Never done one and was wondering how they fair with regards to training? A local Group is setting some up for early May--they plan on doing 3 days of the races and am considering the challenge. I was actually thinking of doing one this year in April. Its a mountain bike and a trail run. 1st tri of season 2 weeks later. I was thinking it would be a great warm-up Where's that race Serenity? i was looking for some XTerra type events around here (in CT). I came across some in MA that i was thinking of checking out last year. Never made it tho. The race is in Ashland,MA

Sounds like a plan. It appears we may have a small BB group interested in this race.Welcome to the group, Dave. Check into that Hopkington race soon, I think it is Sold out if it is the same one I was looking into. I also in the Burbs. Hey Steve: I just double checked the Max Performance page and what I think you saw was last year's race page. Registration is due to open up later in the month. Thanks for keeping me informed. Once I start running again - we should go for a short slow run. Have a great week! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hey BBMG - I hope everyone's week went well and I thank all those who have sent some positive feedback my way. My week was good. I swam for the first time and also stretched twice. It's a far cry from the 6-7 hours I was putting in last September but I've been trying to convince myself, "small steps" will help me get back there. To the person who send me the "That Guy" article... I loved reading it. I don't want to be "that guy" to other people - I just want to be "that guy" to myself... The race in Ashland sounds fun. I used to bike right by that park on my rides back in the fall. I look forward to doing that again once it warms up. If anyone signs up - let me know, I'd love to do it with you. As for signing up, when the hell will Max Performance update their page so I can sign up the race in Hopkinton... I'm dying here... Also - can I get some help figuring out how "inspires" actually work? Someone explained how do do it but how dod they work? How can multiple people get on the same thread? For example, I replied to an inspire by Serene (thanks Serene) and someone else explained it.... I'm usually pretty good with technology but there is a lot of stuff on BT that I find confusing. Enjoy the workouts this weekend everyone. And for those of you still struggling through this winter - may it warm up for you! |

First, go Buckeyes Second - my family has a place up North and my wife and I go there for a month in July. I'd love to do a race up there. Do you know of any or do you know of a good site (in addition to BT Michigan) where I could go to find some info? Thanks... I apologize for giving you about Michigan... If it makes you feel better - most of the people in my family went there... Have a good weekend! DQ |

Regular 93 Billerica | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Qua17 - 2010-01-06 7:33 PM Hi Group: I just wanted to check in... Like Serenity, I too am still taking it one step at a time. My problem is that I'm so tight (and can get injured so quickly) that I can literally get sore from stretching. But I stretched for 15 minutes today, iced, and my knees and hips only feel a little sore. Any one got any advice on how to cure an ITB injury other than stretching/ice/and going slow? Tomorrow I'm going to make it my mission to hit the pool for the first time in more than two months. I might do 200 yards and aqua jog for the rest of the time. Again - nice and slow so I don't get hurt again... Finally - I'd love some help finding a good bike before my first tri in May. Last year, I did two sprints using my old hybrid road/dirt bike and that was ok because time wasn't as important to me as finishing. But I'd like to beat 1:40 at the Buzzard's Bay Tri in September and would like to find a better bike. Like many of you - I have kids and all my extra money is going into paying for diapers and daycare. I'd like to find something that I could use for a season or two for less than $300. Is that possible and if so, where should I go and what stretegy should I take? Thanks and have a great rest of the week! I am coming off an IT band injury that happened in Nov. I was runnning too much too soon in new shoes. I have been reading a lot on the problems and have been using a IT band strap that goes around your knee to help keep the IT band from snapping over your knee. It has been slow but I have been as you, stretching alot and working on swimming to avoid running as much as possible to let it heal. I have picked up a thick foam roller to massage your muscles and that targets your sore spots very well. This I have been doing before and after every workout and I am slowly getting back to the running. Time will heal but who says you can't help. I attached the link to the IT band strap I picked up at REI.com The foam roller I got at Dicks Sporting goods. Pro-Tec Athletics Iliotibial Band http://www.rei.com/product/704435 |

Use to spend days limping around after a good run-not saying it totally removes the pain but sure makes it feel so much better. |

I did some research today and found some good things about the stick and thanks for the recommendations. But after reading the post from our fearless leader - I think I will stick (so to speak) with my foam roller. I've been struggling with this for a decade, so needless to say, I have one in my garage (not a good place for it ) Question - should I be using the foam roller now (when I am feeling sore) - or should I wait to heal? Also - what exercise should I be doing to continue to keep moving forward that won't exacerbate my soreness. I was thinking of going for a short ride on my trainer today. Any thoughts or alternatives? Thanks a ton for the continuing support! DQ |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Race strategy questions - I have an indoor mini sprint one week from today and have a few questions. 1. The cycling portion is on exercise bikes. It seems to me that increasing the resistance doesn't really give you that much more distance. So it seems like it would make the most sense to put the resistance on the lowest and just crank out a really high rpm. Does anyone have any experience in this department? 2. I am dealing with a strained calf that is not responding well to running. If I stretch it each 1/4 mile I can make it through. My whole calf just gets rock hard and tightens clear up into behind my knee. Should I just run as per planned this week, stretching as needed or back off? Or, do I just suck it up and run through it without stretching?? (my only injury, and it was a coach that made me do it! grrr) It sounds like everybody that has a stick doesn't really use it all that often, |

Sure, it might heal if you don't stretch it, but the injury will linger for longer if you don't take care of it. My advice would be to take it easy this week, which will not only allow you to heal but to do really well in your race. Good luck! DQ |

DQ Alana - i have to agree with DQ - i would lay off the running, at least for a little while if it seems to be making the calf worse and focus on recouping the calf. Maybe walking and stretching. Of course, if it's only your calf that's bothering you there is plenty of other stuff you can do. Swim, Core work, strength work (back - pull-ups, rows, etc). I'd see if you can try riding a excercise bike or spin bike without a lot of resistance. It may help loosen it up (or it might make it worse). You need to get it warmed up some how before you stretch it tho. It's only January - it's not time to push thru the injuries yet (in my opinion). You still have time to let get healed up and go into the season inurjy free |

Regular 71 Melbourne | Subject: The weekend just gone Hi all weekend was a bit of an odd one for me- I piked on the race on Sunday (but thanks to those of you who wished me luck)- just felt I wasn't quite ready yet1 But will have to go in the next one. Did however get out on my new bike and had a great ride- despite the heatwave we have on at the moment. Was a bit sore Sunday in the neck and shoulders after the ride- my brother-in-law (my personal bike expert)- said that was to be expected and not to worry- so I won't, just need to do some stretching- and really seriously considering yoga. Did a transition session with the club- learning how to run with the bike and mount and dismount. Did a bit of swimming in the bay- was beautiful on such a hot day- key thing was looking ahead to avoid the jellyfish- there are alot in the bay at the moment- their sting won't kill you, but it really stings so best to be avoided! Swimming tonight- looking forward to loosening up my shoulders! Have a great week everyone. Cheers Maree |
