Geez John, somebody might think you were serious about the Worlds. wink.

Question, tri club track work out tomorrow is run 2 miles at 15 beats below LT. Then run 2 more miles at 5-10 beats below LT.

What is the purpose of this workout? Yes I will ask them tomorrow.

Are you asking me? No expert but here's my two bits.

Your LT or lactate threshold is when you are no longer working anaerobically; your body starts producing lactate acid. Keeping your workout below this point insures a fresh supply of oxygen to the muscles allowing you to continue the function you are attempting to perform. Each discipline in the tri has a different threshold and it changes as your fitness changes. There are articles in BT explaining how to perform a test to determine what yours is.

Basically, you are doing a hard tempo run.  The purpose is to get your body use to working at or near LT so you become more efficient in that area.  LT is ideally where you want to be for race pace.  If you do workouts in this duration, it helps your body adapt and when you combine it with hard interval work, it will increase your LT.

I bet there is like a 5 min interval between those two.

This discussion on tempo runs and training at or near LT is something that I had questions to yesterday.   What HR zone 1 - 5c is associated with LT?  I'm guessing it is high zone 4 to low zone 5a but I'm not 100% sure.

The bottom of Zone 5 is your LT.  Case in point, my run LT is 171.  My Z4 numbers are: 164 - 170 and my Z5 numbers are: 171-174

Hi

My 2 cents - on LT - Mine is 187 - my last race could hold there for a few miles - lost my big kick @ the end (5mile race - uphill) Average HRT started going down - In after race analysis - should have held back little more middle miles - keeping lower zone for longer then I could have out kicked my competition. In my opinion, you need to know for racing where the LT is and stay below it - same holds for training - i rarely train in high LT zones for tempo running - in fact I don't even do track speed workouts - until race day.

Hey guys!  I just wanted to let you know that I am going to be in Chicago next week, so I am going to have pretty limited access to the internet.  But, have no fear;  I will be thinking of you the whole time while I am eating my Chicago-style deep dish pizza that overflows with cheesy super-fantastic deliciousness.

(That one is for you, Dan!  Pay back is a bee-otch, ain't it?)

I hope you guys have a great week!

Finally getting warm in Ohio - just had the greatest brick workout yesterday - all the training during winter really pays off - I was worried about the bike riding - since all the snow made it impossible to ride outside. Rode the bike for 1 hour - felt like flying (avg 18.9) 2nd 1/2 into the pouring rain -have never riden much in rain - good practice incase it rains for race - LC Du 2 weeks and counting - then followed by 10 mile run - felt effortless in zone 2 @ 7:20's - crazy!!
2 hour ride on tap for today - Sunny and 60's

Love those break through workouts... anybody else?

Hmm, well was having a great week and then got hit with a cold-flu that made me sleep for 20 hours. Feeling better now but not as motivated as I normally am. I know me, its time for a break. Heading to Calgary to visit our Grandaughter who is 13. She is staying at the hotel with us which is downtown along the river. Has a pool and a great path to run on. Looking forward to it.

Have fun everyone, I'm going to dog it for a long weekend starting this Thursday.

Taking a break when the body asks for it is a good thing.  Always listen to your body.

I just wanted to tell everyone that I had a great race on Sat.  It was my first sprint since 2000, pre-surgery and all that jazz, so I was more than nervous.  I ended up 7th overall and 1st in my Age Group.  I was the first non-elite to finish.  I shocked myself to be honest.

So it's all about the effort.  If I can do it...anyone can.  Now get out there!!!

I had a decent weekend.  I spent lots of time on the bike, well lots by my standards.  Spring has finally shown up so I'm hoping to get outside and ride/run.  Last week was my first week of the BT oly plan I'm following.  I was curious so I compared the volume to what I've done over the last 12 months.  This past week was the biggest volume week I've had so far since becoming addicted to this hobby.  The best part is I feel pretty good today.  Not as beat up as I thought I would!

John - enjoy that time off!

Michelle - it sounds like you are going to rock that du in two weeks.  Great job on the training.

Dan - I'm honored to have selected you as my mentor when they started this mentor program.  Great results, great results!

Great job getting out there!  Isn't is awesome when you have breakthrough workouts?  I too am honored that you chose me.  I was hoping that I had something to offer people.  And the way I see it, I am great at encourging others.

Unfortunately, Michelle is going to demolish me at Du's in a couple of weeks.  I'll have to search out her bike and steal her wheels.

I am writing my RR right now.  I'm turning pro when you pay for all of my bills.  :P  Although, I did make $100 technically.  As part of my sponsorship, I put in a performance incentive.  So Conte's and The Runner's Source get to reimburse me for my entry fee.  :P

Great Report Dan!  Very informative, with tips and made me laugh at parts.

No wonder you're sponsored by Nuun, you're a great spokesperson for them: "Tri-Berry Nuun tastes just as good coming up as it does going down"Laughing
