Have developed a slight pain in my legs, right on the shins. I hope that I am not getting splints---it started after running a 5K the other day, with a very long down hill section. Suppose to run another 5k tonight but am thinking of backing off a little. Suggestions on curing the pain quickly? Make sure you are streching the calves out real good and warming up before you run. I find that after 10 min stretch w/ light body wieght exercises ie. jumping jacks or whatever the legs don't take as long to get loose. But the stretching is key. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Thanks for the advice on running with sore shins-decided to run anyway-just couldn't stay away (you know the feeling) I took it real easy for the first mile then cranked it up and felt great. A little sore afterwards but the hot tub helped--rise above!! Also, not sure why my bike graph is not showing up--need some more guidance in this area of posting. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED Hey guys. I noticed a few of you recently got Garmins. Here are a couple of features I like, and you should figure out how to use, if you want. Those who also have some features they like can chime in as well. 1. Auto lap feature. You can set it to lap at every mile or whatever interval you like. Very handy. 2. Auto pause. Good for running, awesome for biking. 3. Set up the lap button for multi events, including transitions. So I set it up that I start it when I start the bike, hit the lap coming into transition, hit the lap again coming out of transition and stop it after the run. No need to change functions. 4. You can also upload maps, but I haven't gotten that far yet. 5. You can set up your HR zones so it beeps when you are going too fast or slow. Overall, especially for the price you can get them for, I highly recommend one. |

Good karma is coming your way. Is everyone so tired from working out and completing the IM Challenge? Well, I actually went in the pool today. I figured out that it's not the time or work outs I missed that gets me frustrated when I am sick or injured, it's the loss of fitness. I feel like it takes me half as long to get back to where I was when I stopped. I hope everyone has a good week. So It wasnt just me.. I was holding my breath when I logged into today because I was sure I would have a message or inquiring as to if I had dropped off the face of the planet. So Thank you Seren and Scogz, I am back in action. Had a wonderful swim at Masters Class that really seems to set me on a good path through the weekend. Missed last 2 weeks because of work commitment and someone rolling over and leaving tons of mulch on 128. another (well the first one on a while) bike, a run, and another swim and 5 mile run on Saturday. is the plan for the rest of the week. I have to get myself back in sych withmy original traing plan. Hope everything is well for everyone on another note, did MA people hear anything about the Mud Run up in Amesbury? My Fiance and I were planning to do it then other events came up but I would love to do a similar race sometime. |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED I was wondering how everyone balances training when you get sick. I'm pretty sure I have bronchitis, and so I'm heading into the doc. It's very upsetting to lose almost a week of training. How do you know when to HTFU, and when to take it easy? |

I think the old guideline of symptoms below the neck need a few days off-stuff like bronchitis, GI issues, and I put a fever there too. Symptoms in the head-run of the mill cold type stuff can often be trained through but at a lower intensity level. Of course it really depends on the situation and how tired/knocked out the athlete is. Hard training suppresses your immune response and that is not what you need when you are trying to fight an infection. Just my 2 cents worth.... |

New user 21 Syracuse | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Group, Season 2 - CLOSED So, I have signed up for a 12 week course for beginners at the YMCA. I also have decided I'm going to try to do the Live Strong Tri on June 19th. I had signed up for it in January but, wasn't going to race. The coach has convinced me to just use it as a stepping stone. If I don't freeze in the water, I will keep you all posted! I just ran for the first time in a very long time so I may be doing a great deal of walking. My hip doesn't want to allow the running still. I guess I may have to be okay with that but I am still going to push myself to try to run more. I am getting into training more this week but, I seem to spend more time trying to figure out how to input my workout than I actually do working out!! :-) The weather is finally cooperating here so, that must mean it's nicer everywhere else! Have fun training everyone Shioban |

Doing much better, after second trip to Doc re-x-rayed and no broke rib, But the intercostal muscles are for sure bad strain or slight tear. So the treatment is still the same Motrin and rest, but not as bad as it could have been which is good because I'm ready to start back to training. I had to wait a little longer because an infection started but dealt with quickly with antibiodics. I think my plan will be to hit it slow starting Sunday and see how the breathing goes. This gives me a couple more days to put my bike back together as it is in pieces from giving it a good tuneup/chain. I found a decent website that shows videos of how to several maintence things to your bike ect. http://bicycletutor.com/ lots of short videos. I hope everybody is training well and have a good day. |

I've been injured, not so much sick, at various times over the past two years. What i've found to be great to do when you can't train hard is yoga. It might be okay for you to do even with bronchitis, as long as it's not too bad. I only wish i had time to do it more now. You can do as much or as little as you feel you can handle. |

Happy to hear it's not as bad as it could have been. Another GREAT use of down time. There are so many things we need to do other than swim, bike and run. We have to look at any of these downtimes as opportunities to work on core/stability, get familiar with our equipment, research new equipment, find races, review our training plans, read books, RECOVER. And then post what we've found for our friends Hang in there |
