Everyone feel like training today?

More running on tap here, unless someone wants to volunteer and do it for me?

Ok, I did and even did a tiny brick (forgot to wear the correct apparel for running -- can't stand the bounce).

Got a swim in this AM, now it's off to one of those wonderful 3-4 hour meetings at ****.  Spin therapy will get me back in business tonight, though.

Happy training, Ringers.  Make 4/9/08 better than 4/8/08.

Is any one racing this weekend? I have my first race on Sunday (sprint). A bit nervous. I am using this as a mini-dress rehearsal for the big race in May (first HIM ever) which I am very, very nervous about. That is why I decided to join a Challenge group...to keep me on track for training. But today I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. I keep telling myself that preparing for a HIM is not like cramming for an exam. I am not trying to cram all my training in this month…but I can’t help but feel that I am. And feeling overwhelmed is not helping. I am questioning if I am ready for this race…I could finish it but would I be happy with the time? Does any one else get these feelings before a big race? How do you deal with them?

Heh... my first HIM isn't for another 360 days 18 hours 30 minutes, and I'm already nervous.

Is this a "peak" month for your training?  Whenever my plan ramps up a bit, I always get a little overwhelmed, too.  I have to remind myself that the race isn't the test.  The race is the reward.  It's the training that is hard.  It's the training that tests you.  The exams so to speak.  Race day is graduation, when you finally get to reap the benefits of all the hard work you did.  Afterall, there isn't much on race day you can do about your time, but there is something you can do today about your time.  Suffer today to you can smile for the camera on race day.

Oh, and as for racing.... I've got TWO events.

First, I'm doing my first century ride.  That's the plan anyway.  Of course, it's not really a race, but it will be a challenge.  Then, I'm doing a 5k that same evening.  It is a race, but I don't think I'll be setting a PR or anything after biking 100 miles.  I figure I'll just do my best to reach the water stops and chill with the volunteers for a while.

Im guessing with your A race in May you are at the end of your final build period... at this point you will be tired and overwhelmed, dont worry its perfectly normal... just stick to the plan you will get through.

Given this is your first attempt at this distance your goals might want to look something like this: 1. Start the Race 2. Have Fun 3. Finish the Race

If you want to set a time goal you need to be realistic - how long are you taking to do your LSD training and workout a conservative guess at when you would like to finish (i.e between 7-8 hours) but to be honest... for your first.... just finishing will be HUGE!

In terms of how you are feeling... a little nerves are normal... and perfectly normal. How you deal with them is very personal - you might need a time out and spend a rest day relaxing and pampering yourslef (massage, pedicure, whatever works). You may find it useful to talk to people who have done the same HIM and find out about the race, or you may find that planning everything yuo need for the race calms you down.

(I should * this as I have never done a HIM - due to plans being thwarted on multipl occassions with illness and injury - I have been through the experience as a sounding board and support for others)

Good luck this weekend!

You're ready. Your challenge team has decreed it.

Same here, but there's a festival in town tomorrow night with free beer, free food, free music, and really expensive art.  So, I've got something to take the edge off the grind.  Well, that and a forty minute run in the morning.

At this festival (Arts, Eats, and Beats) last year, I found an AWESOME painting of the St. Charles Trolley in New Orleans.  I had my checkbook ready, then I was quoted $1400.

Ummm... thanks, I'm gonna keep looking.  Lets just say for that amount of money, it should have come with an Ultegra rear derailleur and carbon stays.

heh... When I was shopping for the engagement ring, the sales lady was showing me a rock and a setting that I thought looked pretty good.  So, she worked it up and came back with a price.  I saw it, it shocked me, and I said, "does it come in Felt or Cervelo?"

I thought it was hilarious.  She just sorta blankly stared at me like, "whaaaaaat?"
