It went really well. But I'm hurting right now.  Nutrition and hydration were good to go.  Yeah I think I'm only going to swim this week. And one short run.  NO BIKE!

I just noticed Brads log...2nd overall in his first tri!  geez I'm hanging out w/ a tough crowd.

Your hanging with a tough crowd? How 'bout that 50 miler? nice ride!! I've had a hair over 30 so far. Since were talking longest workouts, I did a 11 mile run today. Felt great for about 9 miles. Good thing Bill gave me all that great info about hydration. I bet it would have worked great. I had no water so I think that hurt me a little. My left knee and left foot are pretty sore. Icing them seems to help. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's soreness.

Had a busy weekend so not much training other than today's run. Back into the swing of things this week.

Less than a month and I'll be in my first outdoor multi-sport event. I'm flying to Phoenix for a wedding. Skipping the rehersal dinner for a swim / run aquathon. 750 yard swim , 4k run. I'm planning on using a wetsuit. more for the experience of taking it off than anything.

Looking forward to hearing how you did Jean-Marie!

Dude, I just read your race report for your 10k. That is the funniest thing I've read in long time.  Beep, Beep, Beep.......

From John's race report - "mainly flat. good to go. the 5k timing mat was on memorial next to some apartments. some guy in the apartments was pissed off and letting all of us know it becasue of the noise the mat was making. BEEP...BEEP..BEEP.....BEEP...BEEP. he was yelling at the top of his lungs from his balcony...shut that f'ing thing off! best on course entertainment i've seen in a while."

What happened to our fearless leader? haven't heard from him in a while.

PLEASE Bill...now worries!   it was awesome but i don't know when i've been this tired.  we walked in the door an hour ago so i'll get the report in tomorrow. but here is a preview.

it was so freaking cool!

i need help w/ the start.  22 minutes for the .6 mile swim but would have been faster if not for the first 200...i seriously thought my day might be done at the first turn.

i need a tri bike if i'm going to keep at this distance or beyond.  i have a 5 year old eddie mercx roadie..no aero bars. also i think its too big but it worked today!

i haven't run 10 minutes miles in long time...i did today. oh well...i didnt walk on step!

i think my nutrition was close to spot on.  (i only drank 2 beers last night...not sure when the last time that happened was Wink)

3:15 so Brad gets to pick his own...  but inside my 3:30 goal.

did i mention i'm tired...

AWESOME JOB, you did great my friend!

Can't wait to hear the details, I'm sure you learned a ton.  Those swim starts are "interesting" aren't they?

Listen to your body in terms of starting up the training again.  I would suggest, though, that you at least get out for a walk or two every day starting tomorrow to help flush out the waste that accumulates as a result of this type of effort.  A REALLY EASY spin on the trainer (I'm talking 20 or so minutes in the small chain ring) will also help speed up your recovery.

The courses may be tougher, but you now know what to expect and how things work and that will make them all that much easier from here on out.

Rest well triathlete!

Hey gang, thanks for the positive energy today, I definitely needed it!!  Still waiting on the times to be posted so I can complete my official race report, but here's a summary:

A bit cooler than I would've liked this morning (35 at the start), but at least it wasn't raining/snowing!!  Got to the race about an hour early and scored a primo parking spot, or so I thought.  What I didn't realize is that the starting line was down a fairly steep hill, more on that later.....Milled around for a bit, took care of "business", and then got my gear sorted.  Went for an easy 5-ish minute jog just to loosen up and try to warm up the core.

Started promptly at 7am and the first 18 miles were great.  Glad I had the garmin on, I had to keep slowing myself down, a common issue with us rookie marathoners, and I did end up paying for this later.  For the first 18.8 miles, I ran at a 7:30 average pace.  My aggressive goal was a 3:20:59 finish which is a Boston qualifier for us old guys, or a 7:40-ish pace.......

Fatigue set in pretty hard just before Mile 19 and I let my form and breathing get sloppy.....As a result, I got the first side stitch I've experienced in over 3 years......By the time I pulled myself out of this mess, the air had started to come out of my tires.....Miles 20 thru 24 were (from memory) 8:00, 8:18, 8:47, and 9:00.  The last 2.2 miles were purely mental.  My legs were smoked and my feet just plain hurt.  Just under a 10 minute pace for those....Finished at 3:32-ish according to my watch.  Waddled my way over to the post-race snacks for some quick carbs.  Remember that hill I told you about?  It felt like farging Mt. Everest trying to get back to my car!!

This race was somewhat of a crapshoot for me with the shoulder surgery and not running at all from early December thru mid/late February.  YMMV, but some important lessons I learned today:

1) I didn't do enough long runs in preparation for this race.  I ramped up really quickly and basically went 13, 15, 17, and 20.  I do much better with at least a couple of 20 milers during training.

2) I went out too fast for where I was at training wise and paid for it late in the race (and the rest of the day, I feel pretty punky.....).  Would've been better to hold back even more and then cut loose after mile 12-ish if I was feeling good.

3) DO NOT park uphill from a marathon finish!

Great job to both of you! I'm now officially the only rookie left. In two more weeks I'll have a swim / run race under my belt. We have to wait for the weather to break before we can start playing in Michigan.
All in all it went well though John? Sounds like you had a blast. So, do you think this is just a phase, or are you in it for the long haul?
Well, back to the grind for me. I'll try to get a real avatar soon, but this one should work for now.

Ummm...yeah, that'll do.

WAY TO GO, that is awesome!  Aren't those breakthru workouts incredible?  Just the first of many to come.  I don't think you are going to have any trouble with that HIM......

Something I missed in my original reply, swimming is a great recovery activity.  No load on the joints, cool water is good for the muscles, and you can control the cardio level.
