I had the most delightful freestyle swim over lunch... OMG, it truly is 90% arms and 10% legs!!!! Without even doing flip turns, my average 100m time was 2.5 mins. I am floating on air, I am SOOOO excited!!
Sounds like a great swim Sharon! Yay!!! The twinibbuns are swimming machines! |

Expert 715 Twin Cities | Subject: RE: They Who Shall not be Named II That we are, led by some incredible swimmers, such as both Pam and Beth, and Dee, of course. Do you know how many years it has taken for me to struggle with freestyle, wondering why I just couldn't get it??? Now I just need to have my shoulders cooperate (but I have my first appointment with the sports therapist on Friday). December challenge, here come the TwisNibbins! |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: They Who Shall not be Named II sparco - 2007-11-13 12:42 PM Heh...I have NO problem 'resting' during the swim. My PR on a sprint distance is 1:53s, then I drop down to a fairly slow pace on the Olympic distance (2:34s). I do tend to really focus on staying relaxed (to the extent of singing and doing math in my head while I swim) and keeping my form for the Olympic distance, but it sure would be nice to do that distance sub 2 open water. I guess the only thing I have to compare it to is my pool swimming, because that was my one and only Olympic distance last summer (my first). I'll keep plugging away, and we'll see what next season brings. Any recommendations on what to concentrate on during the 'off-season' and build would be MORE than appreciated. I plan on jumping up to the half iron distance this June... Work on Biking, on the drainer I guess based on where your at! Being capable of a strong bike means improved MPH/wattage and you can recover faster for a nice run. A good run after a difficult bike is nearly impossible especially as the distances get longer. I like that, "'resting' during the swim", yeah that's it, that's what I'm doing, LOL!

Noone's posted in an hour, that's gotta be some kind of record for this thread. From all the swim talk, looks like I'm gonna be the last one in the pool. Oh wait, I don't have to get in the pool, not a goal. Though I guess if I want to do a tri next year, I should still learn how to swim I have to say, all the talk is getting me a little hyped. Well, gotta join in the rat race at work. Later

It's getting harder to keep up but I did notice talk about swimming, something that we're all slowly getting better at, at least from what I have read. Today is a busy day but I hope to get in a short run this evening or tomorrow morning depending how my left ankle is feeling. Either way i should be hitting the pool tomorrow. Also I forgot to report that my first Tri is in 12 days (San Dimas Turkey Tri, 25NOV). That will have made for a busy month of training and races attended. Ok back to work, check in later. |

I would agree with that, I've really noticed some improvement in the past 6 or so months as I've actually done the drills that are a part of the training plans Agreed drills are very use ful in teaching your body the right muscle memory to help you swim more efficiently... they shouldnt be your WHOLE workout obviously but can make up a fair chunk of it... depending on where your swimming is at and what kind of focus you need....

Especially good if you can go out with a group. I went into my first tri a little over-confident since I come from a swimming background and have spent lots of time in open water. One of the main things I would have done differently would have been to spend time practicing outside of the pool This summer I found an OWS partner and we swam every saturday - it made a big difference, I cut 3 min off my swim in the Cornhusker State Games Sprint from the year before The funny part of that was, when I told my mom - she said something to the effect of 'wow, and you're a year OLDER' LOLOL

I use unscented PAM spray when I wear mine, around the knees/calfs/ankles and little bit around the neck. So much cheaper than bodyglide. Soak it in the tub for 1-2 hours before you put it on, this helps the neoprene be more flexible and less constricting. If you've done swim training with a pull buoy that's how it's going to feel, heaven! Don't be afraid to step out of it like a mad man when you're taking it off as long as your careful not to tear it on something laying around (e.g. stick on the ground) and leave it inside out until after the race. |
