I finished 3rd Overall at the trail half marathon...my first overall podium so pretty happy about that.  The course was on mountain bike trails and extremely hilly and technical with lots of twists, turns, rocks, roots...all the stuff that makes trail running so awesome!   I had a blast.

My legs felt really fresh (taper fresh) in the early miles as I was climbing really well..then came a long climb at miles 10-11 and the residual fatigue caught up to me...the mind wanted to go faster..but the legs were screaming at me to shut it down...luckily the last 1.5 miles were a net downhill where I was able to recover and actually would have caught the second place guy if I had a quarter mile of runway left...missed second by about 5-10 seconds.

My legs are still screaming at me this morning...resting up today .

Nice job on the race.  Trail running is addictive.

Disney Relay marathon for me today.  Honestly I am not sure what they hope to achieve with the relay race.  Only reason I did it was so my friend could get their medal since he has all others (except Tinkerbell but he plans on doing that one too, girl race be damned).  Given that they have the regular half marathon the day before...  Anyways, I did ok I guess.  Not as fast as I wanted to go but as fast as I could go.  I did have a tiny mental lapse and had to talk myself back into running hard somewhere with less then 3 miles to go.  I have to remember that this was a C race for me but it showed me that my run fitness isn't quite there yet.  My pace faded a fair amount as the miles went on.  I guess that is a pacing issue as well but i think the pace I started at is a good pace for me once my fitness is there to hold that pace.  My running partner's time was only seconds off me so that was pretty cool.

I was looking for that live cam they have of the race but could not find you. I like how you pushed through and dugged deep to get there. Good job on your run.

Fred D - 2012-01-08 3:33 PMGot a little swim in later today and now going to watch the steelers broncos game. Was doing a few sets of breath control 50s. Anyone like doing these, I actually do.
Could you explain to me how you do your breath control 50's and what the purpose of them is? I have heard of people doing them but have not researched the benefits.

Fred D - 2012-01-07 5:21 PM Sure. 50s with rest. 6*50 with first 50 breath every 2nd stroke, then next 50 breath every 3rd stroke, then every 4th stroke etc until you hit breathing every 7th stroke. Then reset and do over. Note, this is NOT hypoxia training, rather it allows you to focus on great form. You are supposed to swim the 50s really easy. Try it sometime, as it also breaks up the monotony.

I enjoy doing the 3/5/7's but more so with a pull buoy.

Do you have a full suit or sleeveless? I pulled the trigger a few days ago and bought one. I know I'll definitely need it for Columbia and for sure NOT for Cozumel. I hope it works better than the last one I had.

Did a little 10k today, finished in 50m 30s, it was close to a PR on a tough course, and i was not even running at full throttle, honestly, i was a little hung over from my daughters 2nd b-day party last night!!

Nice to see progress with my increased volume.

Fred D - 2012-01-07 6:08 PMFunny story.... We were out at a restaurant last night and haing a drink before our meal. The bartender says the drink is courtesy of the manager.turns out he is an ironman and I was wearing an ironman sweater, so that was nice. I talked to him and he did IMFL last year. Small world.
Pretty neat- sometimes we meet other Tri peeps at the least expected moment and we happen to share a common bond.

Hmmm... I might have to give it a shot and see if it works.

running on a hang over, always a good way to clear the system.  lol  Nice job on the race.  But really, you shouldn't be drinking with your daughter if she is only 2.

. Interesting. Honestly even for the FFOP people, they really have to talk themselves into pushing hard at the end. Everyone has to suffer near the end of an endurance event if you are going for a PR. Whether you are a pro or BOP you have to suffer to get there....

Yeah, it is a new mindset I picked up last year.  I as always willing to just take whatever I was feeling and not push it.  I am learning to take my mind to new places but it's still a struggle.  I at least recognize now when I'm losing the edge and can get back the push.
