how about if i swim a mile for the first time!  actually it was 1.11.   i don't know why, i just got in the pool and started going.  i feel great right now.  WOW.  i had to post on the main thread...probably looks stupid but i don't care.

Argh!!!!! A week or two ago you posted a 50 miler on the bike, so the competative side in me took over, and I did my first 50 miler. Now I'm going to have to attempt a 1.12 mile swim. I think I liked it better when you were sitting on the couch drinking beers, knitting and complaining about the race you missed due to a broken fingernail, or whatever it was.
Today is officially the last day I call you Sally. You've earned it my friend. You are a triathlete!!!
Nice work, and keep it up!

I just looked at your goals section and noticed the sub 23 minute 5k. Have you been doing the strides workouts on our HIM plan? I've done 3 them so far. 20 second strides every 5 minutes for 40 minutes. I've gone 4.4 miles, 4.6 miles and 4.89 miles on those three occasions. My speed is definatly improving. I haven't felt like my speed was doing much for the last few months. Before those 3 stride workouts I didn't have anything other than volume. I highly recomend those workouts, and think they will help you reach your 23 min 5 k in no time.

strides....i'm glad you posted that because i was going to ask how you did them.  i haven't been doing them but only because this is my first week on the program.  i'm starting it at week 12 so it looks like thursday will be my first strides.

i did a track workout, if that's what you want to call it a few weeks back and could tell that even that one time helped me speed out.  so yeah, i'm really looking forward to picking up the pace.  esp. after those 10 minute miles on sunday.

I felt great through about 40 miles, then I kind of hit a wall. It was pretty slow going after that.

Now that I said that, I just looked at my data from the ride. The first half I averaged 16.7 mph, and the second half 18.2 mph. There was a pretty nasty wind in the face on the way out though. All in all I would say it was a good ride.

sigepbrad - 2009-04-06 11:35 AM Great job to both of you! I'm now officially the only rookie left. In two more weeks I'll have a swim / run race under my belt. We have to wait for the weather to break before we can start playing in Michigan.
All in all it went well though John? Sounds like you had a blast. So, do you think this is just a phase, or are you in it for the long haul?
Well, back to the grind for me. I'll try to get a real avatar soon, but this one should work for now.

whoa, sorry i missed this Brad.  i'm thinking long haul.  it was so much fun!  are your children old enough to yell your name? if so, thats one of the coolest parts of raceday.   i like the avatar buddy.

Sort of. My daughter is 2 so she just yells Go Daddy!!! can't complain about that.
I've replaced my entire wardrobe because non of my old clothes fit anymore. My wife won't let me get rid of them yet because she thinks this is just another one of my phases.
Mountain Biking, Skydiving, rock climbing, sailboat racing, fly fishing and triathlon. These are the most recent ones, and only the last 3 are left. sailing and fly fishing are just hanging on by a thread.

On another note, I bought a wetsuit last night. I got a QR Ultra Full for $100. It was marked $239. I know the guy at the bike shop and they are getting rid of them. I told my wife I am going to maker her take a picture of me in the bathtub with it on tonight. I see a new avatar on the horizon!

Felt great. I only stopped because they made me. They closed the pool. I've put in more distance in one hour at masters, but never non stop that far. It was good stuff.
I saw your 2600. Nice work! I can't wait for open water. The bottom of my pool is getting a little boring.

Nice work Brad and John, you guys are doing great.  Make sure you are taking advantage of those down weeks to recover and full absorb the training.  Remember, you only get stronger when you are resting!

Glad to see you are both benefiting from the stride workouts.  In addition to the fartlek-style runs you are doing, you can also add strides to the end of your runs.  I will frequently do them at the end of a 3-5 miler and usually do an easy 0.5 to 1 mile easy cool down jog afterwards.  Something else you will want to add to the mix on your long runs in negative splits or fast finish.  Basically increase the pace during the second half of your runs (compared to the first half) and/or a really strong increased pace last 5K.  Enjoy!

Hey everyone,
Hope training is going well.  I've been sick the past few days so workouts have been real light/non-existant.  Now that I've done a sprint triathlon, I'm wondering how to improve upon my times/performance?  I can swim about 750/800m in 15 minutes at best.  How do I get better at this?  I really am clueless about swim training.  Also how can I improve my run? I want to get down to 7 min miles for 3 miles consecutively - this is a far off goal but I'm hoping I can achieve it.  Any training tips would be very appreciated! Thanks.

PS) Is anyone on twitter?  If so you can friend me, search JeanMarie and my name is JeanMarie87.

Hey JeanMarie, glad you are still with us!!

Improving swim times?  It's all about form.  2:00/100m is very respectable for someone with no competitive swim background!  Do you have access to a master's program or a swim coach thru your university?  How about someone from the swim team?

Run times?  Form and turnover/cadence.  Tell me some more about your current runs.  What do you feel is limiting you?  In other words, what "gives" first when you try to run fast?  Legs fatigue quickly?  Out of breath?   See some of the exchanges above with Brad and John re strides.  I would recommend that you start doing these twice a week as part of your run training.

Also, for both disciplines, having someone video your stroke/form is VERY helpful in understanding inefficiencies.

I'm going to try to find a masters swim class - I really haven't looked.  I also don't have a ton of money to spend on lessons or anything (college student here).  I was also thinking about getting "Total Immersion" off amazon? any good reviews on this?  As far as the run, two things limit me: I've been finding the treadmill BORING and will start running outside (its also a matter of convienence, I've been swimming and biking indoors so its easier to just do the run there I guess..) but I'm getting a bike soon and am starting outdoor training.  Also, for the run, I guess my problem in the triathlon was my legs were DEAD musclar-wise.  I did feel cramp pain/sick since I was really pushing it to my limit.  Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks. yeah, it's hard to beleive I created her huh? Even harder to beleive that I'm responsible for how she's going to turn out!! Good thing my wife is here!!

Yeah, it is, but since the wetsuit is so baggy and oversized, you can't see it. In fact, my swim coach told me I'd never be fast in the pool cause i'm packin so much heat. Too much drag.

Disclaimer #1 - Not true

Disclaimer #2 - I may be 30 years old, but I can still act like a 12 year old with the best of them. Hope your not offended Jean MarieSmile

Masters is the best thing I've done for my training. Practicing what you are currently doing in the pool will only reinforce the bad habits you have. In masters they will break down your stroke, and make you practice over and over. I highly recomend this.
Total Immersion - I think I have one of these that I don't use. THere are a lot of great drills in there that will help your stroke. I'll check this weekend and send it to you if you want. If you don't hear anything from me by monday, remind me.

Hey, Thanks so much, yeah definitely let me know if total immersion is useful.  I'm really looking forward to becoming a better swimmer and hopefully swimming outdoors when it gets nice.  When do you guys start swimming outdoors?  I live on Long Island NY, the water isn't very warm until July.  Should I get a wetsuit?  Geez triathlon is so expensive! haha

The TI stuff is good.  You should be able to get a copy of the book at your local library you can get a really good handle on what they are preaching by watching the free teaser videos on their website.

If you just can't swing a master's group or swim lessons, talk with your lifeguard and try to get hooked up with one of the local swim gurus.  I've never been turned down when asking someone to watch my stroke and provide some pointers.  Can't hurt to ask!

The best way to improve at running off the bike is to keep practicing it.  Not every bike workout of course, I'd suggest a brick once per week to 10 days.  Are you doing any speed work as part of your training plan?

Here in West Michigan, we won't be swimming outside until late-ish May unless we have some freakish heat wave.  Even then, the temps will be in the upper 50's.  Doable in a wetsuit, but still quite "refreshing"......

Hope everybody enjoyed their Easter Weekend. I know I did. did a 50 miler on the bike on Saturday. Just got back from a 10.8 mile run tonight. I'm starting to develop a bit of a knee issue. I'm getting pain on the outside of my left knee on my long runs. first time it happened toward the end of an 11 miler. tonight the pain started around mile 5 or so. A little poking around on BT makes me think it might be IT band, but I don't have the slightest idea what I'm talking about. Could be sars for all I know.
Good news is my good friend is a physical therapist, and he's married to an Iron Woman. She's also a PT. They should be able to help me.
Been pretty quite lately. Hope everyone is doing well.
