sand101 - 2010-01-18 3:23 PM After two days off I went out for my long run today - oof. Wanted 10-11 miles and quit after eight. Legs were burning after two. Called it after 8 - surprised I held an 8:45 pace (what is typically my long slow distance pace). Legs are a ball of soreness now. I had been a tad bit under the weather this weekend, but never thought it was this bad.

So only 16 miles last week and this week's start is for suck. I need to HTFU and get some running done - the half getting pretty darn close.

My longest run in a while is 1:20(10 mi).  I hope to get in 1-2 runs of  1:30.

I had my DOT physical on Monday, and it through a monkeywrench into my training plans.  I'm good for another two years, so that's good.  Went to the rock gym again for a bit yesterday.

Didn't ride to work tonight.  When I woke up the winds were a steady 34 gusting to over 40.  I decided that with all my gear and passing around city structures that it would not be safe.

Should be just raining in the morning.  I think I bike run in the am.  The rock gym is on my bike route, so I might stop in and work my hands a bit.

Good run this morning.  Tempature was 48 and no wind.  Good weather for running. Today will be my last push on pace before the race.  The 8:45 for eight miles was a personal best.  The rest of this week I will put in an easy 10 and next week I will do 3 short runs.  Looking foward to doing the ING Half in Miami at the end of January.

Good job on the runs folks! I got an hour on the trainer and a half hour on the treadmill this morning. Gonna try and get a swim in this afternoon.
I'm so excited! I talked to my LBS today and they will have a Felt B2 and Cervelo P3 set up for me next week. I'm gonna ride both for about half an hour, then pull the trigger on whichever strikes my fancy!!!Tongue out

Congratulations on getting a bike.  Don't think you will go wrong on any case with the Felt or Cervelo.  I have ridden my felt about 200 miles now and love it. I know you see a lot of Cervelo bikes at the races.  I rode with two guys this past weekend who had Cervelo P3 and love them.

yeah, I've ridden the P3 and it is very nice. I've just been waiting to buy until they could get a B2 in my size in the shop. Wanted to compare the 2.

On another note, I want to ask you folks about the "pound is a pound" theory. I just started training again about 2 and a half weeks ago after 2 months off due to an injury. I had put on a few pounds while I wasn't working out. I'm not killing the workouts with intensity right now, but I'm putting the time in. I feel like my cloths are getting loser and I seem to look thinner. However, I stepped on the scales last night and I've actually gained about 3 lbs. What gives, muscle?

The difference in the density of mucsle to fat it about 3:1. So if you are losing the same volume of fat and replacing it with the same volume of muscle it should weigh about 3 times as much. You could be losing fat and gaining muscle and actually gain weight. A good way to tell is to use a fat monitoring scale like this one.

Good luck training.

I agree with Robert, body fat is a better unit of measurement than body weight.  An example, the day after a hard workout your body will retain fluid or be inflamed.

If a scale is all you've got, then weigh yourself first thing in the morning after a rest day. And try to have you morning BM, every bit helps.

Awesome - that's like getting to go to the Playboy Mansion and having to choose between the blonde or the brunette.

Finally got a good run in today.  I wanted to do a typical Wednesday run -a few miles at moderate pace and then a few miles at tempo pace.  When I got there it was looking mighty gloomy, so I basically said f### it and just took off and did as strong a run as I could to beat the rain (considering I did some decent leg weight work at lunch).  I ended up at:

Mile 1 7:26
Mile 27:29
Mile 37:51
Mile 47:35
Mile 57:41

Not bad.  Mile 3 was hilly (well, kinda).  Overall a decent clip for where I am at.  I am hoping to get healthy, dial in, and get tuned in for my half in February.

BTW, Brian - good luck in your half!  I look forward to hearing the report.

Yes. That is the scale that I use. I didn't need all of the features either. However, it was not much more than the other model I was looking at and I have come to enjoy the other features. I figure the more you know about your body the better choices you can make. I am still working on the food choices, but at least I clearly know my body fat. And it says Ironman in the title! How cool is that?

You might want to check out Fitzgerald's book.  I'm only halfway through it but it's a good book.  There is definitely a slant towards people who are already in very good shape and trying to fine tune things, however there is a lot of good basic nutrition and diet information.  For example, he dispels some myths about various fad diets and introduces a scoring system to evaluate the quality of you your diet.  Instead of saying "eat this but don't touch that" his quality scoring gives you information and an easy way to start making smart choices on your own.

Finished my longest swim set ever today - 3600 yds.  Fought some wicked calf cramps, though.  I think those were somewhat due to the run from last night.  Anyway, I wanted to point out:

Sand101 - 22,100 yds
BamaDC - 21,000 yds

The gauntlet is thrown down!  Actually I will be at a conference next week and won't have a chance to swim much, so I might as well crow now before Mark dusts me next week. Wink

Haha, but I've got to knock out 6500ish yards today and tomorrow.

Overall my season is tied to the Bike and Run.  If I want to place in the top 14 of my AG at Halfmax, my bike and run need big improvements.  I probably dreaming, but go big or go home.

Okay who's has a goal of weight loss?  It's time to get down to buisness.  Post your current weight and goal weight, or current Body fat % and current %.

I'm currently 173.8 and a goal of sub 165.  That should put me in the 7% body fat range.

I need to get a good body fat measurement done.  My scale says I am at 18%, which is a load of BS.

Frankly I like the weight I am at (168).  I still could use to trade some fat cells for muscle cells, though.

Weight loss, I'm in:

Started last may at 273 ish.  Got down to 217 before vacation and the Holidays.  Now, 228 and struggling with boredom eating at work.   I think I've also slacked off training time but still eating like I'm full blasting it.

The plan is to go for a bike ride in an hour or so, but I need a nap.  I've been up for 20 hours now, but my available bike time otherwise conflicts with family time.  What to do?

One hour nap and twenty ish mile ride sound good.  G'night.

284 with 33% body fat.

Short term goal of losing 25 pounds to get to 260 and down to 25% body fat.

Long term goal of losing 120 pounds and detting down to 10% body fat.

Struggling with family in town and lots of eating as well as tons of rain that just stopped that has made it very difficult to run and bike.

Oops.  I was too tired to type my goal.  I think 173 would be cool just because I could then say I lost 100 without bariatric measures.  And I fell asleep until it was on-demand-movie time.  We saw G-force with the kids and then The Hangover after the tykes went to bed.

Currently at 178 and would like to get down to 170.  I have an appt with a nutritionist and a metobolic(sp?) test on Tuesday Feb 1st.  The test measures your caloric needs and body composition.  I will let the group know how it comes out.  I also want to get a menu plan out of it taylored to my needs.  At this point I have no idea what my body fat is but will post when I get the results in a couple of weeks.

Count me in to as a guy who ate more than I had been over the holidays and with company visiting.  I know when I am tired a one hour nap helps me.  I rode 50 miles yesterday and came home and napped in the afternoon got up and did a 7 mile run which felt great. I don't have the issues many of the group have since my girls are already out of the house but I remember the balance you have to have.  Just try and find it and don't feel guilty about what ever you decide.

Sounds like the super secret goal of 160 is a secret to who?  My wife and kids are always on me for looking to thin at times.  If that is what you mean for a "super secret goal" that is just to funny!
