Orioles; Scarlet Tanager (I love them); several Red headed Woodpeckers; Yellow Throated Vireo; Harris' Sparrow; American Finches; White Eyed Vireo; Red Breasted Nuthatch; Blue gray gnatcatcher; Downy Woodpecker. Had a nice picnic and then headed home. We were on the road at 6:15 so it has been a long day. It's really cool right at the Point and seeing the birds come in for their landing after crossing Erie; they are SO tired and the look a mess with their feathers all rumpled up but they are so exhausted they sit there forever, so you get some good picture taking opportunities. Thanks for asking. |
