sigepbrad - 2009-04-14 11:14 PMHope everybody enjoyed their Easter Weekend. I know I did. did a 50 miler on the bike on Saturday. Just got back from a 10.8 mile run tonight. I'm starting to develop a bit of a knee issue. I'm getting pain on the outside of my left knee on my long runs. first time it happened toward the end of an 11 miler. tonight the pain started around mile 5 or so. A little poking around on BT makes me think it might be IT band, but I don't have the slightest idea what I'm talking about. Could be sars for all I know.
Good news is my good friend is a physical therapist, and he's married to an Iron Woman. She's also a PT. They should be able to help me.
Been pretty quite lately. Hope everyone is doing well.

Hey gang, greetings from China.  I have about 2 minutes here in the hotel lobby, just wanted to let you know I'm going to be a real spook for the next couple of weeks.  I'll log in while I can, but this is going to be a busy trip.....

Brad, sorry to hear about your knee.  Definitely sounds like it could be IT band.....lots of ice and get yourself a foam roller ASAP.  I struggle with this too and will get back with some other thoughts when I can.

Hey everyone hope your doing well, Brad - sorry about your knee, maybe some rest will make it feel better!  I've been trying to kick up my training a little.  I'm only training sprint/olympic distance but I've been hitting the track for some 400's and speed work/strides ,etc and man is it tough!  I've been on the treadmill all winter (Albany NY =snow every day) and my lungs were burning outside! Anyway, I'm still swimming in the pool and hopefully getting a bike really soon.  I've been spinning all winter.  Hope everyone is well.  and can anyone send me some of the Total Immersion stuff?  I know Brad I think you said you have it, not sure, if not no biggie, just hoping I could get a taste of what its all about.  Thanks and keep rockin it!

JM:  As you know I'm no expert and I apologize if I offend you w/ this but I only mean to help.

I read your above and went to your logs.  Do you have a running coach?  If not then from what I see in your logs I think you need to throttle back on the track work if you do any at all.  Especially when I see this in you logs for the past Monday

800m warmup jog
6x400m pieces at 3k pace
Very tiring!

800 is not a warm up.  A mile + is more like it.  No stretching after the warm up???  A 3k pace!!!!  No cool down??

This is a recipe for injury...again IMHO!    Your mileage logged for this year is 61 or ~17 a month.  I really think you need to build a much more significant base before you do any more track work.

Let me know what you think.

Feels fine right now, but I haven't ran since tuesday. Headed to the PT right now. I'll let you know how it goes.
Also, I've got big news. It's 140.6 miles worth of news actually. Madison 2010, here I come. The wife gave me permission yesterday. Were headed there this year to volunteer and sign up. This is officially a lifestyle, and not a phase.

45 pounds? Have you lost all of that since you've started your current training? Wow, that's impressive. That's got to feel good.

OUTSTANDING!!!  I had to cancel the IMLP plans for next year because she got knocked up...wait till I find that guy.  So it looks like Cozumel or Florida.  Yep, I skipped out of work yesterday to go run....lifestyle!

Ni hao everyone!  Finally getting a "rest day" over here.  Was up at 5:30 and got a nice hour run in.  Not sure how far it was, but it felt great!

Don't know the whole story JM, but have to agree with John's comments above.  Jumping right into speedwork without a solid run base and little/no warm-up is risky.  That said, I recall that you play ultimate frisbee and such, so maybe you are getting more running in that your logs truly show.  That said, for an oly racer, you ought to be running 4-ish times per week for a total of 20-ish miles per week total.  The strides and fartlek efforts will definitely help you, just be sure to ease into this and make sure you aren't doing it more than once every week to 10 days.

Also, think I've mentioned it before, but if you can't get your hands on the DVD, the free stuff on the TI website will give you a very clear picture of what it is all about.  I often go back when I feel my form is suffering for a reminder of what the stroke is supposed to look like!

Sweet!!  So next year I'll be mentoring a group if IM athletes??    Barring any surprises/injuries/etc., I'm planning on IMC next year and am already geeked about it.  Ironman China is this weekend.  Was going to try do fly down and check it out and/or volunteer, but just couldn't swing it schedule-wise.....

What did the PT say Brad?

You making a push for Kona? I hear China offers the best shot at qualifying. I picture a bucnh of people wearing respirators on the run.

PT visit went well. He took a look and watched me run. Turns out my isn't strong enough. I'm pretty sure there was a more scientific reason given, but all I heard was your isn't strong enough. So, I've got a bunch of stretches for after runs, and a few glut strengthening routines to do everyday.

So my first outdoor race is this friday. It's a 750 yard swim 4km run in Tempe. I'm going to wear my wetsuit if for no other reason than practice. Since there is no chance of an OWS in Michigan, I'm going to try it in the pool. I'm not too excited about all the funny looks at the Y, but Oh, well. I need practice swiming in and taking off the wetsuit.

Well that didn't go too bad, I guess. The guy nextg to me knew what I was doing, but the rest of the people looked at me like I was special. But holy eff was that thing fast. I did 200 yards with the wetsuit and 200 yards w/o, and with the WS I was 30 seconds faster! Getting out of it didn't go too bad either. I think I'm ready!

Bring it! I will need some motivation for the next 508 days.
I'm off to Phoenix tomorrow night for a wedding, and my first outdoor crack at this. I've been sick for the last few days, so I'm hoping I'm better by Friday.

Hah! I think the only chance I have at Kona is a lottery spot.  I'd need to shave a good 2+ hours off my IMCDA time......Just don't think I'm swimming in the right gene pool for that.....

From what I've read, Ironman China was absolutely brutal.  It was up to 113F on the run and even the pros were walking.  I heard that there were only a handful of Age Groupers that actually finished.  Don't know the actual DNF rate, but it was VERY high.....

Not sure about Hainan Island (where the race was), but the pollution here is absolutely obscene.  I'm running early when the air is at least somewhat tolerable, but am feeling it for sure by the end of a 5 mile run....disgusting.  I'm hoping this will work like altitude training and will be totally kick-a** when I get back to the clean, clear air!!

I, too, suffer from imbalances in my hips.  Very common for us one-dimensional (forward) athletes.  Get religion on those stretches/strengthening, they WILL help.

Another thought:  How is your bike fit?  This can certainly aggrevate your ITB.

It is totally personal, but I think part of the IM experience is starting the swim at the same time as your other 1999 best friends.  I stopped briefly about 200 yards in to the start at CDA to have a look around, absolutely amazing!!

The TT start is definitely less intimidating though.  Not sure how long folks were waiting to go off, I think it all depends on how early you get in line.  I'm sure there are many RR's out there though that would help answer this one.

Well, my race went pretty well. No major problems to speak of, and I had a blast. My run was a little slower than I expected. It was only 4k, and I only held an 8:00 pace or so.  Here are some race pictures.

Did a long run the next day, and ran up a mountain in the middle of the run. Got a little dehydrated, but felt good otherwise.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. I'm back to normal and not sick anymore, so it's back to the training plan for me.
