LISA -

75 is wetsuit-legal according to USAT rules......but do you even own a wetsuit? One of my other group is from Atlanta, and she doesn't even bother with one, as most of her races are not wetsuit-legal.

If you own a wetsuit, did you use it yesterday? Just curious!

And from denise's post above, well, the fact that she even posted suggests that she is none the worse for wear for having done the post-race smelt fry. Did you survive your own post-race Mexican and margaritas?

You're breathing! This is good!

And what was your post-race feast -- a keg of grog or mead to wash down a hapless goat, braised to a farethewell on a spit over a bed of red-hot coals?

THE QUIET JOYS OF "VICARIOUS RACING"

I had given some thought to doing a local duathlon yesterday, but that would've paled in comparison to the pleasure I have gotten out of following the exploits of the four of you -- LISA, DWAYNE, DENISE, STEVE. This is just too much fun! (And hopefully it was as much fun for you as it's been for me! )

Rough count has 250 registered for Pirate. Do you know what they close out at? Glad I got in while the goin' was good!

One of the relay teams is the Peg-legg'd Pretties. Cute!

Only one other in my a.g., though. I HATE when that happens!

Dumb Red Sox -- lost two straight to Baltimore. I REALLY hate when THAT happens!!!

Aren't we humans strange.  Yesterday on the bike course, with the horrible wind, all I could think of was how miserable I was.
2 minutes after the race was over, all I could think of was "What a blast that was."
Denise
ps - It will probably take a little longer for SteveA to appreciate yesterday

WOOHOO, STEVE A is an IRONMAN!!!!!  Congratulations!!  Can't wait to hear all about it?  Enjoy your next few days of rest!!

ANNE, the birdwatching sounds like it was lots of fun.  I enjoyed conjuring up the image of those little birds resting after crossing Erie.  Must be a sight.

STEVE B, I did buy two wetsuits in anticipation of using them at Lone Star but sent them back.  I have never liked anything tight on my body especially around the neck.  The water was very tolerable yesterday.  I wish I would have had the chance to get up in for a warm up swim but that would have meant waiting around in a wetsuit for an hour waiting for my wave (and never drying out with the humidity we had).

It is a beautiful morning this morning as a cool front blew through ... no humidity, around 68 right now, with a high of 86 predicted (why couldn't we have this weather yesterday!).  I'm off to WalMart to buy our favorite pool floats ... cheap, and have to be replenished every season, but their the best.  We always buy around 4 early in the season because they sell out quick!  Guess I'll check to see if there are any flowers I can't live with out, get back and do a little housecleaning, and then ... you guessed it, it's pool time!!

LISA -

Something to keep in mind for a future wetsuit is DeSoto. Their suits are two-piece, which takes some getting used to (especially for people wo have spent lots of time in conventional one-piece wetsuits), but the advantage you might find is that they ride very low in the neck. In fact, they hardly hit the neck at all. They are also quite supple, which helps with overall tightness; i.e., supple suits are less constrictive.

Their website is www.desotosports.com, and they have phenomenal customer service, too. Just so you know!

I think we're hard-wired (or is it soft-wired?) to suffer miserably, and then recover quickly. Or maybe it's just a short attention span..........that the pain feels so good when it stops (Tales of a Reluctant Masochist).

I can't tell you the number of times I've been in a race and thought "Never again!!" ---- and then signed up for the same race the following year. (Slow learner, you think?)

I think the cut-off is 300.  They sold out last year and it was the first year of that tri!

I hope more join your AG!

Last year folks didn't get too much into the Pirate theme, but I think this year is going to be different given some of the cool relay teams names.

I can't talk about the Red Sox right now, I am in mourning.

SteveB,

I now thank my mother for throwing me into the water every summer from age 6 to 16 for some sort of swim lessons through one step shy of lifegaurd training. Most of it, I'm sure was more or less thrashing in the water but the benefit really comes in being comfortable in the water. Maybe I had a base of technique that has come back but I sure never was fast compared to others then in my AG in the 200-500 swims. Still not sure if I trust the stopwatch. Need to check that soon.

My one thought on the drink and gels is that I'm finally actually fueling for success in the training vs probably not eating enough. Especially around times of workouts.

Finally feel like this cold is getting better. Going to rest today in hopes I am good to go for tomorrow and Week 8.

The SMELT FRY was great, as usual.  They had 400 people in the 1st 15 minutes.  That's more than the town population.  People come from all over.  It's a step above the usual fish fry.
After the smelt fry, I came home and had:
  -  a giant truffle with gold dust and a chocolate covered coffee bean
  -  a chocolate-peanut butter brownie
  - a piece of apple cake with cream cheese frosting (made from apples from the coffee shop owner's apple tree)
Then I took some bicarb and went to bed.

First tri of the season, over and done with!  Thanks for all the well wishes, and STEVE B for the splash down!!  Unofficial time of 1:52:58 (which I think will be pretty accurate).  Temp 79 degrees at start of race.  Had problems controlling my breathing on the swim (water temp 76 degreesSmile) ... can't wait to practice some OWS in Arkansas next month; bike felt great; and run was OK; transitions were OK.  Temp 85 degrees on the way home.  Really nice race and definitely plan on keeping it on as one of my regulars.

Hope DENISE and DWAYNE have/had great races!  And can't wait for the next update on STEVE A ... I tried to figure out how to track him last night but couldn't figure it out, so keep the updates coming.  Thought of all you during my race ... DENISE's nice pool swim while I was in the lake hyperventilating, STEVE A's red hills bike ride as I was biking in the woods, and DWAYNE's firey run (wasn't there something about fire in the Warrior Race) while I was sweating the run!

Keep up the good work everyone!!  Now off to do some chores at my mother's house.

Lisa

Congratulations Lisa!

Is a water temperature of 76 degrees supposed to be cold? I have no idea since I have no frame of reference. Sounds warm to me though!

Hi,

Just got back - have to leave for BACKUS SMELT FRY.  Got 1st place age group (60 & up - only 2 in my age group, haha).
Wind was horrible, horrible.  Can't wait to compare the other bike times - mine was so bad.

Later, Denise

Congratulations Denise! That's so great that you finished 1st in your age group. And no matter that there were only 2 of you. I think the fact that there were only 2 competitors in your group is just further proof of your AWESOMENESS!

Tracey

stevebradley - 2010-05-01 8:16 AM TRACEY - Just to fill in a gap here until Anne returns from Pelee..... I think "specialization" refers to your nutritional protocol leading up to a particular race or two, or maybe even a full competitive season, while "transition" would cover the off-season. I might use it this way: Foundation: January-March Perparation: April-May Specialization: June-October Transition: November-December But Anne, when she gets back from the world of Carolina Wrens and Blackburnian Warblers, can tell us with much more exactitude.

TRACEY, and STEVE,

Thanks Steve.       That is pretty much exactly bang on.    My months might not exactly match Steve's or say, yours Tracey - depends on when you want to start your training year.    I like to use a yearly cycle but start my Foundation in November and go till end of Feb; Prep is March-May; Specialization is June-August and Transition Sept-Oct.    If you use a 12 week training program then all those phases would be much shorter.

The terms Foundation (or base training) and Transition (off season training-10-20% reduction of volume and often includes some or all cross training) is pretty common terminology among most coaches, trainers, books, etc.    The term Preparation (used by Carmichael) is referred to by others as Build and some trainers will have 1 to 3 build phases;  The term Specialization is referred to as Peak by others, and will include your taper.

I think there are even other terms used for the different phases of training, but I latched onto Carmichael's because it made sense to me.   Hope that helps.

Thanks Anne and Steve. I assume if one is aiming for weight loss, they should deduct the appropriate amount of calories?

Haha! Good call. I signed up for the one in the Rockies on August 21st, although I just found out I may be out of town. Boo I would've waited to know for sure, but all the mid-day waves were already filled, so in order to not have to go dead last at 5 pm, I am now scheduled to race at 9:30. And then I have a whole day to fill with warrior debauchery. Mwahaha.
