chapfallen - 2011-12-28 3:44 PM The other useful thing you can do with the cadence sensor is set alerts on the garmin. I found it really useful to set a low point for a few turbo trainer sessions to remind me to keep it above 90. Once I'd done it a few times I found i was sticking with it much more easily, but the beeping was really annoying so i was motivated to make it stop ;-)
I have my garmin mounted on the loop at the end of my aero bars. Not so easy if you have the type with two seperate bars though.
That's a good one! Thanks, I'll use it.
Funny anecdote about the pace sensor function on the Garmin. I set the pace alert prior to my HIM where I "thought" I should be during the run. Well, I got off the bike and the wheels fell off. I had that annoying beep alert go off for basically the entire HM and it drove me nuts as I was cramping up throughout the run. To this day, that beep conjures up some bad memories.

Oh dear.  It really is annoying isn't it?  I have a policy of only using my Garmin during races to record, rather than to pace myself.  I always land up using feel on the day anyway.  But I like looking at the data afterwards and using it to inform my future training.

Ughh. It was adding insult to injury. Mile 1 I seized up as I watched Mirinda Carfree zoom past me to win the event for the ladies and then BEEEP - the Garmin reminded me to HTFU. It was a looong day as that bugger kept going off every 1 minute or so. Never again.

For those of you not familiar with the story of Fran Crippen, he was a temensously wonderful and gifted athlete who grew up in our area and became an elite distance swimmer who died last year tragically during a long distance FINA sanctioned event last year. There is so much blame to go around that it pains me to even describe it here. Google the name and the tragedy is so apparent. That said, my 11 and 8 year old daughters swam a mile in honor today to raise funds for his legacy. I am humbled by their efforts. Peace to all.

Today was our first hill training run today.  We started with 6 hill repeats for this week.  My hill was about 0.17-0.19 miles long (according to the garmin) and about 6.8% avg grade.  Split times were 68, 71, 71, 70, 74, and 71 seconds.  Definitely felt tough after nothing but aerobic running for the last 4 months but it was overall a good workout.  Unfortunately I forgot to change my garmin to running, so if you check out the link to my garmin data in my log don't be suprised to see the speed in mph.  I hate it when that happens.

The day you and Jen come down to sea level or close you will be flying. Really good workout btw.

Hi all,

Trying to get caught up with everyone and get into the swing of things here.

Throwing this out to the group, have a Garmin Forunner 405cx, it is maybe a year old, this is the second time the battery has died and will not recharge.

First time I sent it back and Garmin supposedly fixed it, now it did it again....ahhhhh, anybody have similar experience with their Garmin.

They make you send it back pay for shipping and then you wait.....

Anybody want to buy a cheap Garmin.....

I just got the garmin 310xt for Christmas.  I also got the quick mount kit.

Where is a good place to mount it my bike?  I looked a little online and saw it mounted on the aero bar, but I feel that it may be harder to view.

Any reccomendations?

In between the aero bars.
Use the Garmin quick mount kit and pair it with a profile design adapter - check out REI for the adapter. I have it between the aero bars as well.

I wear mine on my wrist for the bike and the run.

So tonight I go to the gym to do some basic bouldering and climbing since I'm on my mental training break.  I've done a little on the indoor walls, but it's been a long time.  I'm thinking I'll swim afterwards.

I start talking to the other people there (about 4 of us).  One lady, probably around my age, has done a few marathons.  She did the Danskin sprint tri this year and went out and signed up for IMAZ 2012.  Another girl, younger, did the Austin Olympic, her first tri, and went out and signed up for IM Wisconsin 2012.  Her boyfriend has done IMAZ, IMTX and is signed up for IM Wisconsin too.

So here I am, stewing about my first HIM and these people just go out and pull the trigger.  Since my arms were sore after climbing, I decided to wait and swim tomorrow after spin class.

Ernesto, what do I need to do to get ready for Memorial Herman 70.3 in Galveston on Apr 1?  New Orleans is the day I have to go to FL for business, so that won't really work.  I'm going to do the 3M HM at the end of January.  What next? Help mentor!

I've had a totally different experience with Garmin.  They have been tremendously helpful.  They sent me a new 305.  They sent me a new heart rate strap and let me keep the old one.  They sent me a new cadence sensor when mine quit working and they couldn't get it to reset.  I have owned mine since Feb.

harmonjh - 2011-12-26 7:15 PM Swimming Question: Right now, my training has consisted of trying to increase the number of 50s I do in a session. My max right now is 10, but the sets after 6 i'm pretty gassed and feel my RPE is pretty high. I feel this would be more anaerobic training Would there be benefits to taking extra rest between sets (for some swim days) to keep my RPE in the lower end? I've tried to swim slower, but can't seem to.

Yes, increasing rest periods between sets will help avoid exhaustion but if 6X50s are getting you gassed up, you're trying too hard. Slow down and focus on your form.

Thanks for the advice, today i was finally able to slow it down; i slowed my normal 50 time down by 15-20 seconds and focused more on form. I was able to find a groove and left the pool not feeling gassed. It feels good.

Joe,
That's awesome that your kids swam for that.  It's always amazing to hear stories of deaths related to long distance swimming.  When I attempted IMFL in 2007 (DNF during the run), a lady died after exiting the swim course.  Very tragic and bizarre.

Jackie,

The first thing you'll need to do is get your game face on. Ten days in a month is not gonna cut it (like December). The second thing is forget about the Olympic in February in Corpus. 3M is fine but you will have to be consistent during the first three weeks of January and not miss any more workouts, obviously eating and resting properly are basic needs to get ready.

3M is ideal to break two hours for you, unless the weather sucks like it did last year (believe it or not it was incredibly hot for January and windy).

Get your frequency in during January and we'll talk volume after that for February and March.

Sorry to be so blunt! are we still friends? Wink

Of course we're still friends.  I want you to tell me what I need to know and not beat around the bush.  That's why I'm in this group!  Everything you have told me in the last year has been spot on.  ??December was my break month, both physically and mentally.  I'm ready to go in Jan.  I plan to join the Pure Austin Coaching group starting Jan 2. Thanks!

Ernesto and Gang...

I am in need of serious nutritional advice.  The one area Scott is weakest as well so we need all the advice we can get.  For the most part I cook from scratch.  Scott and I eat completely different.  Scott's metabolism requires a high carb diet, where I have tried to remove all white carbs since the 2 week test.  I don't mind preparing different meals for he and the kids but need advice on a few things...  Mainly breakfast.  Scott eats eggs and toast almost every morning (I didn't switch him to whole grain English Muffins).  I've made spinach quiches in the past and kept hard boiled eggs for breakfast but unsure if that is enough to get me going through the am workouts.

I was going to trying to post the nutritional info in my BT log but it looks like I need to have the paid version for the detailed recipes.

What do you all eat?

Samy-  log onto mine and Scott's garmin links..  You will see what hills are? Laughing  Not to mention we live at 6871 ft.   That's about 800-900ft above Colorado Springs proper.  We are on the Air Force Academy, for the gate it is straight uphill to the house!

Very messy run this morning.  Planned on an aerobic easy run after the last 2 days of strength training.  Scott checked the weather and we looked forward to heading out into 52 degrees.

The trail we run was still heavily covered in snow and the beginning so after slipping and sliding in ankle deep snow I turned around after 1/2 mile.  Had to walk several times to keep heart rate low.  Continued on road and turn around just in time to deal with winds up to 20mph.  Had to fight just to stay on two feet!!  Walked a few more times to lower my heart rate than I gave up an ran the last half home as another strength workout.  Check the weather again and it said gust were up to 30 mph and where we are on the hill it's usually a good 10 mph more.  Scott will post his adventure I'm sure.  He opted to stay on the snow covered trail!!

As Jennie mentioned, our easy, aerobic run to recover from yesterday's hill repeat workout was anything but easy.  Temp was good in the low 50s but the wind was howling and 4 miles of my run was spent stomping through 2-3 inches of snow on the trail.  Very slow going due to terrible footing and the wind so I pretty much gave up on staying in my aerobic zone.  5.98 miles in 1:02 at an avg HR of 151.  Tomorrow will be a nice easy cross training day on the ski slopes.

Jen and Scott, I'm officially jealous that you guys get to go skiing.  I worked for a season in Colorado and really miss the snow.  I don't miss trying to run in it though...

Today I had planned a long run.  Unfortunately we went mattress shopping which took up the whole of the day.  I don't mind running in the dark if it's a short run but my preferred long runs go off road and aren't great in the dark.  So I did another bike session and will do my run tomorrow.  On the positive side we're getting our new mattress delivered tomorrow, which is hopefully going to do wonders for my back.

Went for a swim this evening.  The primary goal was to swim at least 1200m because that takes my total for the year over 100,000m.  I was planning to do more, but had gut problems and so did pretty much the minimum needed.  I've hit my target, so I'm really pleased with that.

On the subject of gut problems, does anyone have any tips for dealing with "GI distress"?  I've had a few problems this year on longer events, mostly I think through trying to eat during races.  However I'm pretty sure I can't make it through ironman without eating so I need to teach my stomach to behave.  Any tips?
