Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's my official data. I was very pleased with it. Training is paying off. I was 19th in my age bracket, 101st over all. I did get beat by two peole over 60--There's some motivation! The best part was, I had fun the whole race. Even the swim--I was in a great mood and enjoying it all. I never thought I'd be able to say that. Total 2:44:50 Swim 0:31:54 T1 3:16 Bike 1:14:54 T2 2:02 Run 0:52:44 |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jaime, Wow--You're Aquaman! What a swim! And those transitions?? You were barely over 1:00 on T1? I'm hardly to my bike by 2:00 minutes. Great job. Good job with the heat, too. Mine was the opposite--too cold. I wore a jacket on the ride. What's next for your summer? Edited by gplitt 2009-06-22 5:53 PM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great race Boxer! Was it a no-wetsuit race because of the warm water? That would probably help explain the T1 time, lol. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Greg - Mike thanks a lot!! I used to windsurf in very cold weather and I hated getting out my wetsuit, can't imagine doing it in a hurry/hyperventilated!!! But soon will happen to me, fall and winter seasons. Yeah, I'm happy with the race, except the running part............ Next, I'll be doing a sprint in Charleston, SC on Aug 2. I think I'll wait for end of summer to go with a longer distance. I remember from my running days, I never liked 5 ks, so maybe I'll enjoy the longer distances. I'm really looking forward to them, but I better get a few more sprints under the belt. (and a lot more training) How are you guys doing? What's next on your calendar? |

GOOD LUCK and have a blast! This is my last weekend off before my first HIM, and then I will have to bid this forum and all you lovely people goodbye for 6 weeks as I go to Peru! Do the mentor-mentee groups usually last up until end of the summer, or do they end before I get back, in the middle of August? |

In other news, we're finally getting some dead fabulous summer weather these last few days: 25-30C and sunny with not a cloud in the sky. The wind isn't too strong most days either. PERFECT biking weather, I say! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm curious about stretching -- do you do it, what do you do, etc. I tried to run yesterday but stopped at just a mile and a half. My left knee/calf/ankle would not loosen up, and my leg felt like it was thudding on the ground with each step. So -- any tips you care to share with an old man? |
|
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, heres one for not stretching. I've tried to get into it, but I never notice a difference. If you want to try, do some sort of total body stretching, don't just yank on your quads before a run. Take some time, instead of lifting, do a stretching program for an hour or so once a week. Find a video or something like that that appeals to you, and give it a shot. I think its like yoga, some people get super into it, others don't. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() If I'm ever having problems with not feeling loose, i try to walk more before the run. I'm not a fan of stretching cold muscles and I've never felt much better after doing it, but a good walk tends to loosen things up and get the heart pumping a bit. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() David, how was your Olympic? What do you think of the DeSotto T1 wetsuit? Smart1. It comes separate bibjohn and pullover. I don't need anything too thick around here. Thanks Just finished a great training week, adapting to train on the road. This coming week will be a challenge, hitting the road again on Tuesday for about a week. ![]() Here's the new racing calendar: - Aug 2 Charleston, SC sprint tri (Lots of people) - Sep 6 Virginia Beach, VA Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon (Supposed to be a lot of fun!) - Oct 11 St. Simon Island, GA Sprint Tri - Boys Ranch, Fla OLYMPIC TRIATHLON !!!! I'm pretty exited about this one!!! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good job everybody--it sounds like we're all addicted. I got food poisoning last Sunday--that was my Father's day present. I think it hit worse coming off my olympic the day before as my body was pretty spent. I was down Sunday-Tuesday, and I've had six workouts since but I still feel pretty weak. I feel like I have no legs under me and no energy. I'm going to kick up my training starting tonight, but I don't know how I'll respond. Krystyna--Your 70.3 is next weekend? Tell me how you're planning on tapering. |

That will suck the energy right out of you! Take it easy and recover, drink lots of fluids! (That's the extent of my "expert knowledge") AND THEN GET RIGHT BACK TO TRI-ING! ![]() Yep, I've got 1 week of tapering and then I have to face the music... I've already begun my tapering. I'm taking more days off, and on the days that I do swim, bike, or run, I make sure that nothing is ever challenging enough that I'll "feel it" afterwards. Everything is light, comfortable. And I'm not doing crazy long distances, either. What I find, though, is that TAPERING SUCKS! I'm all antsy because of what awaits, and thus want to train hard to ensure that I'm stronger and fitter, but if I continue to do so, I'll just be deeply and internally physically exhausted. So... I'm just sitting here going nuts. How is everyone else's training going?! Talk, everybody, talk!! Any races? Describe your ideal race, or your long-term goal, or your plans for the next year! Anything! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OH and here's a question! What's carboloading? Why and when do you do it? All I seem to know about it is that athletes eat just a bit more pasta and other delicious carbohydrates 1-3 days before a race... is there anything more to it than that?! |
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got done with an 11 mile run. All I can say is "ouch!" My hip flexers are killing me. But--I did it--longest run of my life. Krystyna, I just read an article in a cycling magazine about how carb loading doesn't work as the body can't store them that long, but passes everything you would need, and that eating them closer to the race to get the benefit would be a bad idea. Everything I know/have read says to stay with the same diet you trained with and then do your race day additions (gels, endurance powders or whatever). I'll try to find the article for you tomorrow--I'm too sore and fried right now. |

I'm pretty exited about this one!!! That's some race calendar! I skipped my olympic (which was 2 hours away) and just worked out here, getting started at about 6:30am. I did a nice tune-up for my 1/2 in two weeks, and while I doubt I will hit my #1 goal time, I should finish, and hopefully set a PR while I do it. I cannot believe that we are at the end of June. I've never worn a DeSotto, so I have no first hand opinion. But try it out. If it works for you, then it's a good suit. Xterra wetsuits still has $200 off most of its line until Tuesday. I just ordered a sleeveless one. |

All I seem to know about it is that athletes eat just a bit more pasta and other delicious carbohydrates 1-3 days before a race... is there anything more to it than that?! Well, who doesn't like carbs? But I don't really do it. I'll eat a bit more bread, pasta, etc in the few days before a race, but I'm not out the night before eating a pound of pasta. It makes me feel heavy, and that's just not a feeling I want at 5am when I'm walking into a transition area. However, there are thousands of people who will swear by it. The key to any nutrition plan is to fuel your body. If you have enough, you'll race well. Not enough, and the day sucks. I've read about topping off the glycogen tank but, to be candid, I just don't know enough about the science to explain it or believe/non-believe in it. But I do swear by my pizza the afternoon before a race. Maybe it's just a personal superstition, but I always seem to do well when I eat it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I forgot to mention, lately I've been experimenting with Hammer Perpetuem. I think that's the spelling. It has worked well for the long rides and runs so far. The real test is next weekend. No other gels, bars, etc., needed. |
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That'll be interesting for nutrition... let us know how it goes. I just got a box of clif shot blocks, and some gatorade endurance. Its finally warm enough where I need some type of sports drink instead of just water. And on the like bike rides, i really like having something to chew. I tried the gels, and they were horrible, ew. |

I just got a box of clif shot blocks, and some gatorade endurance. Its finally warm enough where I need some type of sports drink instead of just water. And on the like bike rides, i really like having something to chew. I tried the gels, and they were horrible, ew. Oh! I love the clif shot blocks; wayyy better than the gels, I don't know how people can stomach those! Here's my HIM nutrition plan: Pre-race (from the night before up until the race start): Regular food, lots of water, sipping gatorade throughout the night and up until the race start Swim: None, it's a short swim Bike: Wait 15-20 min before I start drinking/eating and taking Advil/Tylenol for my knee. On the bike, I will have 2 Gatorade flavors in 2 bottles (in case of flavour fatigue), 1 water bottle, 2 clif bars cut into pieces for easy chewing and timed intake and 1 gel that contains caffeine which I will take 20-30 min before the end of the ride, to give myself an extra "kick" for the run -- I never consume caffeine so it should have a pretty pronounced effect! Run: I will bring clif blocks with me in my trisuit pocket, but I will rely on Gatorade and water at water stations to keep me fueled, hydrated and cool. Do you think there's something I am missing? |
