BigH2OChief - 2010-04-18 9:04 PM Hey Richard,

When stressed (and exhausted) coming out of T1 I have a tough time with a 'flip & clip' and dont have the time (right now) to invest in learning the 'shoe-in rubber band method'.  I have tried SPEEDPLAY's double entry which will give me a bit of an edge (if not peace of mind) to clip in at the mount and I really like the adjustable float.

You are obviously versed T1, talking about flying mount with rubberbands!  I agree, this requires practise.  Everyone likes different pedals.  Give us a followup in a month on your impression of the speedplays, if you can remember

I use my 305 more for measuring distance, speed parameters and elevation.  I have a Garmin mount on the TT bike and use the wrist mount on the MTN bike.  I used to use a mount on the MTN bike too until I wrecked on a rock garden and wtached it get launched down the trail in front of me.  I am interested in using the HR monitor more apprpriatleyand learning more about using 'Zones' as a training augmentor.

I use my Garmin on combination of wrist & mount as well.

Tim uses HR training, I believe, & he might want gave some additional advice on this.  A few pages back, it detail how to determiet your LT & then your zones.

I'd like a new bike, but am pretty undecided on which way I'd like to go.  Either a straight road bike, a tri bike, or a lightweight hardtail mtb.  Doesn't really matter anyway, cause I have no money avaliable... Sealed

Ahh the triathlon wishlist...we all have 'em!

Meulen - 2010-04-18 9:36 PM I have 2 bikes and one on the way.

For my MTB riding I have a 2007 Trek Fuel 70 full suspension that I majorly upgraded.  I went with XTR brakes, avid TI levers, Manitou R7 fork with MILO(remote lockout), Easton carbon monkeylite bars, Easton EA90 stem, Easton carbon seat post, Nokom cables, SRAM X0 rear deraileur, XT front, SRAM X0 grip shifters, Shimano SLX Hollowtech II crankset, and selle Italia Signo seat.  I saved a lot of money buying the bike used on ebay and a friend getting me parts for the upgrades at dealer cost.  Weighs in at 27 lbs.  I use crank brothers egg beaters style this year.  Last year I used candy style and spd's for a while too.

For the road I have a 2008 Fuji Bordeux Pro Series.  It's an aluminum frame with carbon fork and seat stays.  It has campagnolo Veloce components.  I use spd sl pedals on this bike

For my tri-bike I'll soon have a Cervelo P4 with SRAM Red components. I'll be using spd sl's on this to stay consistant with my road bike

I use a Garmin 705 for GPS and to measure speed, distance, time, cadence, etc.  I did computrainer this winter and got to train with power in watts.  I really thought it was an effective way to train and will probably be adding some sort of power meter on my bikes in the future.

Cool bike stable!!!  I think the Black P4 is the coolest looking TT bike.  Purely on esthetics, it appeals to me.

GoGoGo - 2010-04-18 11:21 AM Anyway, I am getting my new Tri-Bike this week!!!

Might be a good week to have "bike week".   Will try & concentrate on bike questions, etc.

So. I'll get started...

Your Bike...

Do you have one yet?  More than 1?  What brand, type, etc.  I note many of you have posted lots of bike porn already.

Does everyone clipless peddles?  Anyone not taken the plunge yet?

Do you "measure" bike output?  Either with bike computer, GPS, etc?

Enquiring minds want to know?!?!?

Tri Bike: Specialized Transition - Look Keo Carbon Pedals
MTB Bike: Titus Motolite - Look Quartz Carbon-Ti Pedals
Garmin 305 Edge

Hopefully, soon, Zipp 404s with wireless PowerTap hub for my tri bike.

Clipless pedals for sure.  I can't ride platforms at all anymore.  It's funny how accustom you become to using different muscle groups.  With clipless pedals, you can get some much more energy transfer from your legs to the drive train.

Mark, have you tried running, or even walking for that matter, with the Speedplay platforms?  From what I've seen, they are pretty big and cumbersome.  Thoughts or opions?

Me too.  I want a Specialized Stumpjumper Carbon HT!  I would build the bike strictly for racing and sub 20 pounds.  I would probably go with the SRAM XX drive line too.

Brian, how is the Garmin 705?  I'm using the edge 305.  I realize the 705 has a color screen and you can upgrade the base maps.  How well does this work for trail riding?  Is it better suited for the road?

I like it a lot.  I just got it for xmas so I'm still learning to use the maps functions.  There are two pre loaded map data packages you can get for it.  One for roads (which I got) and one called topo for off-road.  I haven't tried the off road topo, but regardless the device still maps your route while your off road.  I think you just don't get turn by turn directions and points of interest.  So I guess I don't really have an answer for you as far as using the maps off-road.  The cool thing is the feature that plots your starting point.  So in a race you set the 705 to record laps every time you pass the starting line.  If you also set to only record over 3-5mph it will pick you up when you start rolling so you don't have to hit the start buttong before while the gun goes off.  Ideally, I think I'd like to get the garmin 310xt as well, and maybe topo for the 705.  That way I could use the 310xt on the road bikes, running and swimming, and the 705 on my MTB's ( I plan a race bike build for next year )  Wish list I guess LOL.  If you're interested shoot me a PM and I can give you my user name and password for my garmin connect and you can see the maps.  I've got the Sylvan island race, some of the palos woods trails and Kettle Moraine in there.  To be honest I don't use the mapping much on the device while I'm out, mostly just the data.  I like to look at the maps after on garmin connect.  As far as power goes the 705 picks up power data through ant+.  Personally, I think I'd rather get a quarq crankset or the new speedplay pedals power meter that's coming out instead of hubs.  That way it will read power with whatever wheels I have on there.

GoGoGo, thanks for the compliment!  I can't wait till that bike comes in.  I should get it next month some time.  I'll be sure to shoot some pics.  Black and red are kinda my colors so the sheme was perfect!

I just got back from a run.  It's been a long day.  I took the wife to get new appliances for the kitchen, cut the lawn, re-mulched my landscaping, and swam this morning.  I'm beat!! going to get some sleep.

I use Garmin connect too.  Well, I started with motionbased that became garmin connect.  If you want to check out my rides, I have the same user name there too.  Definately would like to take a look at your rides so go ahead and send that over whenever.

I really like the ability to download other people's rides.  Last year, I used that feature alot while traveling through the Southwest.

Tim - I have thought through the SPEEDPLAYS quite a bit.  The T1/2 routes in/out are not to bad for my upcoming Spring, Enci and Redondo races and I will should be able to hobble (or skip) in and out on the cleats much faster than trying to clip in at mount/dis-mount.  I also like the adjuatable float and once I perfect a shoe in technique the SPEEDPLAYS just seem like a better fit (for me).

CRAP... It's raining here again!  My Monday morning Brick may not go off.  I may be looking at Masters Swim and a TM run tomorrow instead.  I'm traveling all next week... but the hotel has a nice lap pool and fitness center so I'll be keeping it honest.

Do you attach 305 to bike or your wrist?

Also, interesting you bring up race wheels.  I have given some thought to a set.  Not sure yet.  Was leaning toward HED, as a bit of a cheaper pricepoint.   I live in a windy area, so the wheel selection is always a problem.  Also, the question of rear wheel as a disc or disc cover.  Because I am a Clyde, need Clyde wheels!!  I believe HED calls them "Stallions"Undecided

There is a lot of mountain biking going on with this group!

Richard

Besides knowing you form last group the MTB was the other reason I joined this group.  I love MTB riding.  I still need to get a pic of mine.

My MTB is a 1989 model GT Tequesta.  It is a Chrome Molly fram hard tail.  No shocks just straight forks, I'm pretty sure it is not worth upgrading on this bike???   that money would be better spent on a new carbon or Alumini frame bike with light weight shocks already on it.  But I'm open to sugestions on that.

Road bike is the mid 90 model Pugeot I posted a few pages back.  Most people have dreams of a new Tri bike but I think I'd be happy with my old road bike and areobars and a New Top of the line MTB. But the GT is still a great bike and in good shape.

Just making sure on the pedals.  I wasn't fond of the platforms when I was looking at them.  Looks like you have a plan.  Now, we just need the race.  I was going to try and make it down to the Encinitis Tri, but I either work or have a race that weekend.  I can't remember right now.

No.  The Garmin Edge 305 mounts to the bike.  I use a 90mm stem and it fits perfectly mounted to the stem.

Hey about clipless pedals??  I grew up riding BMX and have never been fond of the idea of being locked into the pedals of my off road bike. I have platforms with toe clips that I keep loose on my MTB and that has even caused me to fall a couple of times when i needed a foot out really quick.  You guys dont find this a problem on a off road bike?

If riding DH (minimal pedaling) stay with platforms.  For XC, clipless are a must in my opinion.  Sure there is a learning curve, but the benefits from clipless pedals are hugh.  Not only are you able to transfer mor power to the pedals, you have better control of the bike and you can use different muscle groups when you start to fatigue.  After riding them for a while, coming out is second nature.  I've actually unclipped before as I was going over the bars!

I'm still working out the kinks.  I sprained an ankle last year cuz I couldn't get out.  The benefits are amazing though, especially on long climbs

Whoops. Got behind here in just one day!

Nutrition: Will do. I have a problem with food.

Bike: I have an entry-level road bike - a Specialized Dolce. I do have Look Keo clipless pedals, though. I will be taking these with me when I upgrade to another bike. Tried the Speedplays and they really made my left leg hurt - people at bike shop thought there was too much float for me.

Just purchased a Garmin Forerunner 305 Saturday. Trying to learn how to use it. Took it on a short run yesterday, and forgot to activate the HR monitor feature. Other than that, I really, really like it.

Food:  Back in November last year I started really changing my eating habits.  I quit drinking all coffee and soda and try to eat as little processed food as possible.

A typical day looks like this:
4am heaping bowl of whole grain Cherios or similar cereal with skim milk.
7am 1 serving organinc oatmeal with added raisins and sunflower seeds.
11am non-anti biotic turkey lunch meat on whole grain bread with slice of swiss cheese.
1pm handfull of raisins
3pm a banana
6pm dinner- this varies, but mostly organic chick/beef and a vegetable serving or a healthy choice meal sometimes.
after workout I eat a power bar and if I feel hungry between I have a bag of raw almonds I snack on.

Race day or big training day my breakfast changes:
4 am bowl of whole grain Cherios
7am 2 servings organic oatmeal with added almonds and Agave Nectar, a banan, and 2 hardboiled eggs(if I'm not traveling far for a race)

If I travel more than an hour for the race I eat the above and ad a whole wheat bagel with natural peanut butter 2 hours before race time and a power bar 45 minutes before race time.  During the race I take a gel every 45 minutes

Hydrostatic body fat calculation was pretty cool.  Imagine a large stainless steel bathtub.  The bottom is supported by cables and functions as the scale.  You lie prone in about 18" of water with a weight on your lower back.  You exhale, then put your head under water, and continue to exhale until you can't blow anymore bubbles.  They repeat the test three times, then use a calculation based on height, weight, and correction for dead space air in the lungs.  The test provides you with your lean muscle mass weight, body fat weight, percentage of body fat, and your resting metabolic rate in calorie expenditure.

My test results showed 7.2% body fat or 10.6 pounds of adipose tissue.  Resting metabolic rate is 1,832 calories.  So, my normal consumption of about 3,500 to 4,000 calories a day was pretty much on target after adding for normal activity and exercise.

$60 out of pocket.  It was fun.  It was arranged through my gym which contracts with a mobile testing company.  My wife wanted to do it and I was curious to get an accurate measurement for myself.  Hydrostatic testing has the smallest error deviation out of all the methods at 1 percent.  Follow up testing is $30.

My wife has lost 20 pounds and it was neat to see that she actually gained lean muscle mass, lost body fat, and decreased her body fat percentage!

I have the forerunner 305 for running also.  I hate running without it.  I really like the auto-lap feature.  I usually have it set at one mile.  This allows me to recall every mile of my run and see time, elevation gain-loss, and average HR for each mile.
