Bummer....I didn't get selected in the lottery for the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon in June.  That really screws up my season plans....big time....now I have to re-think my race schedule.

So, tell us all how your February accomplishments matched up with your training goals for the month.  I fell horribly short.  2 weeks of travel, plus squeezing in some x-c skiing, decimated my triathlon training.  Although, skate skiing is good for biking muscles.   Unfortunately, I have 2 more weeks of travel in March as well.

Give updates as well as MARCH goals.  Spring is right around the corner....well...at least on the calendar.  High temp here is supposed to be 9 degrees on Friday.

Complete the main portion of my 6-week bike focused block so I'll have a chance in surviving my mid-March San Diego training camp.

EDIT: that means I'll shoot for ...

SWIM - 8-10 hrs, focus on improving technique
BIKE - 20-25 hrs *** high priority
RUN - 10-15 hrs

I'm 1 for 3 so I was pretty far from reaching my Feb goals. I'll blame it on the weather.

Feb actuals:
SWIM - 9:05
BIKE - 14:29
RUN - 7:21

Although I was 5-10hrs light on my cycling volume, all sessions were quality time spent on the bike. My bike fitness has definitely come along, so I'm pleased with what I've accomplished in Feb.

MARCH GOAL:
SWIM 6-8 hrs
BIKE 25-30 hrs
RUN 8-12 hrs

I'll insert a 7-10 day high volume cycling block mid-march, so this month's volume will be skewed towards the bike.

Good article on swimming faster on Peter Reid's website. It doesn't provide specific workouts but I thought it was a good general article.

The statement "Be prepared to go to the dark place" really hit me.  I don't do that enough.

Good article- almost makes me want to go to the pool   I liked this quote.......

Anyone who knocks long enough at the door to their desires will in some way find success.

I dont know what my March goals are??  Anyone want to give me some?

I did not meet my bike/run goals. Alot had to do with weather, family deaths & sickness (flu). But, I feel like I'm really making HUGE gains in the pool-which is my weakness. My fitness level is great-just need some good biking weather to get mileage in. Getting a swim coach is the best thing I could ever done.

I did register for the open age group sprint in Tuscaloosa (College Nat. Championship weekend). This will be the weekend before St. Anthony's. That should be a great dress rehearsal!!!!!

I'm gonna get in another (last?) long ski in today while the snow is still perfect.  What's everyone else up to this weekend?

I attempted a long ride today. 35 degrees with light snow sent me back home after 30 miles. Will Spring ever get here????

My swim coach asked me to write a testimonial about his coaching program.  He just posted it on his website today.

Been on travel for the last week, but I am home now. Been terribly lazy while I was on travel. My Feb goals were:

Run - 100 miles
Swim - average 3 times a week
Bike - get out a couple of times (weather dependent)

I managed to
Run - 117 miles
Swim - 2.5 times a week
Bike - 1 (the weather tended to be crummy every weekend).

My goals for March are to again run at least 100 miles, get in the pool 2 times a week, and get in some bike rides. Planning to run a trail marathon in Colorado next weekend. Would like to run it in under 4 hours.

Hope you are all doing well!

Good question. Typically the area around Salida does not get a lot of snow and most of it melts out at the lower elevations where the race will be held. But the race officials said a couple of weeks ago that there may still be snow. I think that the conditions will be influenced by the weather this week, which right now is calling for a chance of nighttime snow showers and daytime rain showers all week and into the weekend. So I am expecting that it will probably be pretty muddy. Not exactly ideal conditions to run a fast race, but it will be fun

OK, this is probably no big deal to most of you-but, I swam 1500m non-stop today. Took a 2 minute break and swim another 400m with pull bouy. I am very proud. I could'nt swim 200m when I started in August. Swim coach=best $$$$$ you can spend when starting out !!!!

So Birkie....... I was reading your IM race report from 2006 anad want to ask/discuss some things    Ok your HR was really low Ithink my HR is 120 when Im walking - is that normal for you?  Do you have HR data from 07?  Was it always that low?
AND..... why do you think you didnt hit your goals in 06?  the cold/sinus problems?  weather?  first time in IM?  Ok Im sure its probaly/ maybe a combination but just trying to figure somethings out.

As for IM 07- why do you think your nurtrition plan failed?  And what aspects of your training are you doing different this time around... besides the swim coach (BTW- Id kill for a 1:19 swim split

Ok thats all- for now anyway.

Tommorrow I get fitted for my bike (finally)

Awesome job. I felt that the swim lessons that I took were well worth the money.

Got on a bike ride after work today. Day light saving time is great

It will take me a while to answer this and I'll have to wait until I get back home to make a graph of my '07 race HR.  Get back to you on Fri or Sat.   Temps here in TN are supposed to be in the 70s today.  Even a skier like me is ready for spring now.

Check out my splits and HR from my half-marathon race report from last year...gives you an idea what my HR is like at 6:00 min/mile pace.  I have my splits and HR from my last Grandmas Marathon at home - I can post those on Fri or Sat.  My HR is pretty low when I'm on an easy training run at 8:00+ min/mile pace.

This was just posted on the race website today:

Route update: The races will go on, despite the snowy winter. Race directors plan to use our normal course. The road to Turret is plowed. Half marathon is dry as of Today Thursday. Marathon is dry to mile 8. Mile 8-16+ will have some mud and slick sections on it. Much of the route is covered with snow, some of it 12” deep, between miles 17.5 and 23 on the marathon course.

Should be a fun race, but don't think that conditions will be too good to run extremely fast.

Have a good weekend everyone!

SoI didnt have a very good bike fit yesterday- copied this from my blog

So after spending 3 hours at Transition cycle last night it was determined that I am the less then 1% of the population that will not fit on a tri bike   I am not able to sit correctly without pain and tightness. Here I have been searching for the right saddle and there just isnt one that will work.  So I pretty much have 3 options...1- I can keep my bike and my bars and ride in aero and not b e comfortable and expend extra energy in try to not put pressure in certain spots.  2- I can keep my tri bike and get rid of the aerobars and set it up with rode bike bars... it is a pretty nice bike and can be set up this way- will cost $800- $1000.  3- I can sell my tri bike and get a rode bike.  I am really NOT happy- not happy at all.  I think if I wasnt doing IM I would just suffer.  Why does this crap happen to me?  How can I be that less then 1% of the population TWICE (Ive already been blessed (or cursed depending on the day) with triplets)???  I need to start buying lottery tickets........

Hi all! I've been out away from my computer all this week. I never really set any specific goals for March However, I've been upping my mileage/yardage on the bike and swim. Went for a SLOW 40-mile ride last Sunday. Swam 1000 yards continuous this morning, which is the farthest I've swam this year. So I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. I need to do more running. I have a 10K on April 5, my first sprint tri on April 20, and the Gulf Coast Half on May 10. Then in November, IMFL! Goal for next week: Get back on the proper nutrition wagon (notice I didn't say 'diet')
