i just want to get this right......so even though the recipie on the back of the kool aid packet says 2 quart container, you are diluting it down to 2 gallons???  do you have to use lite salt, or can you use regular iodized salt??  thanx for the tips!!!

Lite Salt is a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. So it will give you both sodium and potassium.

"Regular" table salt is just sodium chloride. (It lacks the potassium. But you want the potassium for electrolyte replacement, so Lite is better in this case.)

Edited to add: Both 'regular" and Lite contain iodine.

Lite salt is for people who need reduced sodium diets. (Ie: have issues like high blood pressure.) They substitute in potassium chloride, which tastes salty, but cuts back on the sodium content.

The Kool Aid is just providing sugar and flavor.... So the answer is that it probably just depends on how much sugar and flavor you want.

It's basically just:
Water
Lite Salt (for the potassium and sodium)
Sugar
Flavoring of your choice.

You want it salty, for the electrolytes. But not so salty that it's unpalatable.
And you want the sugar, for the energy source.

My bike – I was VERY nervous about trotting into my first race with a mountain bike but everyone has made me feel better about it.

I am in the same exact boat, so let's not sweat it. We can do this. Even on a mountain bike. :-)

And yuo will NOT be the only ones on mountain bikes....

You will be amazed at some of the things people pull out of the shed!

My entire first season was done using an old, steel, rock-hopper mountain bike (the kind with no suspension, which was probably good) with knobby tires. I wasn't the only one out there on a rig like that.

One story Eric likes to tell people in the same situation: at one of the sprint races I was doing on my mtb, there was a young woman on an old Schwinn with toe cages, wearing cotton shorts, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes, who blew past an old guy decked out in full lycra on a $4000 tri bike like he was standing still.

It's NOT about the bike.

Exactly. I use my sports drink for one thing only: fluids. I put enough sugar in there to make it taste good enough to drink lots of without it coating the inside of my mouth.

I don't use it for calories. I have gels and bars and sandwiches for that.

Its only purpose it to taste good so that I drink lots and lots of it.

When I first started playing with the recipes, I believe it called for a 1 gallon pitcher, maybe even just a 2 quart pitcher. And the same amt of sugar. I found that to be way too sweet, but also way too concentrated flavor-wise. I was getting a sore tongue from drinking 70ml of it in my camelbak on long rides. I started playing with adding more water, and eventually bought the 2 gallon pitcher we have now.  At first I worried a bit that it might be too diluted, but either I've grown used to it, or it worked out perfectly. Plus, I can fill my camelbak, and two water bottles for Eric and still have a little to spare.

And, Cat, we looked into getting maltodextrin, and I'm sure it would be an improvement, but it's relatively expensive. And I can't imagine that I'm using enough sugar to really have any kind of rush/crash situation to worry about.

I did my run. Almost 11 miles. At the 8 mile mark, I was feeling OK (not great, but OK-enough to keep going).

I took it very slowly. And I did the 9 minutes running, 1 minute walking thing. My main concern was that my calve would cramp again.

I also took my Camelbak with it about half full of Orange. I didn't want to fill it up completely because I didn't want to deal with the sloshing and the weight.  As it turns out, I ran out of juice about a mile from home, so that was perfect. And I ate a gel at the turn-around point. I think the fluid and food really helped.

I even had just enough left in my legs that I could really pick up the pace for the last quarter mile and did some strides as I ran up my block. That felt good. And to know that after 10.5 miles, I still have some energy left is a real boost to my mental state.

Now I'm eating a much-deserved burrito.

PS you talk about Little Debbie and Whoopie Pies, but I'd never give up my burritos for any of that.

My trainer who is an avid mountain biker swear my maltodextrin....

Do you know why he likes maltodextrin? Is it just for digestibility? Or does he feel it gives him more/faster energy?

Maltodextrin is derived from starch.... (like what you find in potatoes, rice or corn.)

Starch is a long chain of glucose molecules, linked together with a specific type of bond. We can digest starch easily, because we produce an enzyme that breaks the bonds. When this happens, we get glucose out of it. (Glucose, also known as dextrose, gives us energy, but can can raise blood sugar, cause us to gain weight, etc.)

To make Maltodextrin, they start with starch, and break some of the bonds for you. So the chains are shorter in length. This means we can get glucose out of it pretty easily and quickly. (Which is good for someone needing fuel, but could be bad for someone who has diabetes or blood sugar issues.)

That sounds like a truly fantastic run!!! Way to go

Enjoy your burrito - youve certainly earnt it... the two things I often have as treats after a massive workout is a salt n vinegar chip sandwich on white bread with butter and/or some ice cream... Especially on hot days...

Havent worked out my cold weather treat yet but I never planned the one above so Im sure something will come to me! Sometimes I prefer a chicken, salt and butter sandwich instead of the chips...

Thats pretty much it Dee... it seems to provide energy quicky and its easy to mix up in sufficient amounts to fuel his long races... and he can stomach it over the LONG races too...

He also has a hot body so Im guessing thats less of a worry

Sorry... missed part of your question. Yes, I dilute it. To be clear, I'm using the unsweetened Koolaid packets... not the kind with sugar already in it.

And, yes, the lite salt is better because it has potassium and other salts other than sodium.

Now that it's done and I'm mostly rested, I'm feeling a lot better about it.

Carnitas burritos are my downfall. Don't get me wrong, I love love love ice cream. But after a hard effort, I crave two things: Coca Cola, and carnitas.

It doesn't help that the site were most of our summer races are held is a popular picnic area for Latino families. After the race, the smell of grilled meat is over-powering. I sometimes dream of walking up to a picnicing family and just looking pathetic, to see if they'll take pity on me.

Maybe I was Mexican in a previous life.

See we kind of get mexican here but I suspect its not actually the real stuff..

I do like a good maragarita though - does that count?

I try to keep my random cravings to the BIG workouts... works out well... no damage done, refueled and hit hopefully the worst of the food cravings on the head for the week!

I am a full blown junk-food addict...... I have four basic food groups, but they're not necessarily the ones you'll see on the Food Pyramid: - Sugar - Carbs - Chocolate - Caffeine

Come to Pennsylvania, our food groups are:

Starch
Lard
Sugar
Whoopie Pies

Mmmmmmmmmm....

I had to google Whoopie Pie.... wasnt sure what to expect... was a bit worried it wouldnt be work safe...

But now I know... looks delish!

Graham crackers, marshmallow or whipped cream covered in chocolate, mmmmmm how could you go wrong with those combos!!!

Wait, Wait - that sounds like you're talking about S'Mores, which are also good, but THESE are whoopie pies (also called Gobs):

Woopie Pies

They are an Amish concoction and the Amish aren't exactly known for their dietary self-discipline.

Can you tell I'm hungry?

OK, so away from the whoopie pies and back to training.  I wanted to ask about experiences with ankle sprains.  My ankle had pretty much returned to normal as far as pain goes, but now I'm feeling a sort of creepy "clicking" near the rear when I move it in certain ways.

Can someone clarify for me what's going on down there?  Are my tendons overstretched and I have to wait for them to return to their normal length?  If that's true, I would think my chance of re-injury would be pretty high during this waiting period.  Or are the tendons NOT going to return to normal length and I have to strengthen the supporting muscles to compensate?

Or am I wrong altogether and that's not what is going on?

I looked up ankle sprain several times on the internet and everything indicates that there are two types of sprain - stretched ligaments and  torn ligaments.  The problem is that the doctor didn't tell me which it was that I did.  I have to assume that if I TORE the ligaments, it would have been pretty obvious and I would have been told.  Is that correct?

I found a bunch of good exercises to help strengthen my ankle muscles, but none address these questions.

Thanks, everyone!

Okay, I have always understood that a sprain is the stretching of the ligaments while a strain is the tearing of the ligaments.  If it was a strain, you'd probably notice quite a bit more bruising in the area.  In either case, the therapy for each is the same, R.I.C.E.  It will take some time but, for me, it is usually the swelling that causes the most discomfort.

You also have to be careful and to try to rebuild the strength in the stabilizing muscles around the area.  Typically, a doctor might have you do some simple exercises using a thera-band to strengthen the area.

The clicking can be any number of things so I can't be sure.  Is the clicking painful or is just that your ankle is suddenly clicking for the first time?  Is the clicking near the area where you hurt your ankle?

For a while, you're going to be susceptible to reinjuring the ankle pretty easily.  Take it easy on it and watch where you're stepping.

That's kind of funny since I just made plane reservations to fly into Wilmington.  My folks moved to Cape Carteret a few years ago and it's the most convenient airport that doesn't cost an arm and a leg from New York.

Very cool!  I know you can get really good direct, roundtrip flights from Wilmington to Laguardia.  I'm planning a trip there soon to visit friends in Hoboken (that's where I moved here from) and NYC.  I saw some prices that were like $159 round trip!

Dear Mentor Group,

Thanks to you, I'm out a substantial amount of money. LOL!

I found a "real running shoe store" that's a little over an hour from here (each way). I drove up there, had a nice conversation, and plunked down money for a pair of shoes. They aren't pretty, but hey, if they work, it's money well-spent.

The year I had my best bike splits was the year I did spin class twice a week.  It's a great workout, and helped me build my strength.

Nothing will ever replace riding outside and getting the bike-handling skills or the endurance needed for longer rides, but for your shorter rides it's a great replacement.

I wish I had access to a spin class I could work into my schedule.
