JHagerman - 2008-05-13 11:12 AM Ok, so my foot is still pretty sore. I had a hard time putting my shoe on this morning (it was my first attempt since the surgery). So I have the Relay for Life this Friday and Saturday, then my first Triathlon June 1st. I'm stubborn, so I will do both events, but I'm a bit upset that I'm still down. I know it's early in the year, but I only planned on 2 tri's this year due to my lack of experience and $. I was just getting caught up on my mileage goal for the year, then this.

Jeremy,
Please be careful with this issue.  Having foot issues will result in a gait change for running or even walking.  The change may be pronounced or small but both can, most likely will, lead to other issues, especially in the hips.  Remember, the foot bone is connected to the ankle bone, etc!

IMHO, I would let it heal before attempting anything, especially this weekend.

What is a good race pace for a beginner's first triathlon on the swim?

I've been hitting the pool regularly. My most recent set looks like this:

250 Freestyle
100 Kick
200 Pull
100 Kick
200 Freestyle
50 Backstroke
100 Freestyle

That's 1000 yds, my time is about 40 minutes (includes rest times - so 40 minutes in the pool)

I guess I should figure out my times per lap or what not, but what is a good time per lap or 200 yards???

I don't know what would be "good", but my time for 100yards has dropped to an average of 1:35 over 1200yards. This is broken up into sets consisting of 300, 200's, and 100's, so I did get some rest breaks. When I swam a 1700yard TT, I averaged a 1:43/100. This was with no breaks. Back in September I think I was at 2:00/100. I would love to see my average keep dropping, but I don't know what is possible. I am meeting with a swim coach next week to see if we can tweak anything.

Let us know what your lap times are at and keep us posted on your progress. I know it helps motivate me to see someone else get faster.

You need to a TT test to verify your pace.  The 2 tests used are 3x300 and 1000 continuous.  The idea for the 3x300 to to have the three sets as close as possible in time, IIRC the desired pace is +/- 5 seconds for all three.  I forget the rest interval to use, my book is at home.

Just as for running and biking, there's no good pace for "beginners", some people have it, others don't and have to work hard to see improvements.  My historic (no real effort in training!) 2:00 to 2:15/100 puts me at the 65-80 percentile (BOP) in most races I've done.  I'm done with losing so much time in the swim for Oly's+ and am working on my swimming to improve.

Hey all, Thanks for the info...

Today I met with my 'swim coach' (a friend who swam competitively and happens to also be motivational). She watched me swim for a bit and then started to offer advice. I have the breathing down. I needed to work on my stroke pattern and bring my right arm (side I'm breathing on) more forward, as I was letting it drift outward. I also wasn't kicking well enough, so my lower half (legs) were lower in the water creating more resistance/drag.

So after a bit of instruction she decided to help me figure out my basic pace. We did:

3x100 Freestyle, rest with 50 Backstroke and another 3x100 followed with another rest of 50 Backstroke. Then 200 Freestyle 'nice and easy' - so she says.

My times during all 100 yd sets were 1:42 - 1:53 with my last 2 100's being 1:45 and 1:47. So I'm staying consistent thus far and maintaining a good stroke / breathing pattern.

I feel much better now about my first Tri next weekend! Sprint.

My last part of this long and overly worded post is a question. The water for my sprint will be about 55 degrees. Buying a full tri wetsuit is not in my budget, however Sam's Club has for $30 (on sale). Would this suit be a viable option? I understand that it may not bend in the right places but it may at least keep me warm...

Here is the link to the wetsuit:

Full: http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=330290

Thanks again to you all for your help!!

For the wetsuits, get the full one, you'll need something that covers as much as skin as possible! If you can't extend your arms all the way on the reach don't force it.

That's some cold water there. For a reference, here's a HIM race report for a vet from last weekend that had 55F water, tough swim. All I can say is make sure you thoroughly warmed up before getting into the water.

Jeremy, can you RENT a wetsuit?  That's always a good alternative.

Whatever you use, make sure as Donto says, that you're warmed up.  Make sure you GET IN THE WATER 10-15 min. before your wave and fully submerse, swim 5 minutes or so, and get over that initial shock of cold.  This will also let water seep in your wetsuit for your body to warm-up and insulate you from the cold when your wave starts.

I swam a HIM last year in 51F water (in full suit).  The anticipation and initial shock were the worst part.  Once my wave started, it didn't really bother me.  In fact, that kind of cold water lets you rip the swim without any chance of overheating.

Good luck!

Jeremy,

I would definately buy or rent a wetsuit.

The water temp. in my 1st tri last year was low 60's and that about froze me to death.
Currently the water temp. is low 50's I couldn't imagine swimming in it without a wetsuit. I waded in up to my thighs and lasted only a couple of minutes.

And to give myself a pat on the back. I've run 280 miles so far this year whichtops my last year's total. Plus I've swam 110,000 yards compared to last year's 80,000 total.

Still super-slow in the pool. I was making good progress until I got assigned a rig 73 miles from the closest indoor pool.

Great job on the running and swimming!

I am looking into wetsuits, but I found that I've procrastinated too long. I have a half suit that is not a Tri specific suit. I'll use that if all else fails. A few people here have already met at the water and said that the temp really doesn't feel too bad. The last update that I heard was 61 degrees.

I'll get in and swim for a few minutes before my start. Keep my fingers crossed!

Just got massaged today. Everybody in the mentor group needs to get a massage. It definately helps with the recovery.

Have a great weekend. I'm a week away from my first Oly.

I set a 5k pr 2 years ago and a 10k pr last year riding my tri-bike to the events, it definitely works!

Way to go Jeremy, congrats on finishing you first race!! You're hooked now. When's the next one?

Yesterday, my buddy Jason and I "bricked" the bike and run portion of the Showdown at Sundown race that we are both competing in next weekend. (400y swim, 9 mile bike, 3 mile run) He is faster than I am, so he gave me a 5 minute head start and said "don't let me catch you". I saw him for the first time just after the bike turnaround and thought for-sure he was going to catch me before T2. Turns out he ended up catching me just after the run turnaround with about 1 mile to go. He ended up finishing 1 minute ahead of me, so he beat me by 6 minutes. I don't think this is too bad. Now I need to find 6 minutes before next weekend's race. This was a good way to do the brick because it pushed us both. We both went out hard just as if it was a race. See my traing log for all the numbers.

Congrats again to everybody,

Scott
