Ok

So you should practice your transitions!!!!!!!!! My first two T1 practices efforts with the shoes already in the clips led to 1 crash and one near crash.....but then I got it!'

So transition to put shoes on aw 145 and t1 with shoes in was much better even with mini crash as at 145 I was a 2/10s of a mile down the road!!! Wow

Stil need practice but i am for sure running barefoot and jumping on.

Also bought quick clip laces and that made t2 much better

Practice - just as all the experts suggest

Cheers - fun to learn and figure it out!

What's next for you?

1250 in the pool tonight, according to the schedule. Hopefully they fixed the temp problem. The pool shouldn't be warmer then body temp. Ick.

Scheduled Rest Day for me today with the run ... which is a good thing. The ankle is improved from yesterday, and there is no bruising. Still sore and a bit swollen, but I think this should be a quick recovery. I may try some very slow miles tomorrow morning. My left quad, where I landed, is bruised and sore, but nothing too bad.

I'll swim tonight after work for an hour. Somewhere in the 2500-2700 range.

Glad to hear everyone's training is going well and that Troy's ankle injury is not serious.  Sorry I am late with these but here are my April numbers:

Swim 16,750 meters - 6 hours:38 minutes.

Bike 147.45 miles - 8 hours 46 minutes

Run 30.83 miles - 3 hours 48 minutes

I have not run in several weeks due to the hip injury and the damage I did to my shin in changing my gait and pushing my leg in two races ... I have been somewhat depressed leading into this past weekend as I took my first ever DNS for the Long Island half marathon.

Unlike most of you that seemed to get your full week of training in, I unfortunately did not - issues at work have kept me there later than I would like and I miss my training window - in the past I could always squeeze in a quick run but since my trainer broke, and I don't have the cash to purchase a new one at the moment I can't even do an indoor bike (can't leave my boys home alone they are 5 and 7).

Instead of my half this weekend I took my kids to their track meet with my wife and mother in law.  I got roped into working the finish line which was both fun and stressful.  My older son ran in three relays and came away with 2 golds and a bronze.  He prefers longer legs and in both runs where he started the race (both were 100's) his team won - I think he will do great when his age is doing 220 and 440 dashes.  My little guy ran 6 times and got a 5th, two 4ths, and two 3rds.  He is really little compared to some of the other kids but he ran all out regardless of where his team was when he got the baton (he always runs third leg for some reason) ... in his dash (he did the 60) he did not place ...

Started my swim training with Aquafit Masters so hope to improve on my swims.  In mid June we start open water training on Sundays and I am stoked for that.   First time ever swimming with speed fins and my left foot is a blistered mess - need to fix that before next session.  Did my longest swim session to date today - 3000 meters.  Going to do a chest and back workout as well.

My next "race" is the Gran Fondo NY - 104 miles ... I am not worried abut the first 35, in fact I think that should pass fairly quickly - the first of the 4 climbs comes at mile 36 and that is where I will struggle.

My training this week is swimming daily - except for Wednesday when I will attempt to do Yoga.  My wife is away Sat/Sun/Mon which will undoubtedly mess up any weekend training I can have unless my mom or a relative will help out for a few hours.  I took off Saturday and will take my boys to their second track meet and the Avengers ... as much as I would love to get in some long bike rides this week I am not seeing how I can fit it.

Lots of bad food in the house this week - had a communion party for my son on Saturday - so much left over - must have willpower not to eat cake ...

Happy Monday everybody.

Paul, I'm right with you buddy. With injuries and family life it can be a bear to get training done.

Troy, take care of that ankle.

I managed to get in two rides this weekend. Saturday was a 30 mile road ride. Sunday was an hour and a half mountain bike ride.  I also got in a 1 mile pain-free walk.

As for my training goals for last week, I got some training done and had some fun. Goal accomplished!

Goal for this week: get some training done and have some fun.

Craig.

ok, I gotta say it ... with all the injuries and set backs that have been reported in this group over the past couple of weeks? Do you all realize how much you are all still kicking butt and taking names with the training??? Very inspiring to hear how each of you are just focusing on what you CAN do rather than what you've been limited in. It makes it that much easier to get out there and get it done! Also all the support and kind words are fantastic!

Good luck everyone and keep it up!

Got in my swim this morning (which was cut short due to unforseen car issues), will try and get in a ride later today if schedule permits...

Mr. Group Leader,

I failed the challenge. I am embarassed and disgusted with myself. Family came in town and I chose them over training. I also ate a cheeseburger and drank beer and a mint julep at the Kentucky Derby!!! I will not apologize!!! I am going to try and add a little more to my future workouts this month to make up for what I missed over the weekend. I will make my goals this week. Plus, as of now, I will be attempting my second triathlon on Saturday.

Troy, what made you fall? I'm glad you're okay. It's cool you and Scott got to meet. Who is up for a tri in Florida next year? Raise your hands! It will be the inaugural Scott's Mentor Group Triathlon!

I got on the road yesterday for a 22 mile ride. My pr for this route I go is 80 minutes flat. I did it in 82 yesterday. I was a little heavy from all the eating/drinking Saturday.

As of now, I will be attempting my second triathlon on Saturday. It will be an outdoor swim in a lake, a 10 mile ride, and a 5K. The ride is shorter than I like but I am really excited about the swim. The water temp last week was 69. It could be in the lower 70s by now. We have had a hot week. The anxiety is not as high now with one race under my belt. That anticipation of first one made me crazy! I am debating the 'clip shoes on to bike' transition method. I will be committed to my onesie and will not add layers. I screwed that up last time. My T1 needs to be under 1 minute. The only thing I will put on are socks, shades, and helmet.

Today I will head to the pool for a 2000 yd swim at 2:00 minute interval. My legs are sore today but I don't know why. My ride yesterday was nothing out of the ordinary.

Anybody racing this weekend?

I'm a huge clutz. I always have been. I'd love to say I hit an uneven chunk of sidewalk, but I honestly think I just opted to land on the outside edge of my foot rather than the sole. It doesn't work as well that way.

I hear you, Ashley-We don't know how much time we are going to get in this world. Sometimes you have to choose family and loved ones first.

If I could come up with the cash I'd be in for a trip but the cash part is unlikely. Frown

Good luck racing this weekend!

Ashley,
With regards to prioritizing family over training, take a look at the high rate of divorce in this sport. Family first is a good thing! Remember how much you're getting paid to compete in tri. Keep it fun. Nobody likes to "work" for free.

I have spent a TON of money this year on races (and so far only done two of them) ... I try to get in early or take advantage of Schwaggles and get the lowest prices I can get ... the that I am, I have already started plotting NEXT season which may be foolish but in honesty I think it will keep me on track to my goal of Ironman Lake Placid in 2014 ...

Just to share I made myself a list of goals for 2012 which consisted of 5 items ... I plan to do 4 of them now (I did not get into the NY Marathon) my 2012 goals are:  Complete a half marathon (done), Bike over a century (have 2 races planned one in May and one in June) ... complete a full marathon (this is now out as I did not get into NY) and Complete the 1/2 Ironman (September) ...

So my 2013 goals now include the Marathon, complete a Tough Mudder, set a 5k and 10k PR, and I plan to do 2 1/2 Irons with courses EASIER than my one planned for September (I will explain the logic) ...

This is my tenative schedule for next season which is less ambitious (in number of events) compared to this year but by no means easier.

My 2013 plans (tenative) :

March - Queens 1/2 marathon ($45)

April - Tough Mudder (PA) ($125)

May - Bob Potts Marathon ($50) , Bassman 1/2 Ironman ($150)

June - Tour de Chocolate town 100 mile bike ($40)

July - Riverhead Rocks Olympic ($100)

August - Deep Pond Triathalon (sprint) - because I desperately want to swim at that Boy Scout camp and I think my whole family would come ... ($90)

September - Shoreman 1/2 Ironman ($130)

I promised my wife I would not spend over $1000 in race fees next year (I have spent nearly $2k this year) ... the Bob Potts Marathon is a fraction of NY, is partly on trail (where I run better and is less punishing on my body) and my whole family can go stay with my in-laws in Pennsylvania and see me several times on the course if they choose to.   I plan to get the BIG runs done early in the season so I can marathon train over the winter and than transition into tri training by the first half.  The Bassman 1/2 Ironman is flat, has a small field and is typically a very cold swim - as long as I get myself a trainer before the winter I should be good.

I know I am getting ahead of myself with 9 events this year from now until September but I have to keep my eye on the prize ... and that is hearing my name called as an Ironman ...

I had a recovery day today with 1500 easy breezy yards in the pool and a 25 minute recovery run.  No lingering soreness from the intense weekend.  Getting ready for my first tri of the season in TWO weeks!!!  Getting a little jumpy, if you know what I mean.

Wasn't able (willing, really) to kick much with the ankle ... so I spent 2000yds focussing on my bilateral breathing and really working on my pull/catch with the pull buoy. I haven' decided yet if I'm going to try some easy miles in the morning.

I had a great swim last night. 1250yds. total. 5x100 sprints and 550 crawl with 100 warm up and cool down. I'm going to have to speed up because as I was leaving the Aquajoggers were coming in. If I increase my yardage at the same pace I run the risk of being overrun. I like that I feel like I'm pushing my self in the pool now instead of just showing up and swimming.

I'm only running a mile tonight. I'm going to push the pace. I'm gearing up to start speedwork in 2 weeks. I think I scheduled these short runs not expecting to recover so quickly from my HM but my fitness seems to be improving.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Good morning, all!!

I hope everyone had a good day. I hit the pool yesterday for a 2000 yd swim. I am doing 100 yd 2:00 minute intervals. I can see improvements every month. I am not beat after the workout nor do I feel like I can barely finish. I am excited about my progress. I haven't done a 'long swim' yet with no rests but will soon. I am working on my bilateral breathing but it still feels very unnatural. I also want to start working on different strokes.

I strained a groin on my ride Sunday- I think. I did hit some hills with some agression to keep my speed up.  I don't know how I could have hurt it pedaling faster. It is a little sore. I am debating a run today to stretch it out- nothing strenious.

I am mentally going through my race for Saturday. The open water swim part makes me wonder if I am going to get clobbered, kicked, and punched. The swim is a 1/4 mile. I need to focus on staying calm and keeping my pace. My last sprint was an indoor pool with staggered starts- easy peasy. I have no idea how this will go so I am excited. Gotta swim outside if I am going to prepare for Kona!

Train hard today! (or easy if your groin is sore)

Giving the ankle another day of rest from the run. Hopefully I can get out there for some easy miles tomorrow. It continues to improve, but it just felt a little iffy yet this morning. I'd hate to roll it again, even just a little bit. I may skip the first trail run that is scheduled for the week prior to the marathon.

Good morning all.

No training for me yesterday.  However, I did have a session with the chiropractor and massage therapist. They work my legs over good. I can't believe how sore I am today. I will definitely have a session with the foam roller today.

Should be heading to the pool today for 2000 yards. Also intend to do a 1 mile walk.

Have fun, be safe.

Tried running down the street and groin hurts- darn. Pedaled on the bike some and felt okay, not great. Could swim again. I don't know what I did. Do I rest a few days and do a little to keep muscles loose. Do a little riding and work through it? Don't know....

Ashley,

Don't push it.  You don't want to jeopardize your race this weekend.  Listen to your body.  You don't need any additional running to get ready.  You ARE ready.  Pushing will most likely result in injury.  Swim and cycle only if it doesn't hurt and nothing long.

Ice it lots.  Take an ice baths if you can (water temp around 45 degrees. Don't go Titanic temps).  No heat or Jacuzzi on it.

Stay healthy and kick this weekend.

My 2 cents.

C

Hey Ashley,

I second Craig's statement. Overdoing it at this point with the run will only jeapordize your race. Listen to what your body is telling you and re-evaluate each day. I'm sure you're feeling guilty after your trip and family time but don't. We've all been there and you did the right thing. The kids won't be little forever and racing isn't going anywhere. There will always be another race ... Like this weekend! Hang in there buddy!

Have spent this week so far on drills. Monday was a great swim lesson. Getting much better at keeping balance, and keeping the legs up behind me to minimize resistance. This will come with time. Have another lesson this afternoon. Yesterday I did a short session on the bike trainer doing intervals. needed a good fat melting workout, and getting the legs used to churning at higher resistance for periods of time.

For a little while I'll be following this model, doing shorter drill sessions and getting used to all this new equipment.

I tried ear plugs for the first time, but somewhere during my warmup 200m they both came out. My swimming lessons are at an International School which happens to be on one of the seediest streets in Bangkok. Walking to the lesson is OK -- I wear my earphones and don't pay attention to what's happening around me. But after the lesson my ears are so full of water that my earphones would be ruined, so I have to endure the calls from hundreds of pretty disgusting women offering everything under the sun, including Bangkok's famous "Massage Sir, body to body?"

Ice if you want, but I actually disagree about the heat.  For these type of injuries a nice hot epsom salt bath has done the trick for me.  I wouldn't stretch too much, just take it easy.  I do agree about training though.  The hay is in the barn already. There is no training that you can do to increase your fitness for your race this weekend.  Our bodies don't adapt that quickly.  Spin on the bike nice and easy, go for a swim to keep yourself fresh, but I wouldn't run at all right now.  Good luck and keep us in the loop.
