mmgoldenb - 2010-05-11 12:44 PM Keiren-
I am in Yardville (Hamilton), but could throw a rock and hit both Burlington and Ocean counties.

The bike shop has been so great and very patient with all my newbie questions. =)

I guess we are the Jersey girls of the group! Are you going to do any of the NJ Triathlons? I am using Keswick Cycle in Cherry Hill. They seem to be very good. Also like Danziesen & Quigley (although they are pricey). I've got to get there soon as I just broke my favorite googles last night.
Keiren, What a small world! I got my tri bike at Keswick (I actually saw them in both stores - Cherry Hill and their PA store, since it's about the same distance to either from where I live). I REALLY liked those guys. Excellent customer service.... And you probably also know that DQ puts on a bunch of tri's in NJ. They're some of my favorite races!

Small world! I do love Keswick. Got a Keswick GC for Mother's Day! We used to ski with D&Q ski club when we were kids and they were a small shop. I'm doing a couple of their local tris this summer.

Hi,
I have a training question. I have been following the 20 week sprint tri program on BT. I am at the end of the 20 week training program but I have 5 weeks until my first sprint tri. Any suggestions as to what my plan should be for the next 5 weeks? Thanks in advance!

Keiren,

I would suggest either repeating the final 5 weeks of the plan you just finished, or pick one of the Olympic plans and do the first 3 or 4 weeks of that plan, followed by 1 or 2 weeks reducing your training load to taper for your race. You probably don't really need a 2 week taper for a sprint tri, but reducing your volume for the last week before your race would probably be a good idea.

I am doing the new inaugural DC Tri (sprint level) on June 20th. Course is .8K swim, 20K bike and 6.7K run. The swim is in the Potomac River.

According to the DC Tri race directors:
The water temperature will be around 70 degrees. We anticipate that it will be wetsuit legal, but won't know for sure until we test the water on race morning.

Do you think I will need a wetsuit? I am not a strong swimmer so I feel I may need the wetsuit. For that temp, would a full or sleeveless wetsuit be ideal?

I would like to order a rental this week so I have time to practice in it.

Lovey,

I think a wetsuit would be a good idea, especially if you're nervous about the swim at all. They really do provide a lot of flotation, and for me, anyway, that gave me a huge sense of security in open water. I don't think it matters much whether you go for full-sleeve or sleeveless. I have only had full sleeve wetsuits, and have never really felt over-heated. The material on the sleeves is very thin. Full sleeve would provide you with a tiny bit more flotation, and supposedly are "faster" than sleeveless suits, but some people don't like the feeling of the sleeves. I think for the conditions you'll be swimming in, it's really a matter of personal preference. If it were me, I would go full sleeve. Have you swum in a wetsuit before?

All I can say is when you swim with one, you will become an instant believer. I have seen some places were you can rent, and if you like it, you could purchase it and they will credit the rental toward the price of the suit.
I bought mine through BT, forum on items for sale. Got a very good WS for what I believe was a great deal. Then of course I've been known to be wrong multiple times. Ignorance is a blessing (in my case)!!!

Did you ever have a workout when NOTHING went right? Back up goggles leaked, had to stop swim. Got on bike, forgot water and ipod. UGH. Big Sweet 16 for my daughter Saturday night so no workout planned until Sunday, then a 5K.

Lovey, let me know how you do with the wetsuit rental. I am on the fence about full wetsuit or sleeveless. Would love to take the cheaper way out and get the $99 sleeveless but part of me thinks I really need the sleeves.

Maybe you guys could place a WTB ad here on BT to see what offers come in for wetsuits.

Major stress setting in. Kid coming home from college in 2wks.  One kid getting ready to grad HS and getting prepped to enter college soon. Totally hectic surgeries today, then off, then to the store to pick up dinner, then zip one to soccer practice, then pick the two track kids, then back to soccer field  to pick up soccer kid. Hopefully things will settle around 8pm. I am giving up the 60 min run today. Time to regroup. On the upside, tommorrow is slow and I am off, and I think I may have found a trainer here that is reasonable. I will contact her tonight.

Thanks, Jeff. I will try to put an ad on the site to see what happens. I just had my 2 boys come home from college. What an adjustment...in many areas of life! By the time we get used to having them home, they leave again!

Jeff - Cool! Same ones I have (but mine are a different color...) Did you buy them in a store, or order them on-line? My kids think they're so funny! And that does sound like a stressful day.... don't sweat missing a workout here or there. I just try to make sure I get my "key" workouts in each week (usually long run and/or bike, maybe speedwork runs closer to event date). Sometimes life just gets in the way....

So - who's racing this weekend? According to training logs, it looks to me like we have:

Cat racing a Sprint tri on Sunday
Elena with a Duathlon on Saturday

Anyone else??

Anybody have any other exciting plans for the weekend? Nothing too earth shattering going on for me.... I'm planning a 2 hour ride with some friends on Saturday, and will probably run on Sunday. Not much else going on here....

WEEK one / DAY 3 of Swim Zero To One Mile in 6 weeks:
4 x 100 yards...rest for 12 breaths between 100s
4 x 50 yards...rest for 8 breaths between 50s
4 x 25 yards...rest for 4 breaths between 25s
total: 700 yards

That is the original workout for week one. My workout ended up being longer. After the second set of 100s, I felt I could have kept going so I did the 3rd and 4th 100 nonstop. I felt good. I moved on to the 4x50s but with a slower pace, I kept going nonstop for 500yards instead!!

I did 500 yards nonstop!! I did it slowly but surely. It took me 23 minutes to do that 500 swim but it doesn’t matter because I did the distance.

My workout ended up being
2 x 100 yards...
1 x 200 yards...
1 x 500 yards...

Total: 900 yards

Hey gang!  You all are so inspirational!  Training when life gets in the way is tough, but so worth it.  Way to go.  =)

I am lucky to be in Vermont hanging out with my parents.  We just managed an 11 mile ride which was great.  Loving the "new" bike.  Some things I learned:
1) Mouth should be closed when possible or bugs fly in.
2) When Vermonters tell you that the ride is a little hilly, that means that you will be in your lowest gear, doing 5 miles an hour, sucking wind,
3) My 60+ year old dad can still kick my butt on the bike.

In all seriousness, it was great.  I am lucky to have my parents around, and that they are fit enough to do fun stuff together.  I think the bike is my favorite.  =

We went to Vermont a couple of years ago and went on some guided hikes each day. We took the "easy" route. OMG! Let's just say it wasn't a peaceful stroll! How great you can bike with your parents!

Keiren:
The shoes: It's all Fernando's fault. He said to read the book "Born to Run" by McDougall. I did the rest is history. Jenny of course did not tell that she already had a pair, uh hmmm. However, in her defense, they are kinda embarassing looking. My kids will probably laugh at me, what's new.

The ad: I think you just do the for sale button thingy. But on the title of the thing to sell you advertise WTB: Female wet suit wanted etc.....what ever you want to write. Let us know if that works. I have had some questions on this site and I have mailed marmadaddy before and has gotten back to me very timely.

Jenny: I bought them online but followed the sizing directions exactly. Measuring my foot against the wall etc..I hear they are difficult to put on at first?
