And I am not going to read his old credit card statements, despite the fact that it is interesting to see how other people choose to spend their money.

mchally - 2009-01-02 1:01 AM hmm, I never realized that masters/phd students are financially supported by the Universities...they gave him awesome health insurance.

Yeah. Other than making peanuts, life as a grad student was awesome. I got a paycheck (more money than I make now, so basically peanuts +) and killer health insurance. Generally you have to do something for the paycheck, like teaching or research, but it's usually great stuff you'd want to do anyway that augments your learning.

What did you study/focus on?  Did you say that you were in English, literature, or something of that sort?

Well, since you're a captive audience ...

I did my undergrad in biochem and was applying to med schools when I had a life change and realized how badly I wanted to study literature. So on nothing more than a wing and a prayer (and some excellent recommendations from English teachers who'd had me) I applied to grad schools for English and comparative literature.

I went into the Ph.D. program at U.S.C. for comparative literature--like English, but you study in (at least) three different languages. Mine were English, Indonesian and German.

It was awesome. I got full tuition funding plus a teaching job and eventually became an administrator as well. Unfortunately I got very disillusioned with academia and dropped out a year after my master's.

sooo...I am a bit snoopy.  I was flipping through various travel documents from his tri's last season.  Embarassed

He travels quite a bit.   Or is just that I rarely travel at all?

Hi Miss Kitty Cat!!!

I've often found it useful just to BE on a training plan for smart/structured training even if I didn't finish them

I'm a little sad, actually, that I'm not following a BT Iron plan, so I won't see those wonderful little green lines kissing the tops of the bars of my graph

But I will get to see really cool, proportionally appropriate stripes on my significant bars as my training builds up

Oh I LOVE the graph stripes....although mine have NO purple or yellow at the moment...is that bad with a race 4 weeks away? (hmmm dont tell Judi...she will be on my case)

Of course, it was so short you can't actually SEE the purple, but it's there

Good kick start thats for sure...I find I have two main problems...

1) I keep changing my goals mid stream (part of  my NY resolutions when I finally write them)

2) Hard to do when others want to train with you from time to time

Never you mind, Miss Kitty Cat, you know you've got a good base and you'll survive the race just fine. You'll have great fun which is the whole point!

I'm very excited you are doing another race!

Im more excited about all the other girls doing it!!!

Me - just have to NOT run around and exhaust myself watching everyone in the 3 earlier races AND...  not get heatstroke...it was 40 degrees(well over 100F) and VERY humid last time...start time of 11am in the middle of summer is kind of ridiculous!

Then 2009 becomes the year of the base...esp on the bike...Ive been re-reading 'Going Long' but I think I need to see what else is out there to read as I dont really know what Im doing and could use some pointers to get started!

Yes, you are both so very talented and also lucky to be shepherding those girls through this tri!

Going Long is very Ironman focused, although it's a good read. For what your goals are and what you want to do, I'd suggest The Perfect Distance by Tom Rodgers. It addresses half-Iron training, but takes a good long-term view on it, and a little different take. I think you would really like it.

I printed out the half ironman prep, 16 w oly 2x balanced, 16 w oly run focused, 16 w oly Swim focused.

I will look over them-I hate trying to read documents on a computer screen.

I sooo *get* that...now I have a laptop I really shouldinvest in a printer...and maybe a desk...

And I take drugs to suppress it so I don't go insane.  It is not fun to interact with people when you are not sure whether the last conversation you had with them really happened.  Especially when you are trying to survive High School.
