titeloops - 2010-01-23 6:38 PM Current weight 173, Goal 165, super secret goal 160

Sounds like the super secret goal of 160 is a secret to who?  My wife and kids are always on me for looking to thin at times.  If that is what you mean for a "super secret goal" that is just to funny!
Brian
More super secret cause I haven't seen that weight in years, and I'm gonna really have to get the diet straight to reach it.Also, I feel you guys on the time constraints. I have 3 kids. They are 4,2, and 5 months. Also own 2 businesses. Sometimes time is hard to come by.

Just purchased a Vector Pro X2 Fullsuit Westsuit.  I have been looking for a couple of weeks.  I am off in two weeks and plan on doing a couple of open water swims to try it out.  I opted for the full sleeve.  I have 2 races I will use in for already in 2010 (Great Escape March, Great Floridian Oct). Not sure I would need it for St Anthony in April.

Oh boy am I sick all of a sudden.  Started last night.

My son has had the same thing for a few days.  Now I get to expel bodily fluids in nearly every possible way.  I feel like a wet noodle.

Weekly Totals
Swim - 6700 yards, 1:57
Bike - 98.9 miles, 5:15
Run - 17.27 miles, 2:30

I missed yesterday's workouts(2 hr bike, 3200 yards swim), because everyone in the house was sick... except me.  So I guess I'll be hoving the pale tonight. So Wade I know how you feel.

Bill Engvall says you should eat peanut butter.  It taste the same coming up as it did going down.

So I need help swimming...

I'm trying to setup another appointment with my swim instructor but I would like to get some other opinions as well.  My problem has to do with breathing.  I can only breath on one side (my right) but I'm not sure what to do with my left arm when I roll over to breath.  I'm sure this sounds silly.  I keep trying to take a stroke with my left arm but I end up basically sweeping it across my chest.  Not only is the inefficient but I'm starting to feel a lot of extra strain on my left shoulder because of it.  Should I keep my left arm out until I've finished breathing and roll back over?  When I try to stay rolled over I sink and get a breath of half air, half water.   Any tricks or drills to help with this?

Not weird at all. I have the same problem. What I've found helps is doing the "Catch up" drill. It helps you to keep that left arm out a little longer until you can take a breath and get you head back down. That way you can start to rotate back to your left and your left arm stroke can finish beside your body rather than at your chest. I'm no expert, and I'm really struggling with the swim, but I've been taking lessons for a while now, and I have the exact same problem. Hope I'm not giving bad advice, so you swim experts please chime in. Also tends to help if I just inhale faster and get my head rotated back down.

What type of kicking cadence do you use?  2 beat, where you kick at the end of a pull or do you just kick at will?

x 2 on the catch up drill.   If you have trouble with the catch up drill then get a kickboard and rest one arm on it and work on your pull with one arm at a time.  Do you swim any backstroke and breaststroke?  If no then start, they will help to stregthen supporting muscles and help correct the muscle imbalances you already have.

Felt good enough to do some rock wall goofing at the Y and a near 20 mile ride tonight.

On the hills, my legs were well rested wet toast.  I went exploring and found a new route to work that adds a few miles and some hill work.  I can tell you that I won't be going that way home-- uh uh.

Be well all,

I am living a charmed life. Went to the LBS yesterday and pulled the trigger on a new 2010 Felt B2. It is awesome! Will post pics soon. Pic it up this afternoon.
Then I confirmed that I will be going to Miami in 2 weeks for the SUPER BOWL! Can't wait. This will be my 3rd SB and I've gone to them all on someones elses dime. Makes it even better!! Had to share.

I kick at will.  I've been doing one arm drills with a kickboard but haven't tried the catch up.  I'll give it a try.  I'm meeting my swim coach this evening and I'll report back.

I meet with my swim coach last night.  She gave me some good suggestions (including a drill which seems pretty similar to the catch up drill).  She also noticed that my arms are crossing over when I take a stoke.  I didn't realize that I'm actually reaching across my body somewhat on each stroke and then this is exaggerated when I take a breath.  She suggested that I get a pair of fins because the would make kicking easier and allow me to focus on my arms during certain drills.

Does anyone have recommendations for fin?  I searched the forums a little last night and zoomers seem to be popular.  Reading their website it sounds like I want the blue ones.

BamaDC - 2010-01-22 7:21 AM Okay who's has a goal of weight loss?  It's time to get down to buisness.  Post your current weight and goal weight, or current Body fat % and current %.

I'm currently 173.8 and a goal of sub 165.  That should put me in the 7% body fat range.

Anybody up weekly weigh ins? I'm down 2 lbs this week! 171 before my run this morning.

Non-sequitor for the day?  I've got one.

Broke a spoke on my rear wheel and went to lbs to get it replaced.  As I walk into the bike shop, Daryl comes towards me holding two tires, " Your SNOW TIRES came in!"

I thought that was funny.  I put them on the bike, and will ride it like that for a while.  I worry at dawn when I'm riding home from work in freezing weather.  With the studs, I can at least roll slowly over ice without extreme danger.

Morning brings a run and swim.

As much as i'd love to continue to rave about my new bike, lets talk swimming. Honestly, I stink. Having never really swam without as beer in my hand before, this has been tough for me to grasp. I started taking lessons about 2 months ago from a lady who teaches the masters class at the Y. She sort of does a modified version on total immersion. I gotta tell ya, I really felt like I was going backwards. I would come on this board and read everyones opinion and post my frustrations. i would go to the swim lesson, come and post what she taught me that day, have about 5 people tell me why she was wrong, then during my workouts, pretty much ignore what she taught me. However, about a month ago, I decided that i was gonna stop reading the swim posts and try and do it her way for a while to see if it worked. I've also started doing something a little different in most of my workouts. I start out with her drills, all of which she has me doing with fins on. Then i take the fins off, and swim as many laps as I can. Usually not many. Then I take a breather, and repeat. Gotta tell ya, over the past 2 weeks, something has started to click. I'm still a bad swimmer, but all of a sudden I can feel my balance, roatation and alignment. Rather tan beating the hell out of the water, I can feel the catch and then I pull myself through the water. Not every stroke mind you, but I'm getting better. After my workouts, i feel it in my chest and lats, rather than in my shoulders. I think I'm starting to get it. So to Pat, my swim coach, I apologize. Wish i has listened to you sooner!

My new scale (with BF measurement) should be delivered today so that works great for me.   Is anyone tracking any other measurements?  The log has a section for body measurements covering neck, arms, waist, etc.  I'm curious if anyone is tracking these and if they've found them useful.

Easy 3 miles on the boardwalk in Miami this morning.  Trying to keep the legs loose.  Shooting for a 1:55 - 1:59 Miami ING Half. Start time Sunday is 6:15AM with over 4000 runners.  It was very humid this morning about 65 degrees.  Ran with an oceanview the whole miles.  Going down to South Beach and have breakfast with the wife outside by the ocean.
