i have two questions.

1. can you keep your bike in a trainer for days at a time?

2. can you explain anaerobic threshold testing?  i have read you run or ride as hard as possible for 20 mins and take avg hr.  is this correct?

I am totally stoked about 2 things:

1. I'm getting in free to the Shamrock Shuffle.  Sorry I can't share the love.  I would if I could.

2. Double workouts today.  Threw down a swim at about 3pm and then spin class at 5:30pm.  Feeling it!

On the tri-shorts/shirt question, I have a pair of Zoot shorts that I absolutely love.  I think I paid about $45 for them, but that was at a specialty swim shop, so I wouldn't be surprised if they jacked up the prices.

Hi everyone, sorry Ive been slow at responses everything should settle down once back home.  There are some great questions out there.  Ill try but if I miss shoot me a PM.

CT price new is aprox$1600 and they are great tools but as I said earlier if on a budget a power meter is 100% more cost effective. (Im saying this while Im a CT rep).

I love desoto fortenza (think thats the name ill double check) they have 4 pockets that you can throw gels or jelly beans in. They hold up forever and you can catch them onsale alot. I have 6 or 7 pair of them.

Kevin hope the curling event goes well.

Rob how did you pull off a free entry? I only get in (free) when my company donates money. lol  Good luck on the double today
Jason I leave my backup bike on trainer all the time but I release the back tire from the roller, it will flat spot the tire if not.
That is a ballpark way to test your AT when I get back home ill post a more accurate one. With the one your talking of most say to make the workout 30 mins as hard as possible then 10 mins in start your HR and timer over and use the last 20 mins.  I will tell you in advance this sucks if you do it correctly, should about fall over at min 19:59.

DEB that is awsome, now we all have to get deb to the Starting line and then the finish line.

Dave - I am a Bank of America employee, and they just sent out a note letting us know our registration is free.

Thanks for wishing me good luck! I might actually need it. Undecided

Haha - that is so true.  I usually end up on my knees about ready to puke with people on the bike path staring at meYell. I cringe every time I see any type of lactate threshold testing in my workout programs.  It is a really good way to gauge your fitness though.

That was a really good question and did not know about flat spotting the tire.  I would usually haul everything up from the basement and set up/breakdown in my family room - but just last week I decide dto permanently set up in my basement and leave on trainer.  I will have to start releasing the tire.  Thanks

So I have a Compu Trainer question - How does it handle the downhills of a course.  For example the Branson 70.3 was over 6000 ft. climbing with some really steep descents.  I would reach 50 MPH and not pedal at some times for 30-60 seconds.  What does it do to simulate something like that.

And on that same point does a hilly course mess up your power meter average if there are long descents like that since you are not pedaling at all?

My coach would say I shouldn't stop pedaling ever. On the CT, you don't stop peddling, period. Or you stop.  Yes, you must go like hell to keep the power ratings up.  I do not like descents.

You've done a good thing is what you've done!!  I find the hardest part sometimes is actually taking the first step and signing up for it.  Good Job!

Downhill on ct is not quite the same but I do keep pedaling. You tend to run out of gears. Unlike a real downhill your speed willnot stay up. During a im race I hardly ever pedal downhill if above 25mph. You can get about 15+ mins of complete rest while keeping a good speed. Maybe if im going for a kq I might but at my level the rest is much more important than 30seconds of 40mph.

I just wanted to brag and say that I did all three sports back to back to back today.  Did a 1600 yard swim workout, 20 minutes on the stationary bike (that's all it would let me do), and then went right over and did 3 miles on the treadmill.  My legs weren't to bad.  Feeling it in my hamstrings though.  Yeah for me!Laughing

Here is an interesting article about steep uphill treadmill workouts to use as a recovery or low impact workout.  I might have to try this.

Hey folks, long time no see.  I'm finally back among the living.  I've still got a bit of a cough but I'm going to go get a workout in tonight.  I was supposed to LT test my run and swim today but that probably isn't a good idea.  I'll rearrange my schedule a bit but it'll feel good to workout again after almost two weeks.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and "inspires"

Nothing today - work / appointments got in the way.    I have a 5k race tomorrow morning. I'm really curious to see if all the running I have been doing will have any effect on my shorter distance races. (Secretly I am hoping for a PR).

Thanks for the whoo hoo's on the race entry. Thinking about it makes me want to puke lol. I'm having the 'oh gosh, what if i'm last' nightmare.

Wow there are alot of mentor groups. getting hard to find us.

Deb good luck tomorrow and have a great race. Keep us updated.

Nice to see you back Caleb, work your way back slow.

Keith, great full workout today.... you are doing great.  Make sure to stretch if your tight.

I had to take my own advice, started a run today and could barely take a step without major pain (ran on concrete this week) so a 8 mile run turned into a 1.5 mile limp.  Then a 1 hr ice session.  Oh well some antiinflamitory meds will help once I get home.

So not looking forward to heading home, temp here was cold at 64. Back home windchil 7.

Guess I'll have to put the Anti G on my list after CT-haha.  Article says to go to 15% incline on treadmill.  I have to see if my treadmill at home even goes that high.  i know the ones at my gym will.

on a differnt note - if you click on the name of the group in the box I made it takes you right to our forum - no need to go to the forum main screen

The treadmill workout sounds interesting.  I have no idea if ours goes that high.  Will see.  I suppose the concept is the same no matter how high it goes.  Elevate, find the spot between run/walk, go.   Ours is a Vision Fitness.  It has some programed workouts I need to explore someday, too.

I will get to do a CT all-out FTP workout today, not once, but twice for 20 mins each.  I will be spinning like crazy down the downhills to keep the watts high.  I know that you are right - on the IM Moo course, I will be going down hill screaming like a little girl at 40 mph plus without spinning and grateful for the rest to my legs.  The key for me will be doing slow cadence high watt workouts to simulate the uphills so I can stay at about 70% and make good time up them.  I may do a couple of hours on the Real Course Vid tomorrow.  I have to look and see what he has planned.

After the ride, I have to run 45 mins...he wants more fartleks.  After an FTP test - twice.  I just can't get up to do the FTP test alone.  I need someone yelling at me to go hard or someone doing the same test so I can try to stay ahead.  Anybody want to phone and scream at me?  Maybe I need to get Skype

See you soon.  Have a nice day!

i did my first bike workout yesterday with a HR monitor.  i looked at my numbers after i was finished and i was surprised to see my highest HR was 157 and my avg was around 128.  i really expected it to be  much higher.  i was watching a dvd workout and some of their highest rates were 175-180.  i felt like i was pushing myself.  what are some of your max rates and avg rates?
