In under the wire. Any California Bay Area folks on here?

Hi Dave!
I grew up in the Bay Area and still have lots of friends and family that live there! Moved to Texas a little over three years ago.

Welcome!

Hi!

Anyone have hotel recommendations? Something close to the start, not super expensive, and not a total dump would be slick!

Most (if not all) the hotels close to the action have been sold out within a week or two of registration opening.  Finding a hotel isn't going to be a problem with Houston just 25 miles south of the race site but finding one in The Woodlands might prove extremely difficult.

If you are needing a room for Ironman, you might check with the Comfort Suites at Louetta and I45 in Spring, just a few exits south of the Woodlands.  I just checked and there are rooms still available.  The hotel is only about a year old so I'm assuming the rooms are still relatively fresh and clean.  Try this promotional code (I got off a Walmart atlas years ago) ... it is always cheaper than any other rates availabe at the Comfort Inns.  They have a liberal cancellation policy, so if something ends up opening up closer, you can always cancel your reservation.

I won't be racing but will definitely be there volunteering and cheering everyone on.

There are a LOT of hotels in North Houston/Spring/Woodlands.  At this point it may be hard to find one within 5 minutes of the race, but within a 15 minute radius, there shouldn't be any problem finding places to stay.  Check out the IAH hotels as well as Spring.

Greenspoint has a few as well (lock your car doors though)!

Conroe has a few hotels just off I-45 and it is only 15 minutes or so from the start.

By way of information, it seems there are still rooms available close to the race start/finish. If you don't ask for the "Ironman" group at the Hilton, they tell you they are sold out but there is a block of rooms available for that group. This may also be true for other hotels.

Based on two double beds...

Residence Inn - Sold out
Courtyard - $199
Woodlands Waterway - $199
Hilton Garden Inn - $155
Drury Inn - $94ish (ask for eSaver rate)

I went with the Drury Inn since it's still close to the action, and has free stuff that the Hilton would have likely charged me extra for (breakfast/internet).

Just an fyi, the connection from fish creek, across 2854 and onto mcaleb is not finished. It's an easy detour (cut over to honea egypt about 1 mile beforehand and up to 2854) but would hate for you guys to waste a lot of time and frustration trying to figure it out.

Looks like a good course! not sure if its the real deal, but it sure could be.

Have not raced the Ironstar Course in a couple of years but isn't Richards (little store there?) where the road becomes some pretty evil chip and seal?

Richards does have a small store, and there is a little chip-seal right around there, but it's not too bad. The worst part of the route shown are the sections along 105, especially from Dobbin to Montgomery. The road has good shoulders, but it's fairly high traffic and some partds have got rumble strips about a foot inside the shoulder.  I'm guessing there'd be a lot of flats and more than a couple crashes if people have to worry about the rumble strips. There are several "back road" alternatives to riding on both the in and the out sections of 105 that would be a big improvement.

I think that instead of coming back up 105, it should cross over at Dobbin and continue down 1486 to 1488 in Magnolia and come back in that way.  They are currently widening 1488.  The only problem would be with traffic in Magnolia.  That might be too big of a mess to work around.

I do remember reading or someone saying that magnolia officials would be meet with.  "if" that is the case then the route would go through that area.  BTW, 1774 from Dobbin to Magnolia is only a year old and a wide shoulder.
