Veteran 274 | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Cranked out my mile swim in 35 minutes ... I don't do flip turns and was not going for speed but felt good throughout and definately could have kep t going but I wanted to try to do a quick transition into a run ... Got changed fairly quickly into my tights and winter running gear and as soon as I got outside it was like hitting a wall - the wind was blowing hard through the park and it ripped right through me. My plan of a nice 6-7 miler at a 10 minute mile pace went out the window as I took off to try to get warm. Ran 2 1/2 miles before I said to hell with it and ran back to my car ... only positive was that my pace hovered at 8:10 and I had an ice cold Zico waiting for me in the front seat. Props off to you guys that can run when it is frigid out - my 10 mile run yesterday was 8 degrees warmer and windless - the wind today just froze me to my core - maybe would not have if I hadn't swam first but who knows. Weather report says 14 degrees warmer tomorrow - have a 6 miler planned and an upper body workout. 53 days until my first half marathon, and my first race of the season ... the EXCITEMENT builds!

Veteran 274 | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed rsmoylan - 2012-01-29 10:26 PM I like the kinvara's as a racing shoe. They remind me of racing flats back in high school. I wear a pretty stable Asics running shoe for everyday use. I've read quite a bit on the boards here, and many people have gone minamilist with good results, and some have gotten injured. Most will agree that one should break into it slowly. All slow low mileage with them, and maybe even phase them in. As with most things, if you listen to your body you should be okay.
I only use my kinvara's to race in - when I run trails I wear Montrail Rockridge (next season I will switch to Montrail Masochists) ... and I train in Nike Lunarhaze ... used to run in Pegasus but I like the Lunarhaze better ... I honestly think I am too big to subject my feet to daily training on a minimalist style shoe. |

I'll be on business travel most of the next few weeks. That means hotel gym bikes, treadmills and very short pools. Any advice from the business travelers would be greatly appreciated. Yesterday had my long pool day. 2000y total. 500wu, 10x100 sets and 500 cd. Have a great week.
This might help with the swimming at least: ?www.swimmersguide.com . You can find pools just about anywhere. Good luck. Training is always difficult when you're travelling. |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Good morning gang. Sorry I missed yesterday. The day got away from me. I'm excited to see the consistency with everyone and the motivation staying high. I had a 3 hour trainer ride on Sunday. Exhilarating to go that long. I had a good pool swim this morning and back on the trainer tonight. What does everyone else have planned? |

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Had a great swim last night ... finally managed to breathe bilaterally for any significant amount of time. I still resorted to every 2 when I had to push it, but I went 200yds breathing first every 5 and then every 3. I'll swim again tonight. No bike yesterday and no run this morning. Trying to stay well rested and keep a head cold at bay that seems to be knocking at the door. I figure two sacrificed morning workouts now might be worth the projected loss later if this thing takes root. But I'll still swim tonight. I'm not giving that up ... enjoying it far too much now. I've been taking Echinacea which always seems to help me. People are dropping from work and at home all around me ... so far so good for me. |

Extreme Veteran 356 Albany/Saratoga, NY area | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed I swam last night and am running tonight. I'm getting faster and have more energy since I cleaned up my diet and that keeps me motivated. Also, anytime I get new shoes I'm excited to go out and run in them for a couple of weeks. I feel like a kid getting so excited over my shoes. When I was a kid I used to think new shoes would make me run faster-if only that were true...

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Accountability. I don't know how many of you are using the logs here on BT, but I'm finding them to be a great motivator. I like inputting my data after a workout and I like seeing the colored bar graphs grow each week. Today ... on the final day of the month, I notice how badly that run slump impacted my totals. My swim totals improved, so that's exciting ... but seeing the other two totals drop is a bit of a kick in the pants right now. I only ran 82 miles this month. Ugh. Another month starts tomorrow. Onward! |

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Thanks Nicole! I think Feb totals will most certainly improve from January's. Who is up for a February training challenge of some sort? Not a "who puts in the most" sort of thing ... but who increases by the best percentage of their January totals? Hit a new milestone for the pool tonight. Swam 2600 in an hour. A new distance record. |

Jorge's plan is ending in about 2 weeks, then I am hitting the street. Along with your idea we could have a prize of some sort for least amount of missed workouts. Just a thought. Who's in team? |

Veteran 242 Brunswick, Georgia | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed What up, posse!!! It sounds like everyone has been hitting the old training grind! I made it a goal over the weekend to not sit in front of the computer. Sometimes you need to shut it down. I did stick to my plan. Saturda, I did a 20 ride 20 swim and 20 run. It was a fun workout but showed me I still have more work to do. I took Sunday off which I am trying to keep consistent. We had warm weather yesterday and today so I did some outside workouts and postponed the pool until tomorrow while it rains. I hit the bike yesterday and rode 15 miles. I started slow the first few weeks of the month. I was averaging 13-14 mp. I was out of shape and hadn't touched my bike since Thanksgiving. I averaged just over 15mph yesterday so i was happy to see that go up. I went for a run today and tried to add some endurance. I wanted to go 3.25 miles. I was watching my time close and had to give a little extra push in the last quarter mile. The run took me 29.48 which puts me at a 9.04 mile!! That is down about 25 seconds from my last few runs so that is exciting. There is nothing better than seeing progress in my workouts!!! It is so rewarding to see results. I keep reading every week about you all setting personal bests and it makes me want to go out and do the same. I have been using the logs and I like to see the changes. I'm in for a challenge. I need to keep better track of distances/times. I had some days where I ran or biked a certain amount of time but didn't note the distance. 54 days till I cross the finish line!! |

Member 145 Lake Forest, CA | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Hey all, It’s been a couple of busy days on the road but did manage to get a 30 min run/walk on the hotel treadmill yesterday and an hour on the gym bike today. I also checked out the indoor pool at the hotel and found that it’s about 12 yards across (about half the distance of my normal pool) so I plan to do a 40 min swim in it tomorrow. I love the trainings logs and recording my progress. It’s been a real motivator. Looking at the calendar view I realize that I only missed two day in my first month of training. That in itself is a huge PR. Now that my calf is feeling better I think February will be a big month for my running and plan on increasing both my speed and distance significantly. So bring on a challenge. Let’s all make February a great training month. C |

Extreme Veteran 356 Albany/Saratoga, NY area | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Congratulations Nicole. It sounds like you are breaking through your plateau. That's great. Thanks! Now when I run it actually feels like I'm running I'm in for a challange but I'll probably lose as I'm taking a full week off from training this month for a trip to Nicaragua. I won't have access to a pool, bike or treadmill and won't be allowed to leave the group I'm travelling with to go for a run. I have the feeling I'll get plenty of exercise, though, as I'm told we'll be working hard. |

Great job with the pace, Ashley ... and for keeping it real on the road, Craig! I'll get the ball rolling by listing my January totals and my February goals:

75 | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Not kept totals for January, but will definately start for February. Being trying different things in training, it is very cold in the UK at the moment, so have been going to the gym and doing 15k on the exercise bike and then going outside for a 2 mile run. Not huge distances, but I wanted to get the feel how what it would be like to go running immediately after cycling!! Legs like jelly for first couple of strides but then felt fine - am going to slowly start increasing bike ride and run. Really glad I signed up to compete a sprint as it is giving me the motivation to doing some exercise during this cold snap we are having!! Keep up the good work Gareth |

Veteran 242 Brunswick, Georgia | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Evening, training machines!!! Here are my January totals. I didn't keep the best records the first few weeks but got better as the month went on. I started using GPS for my biking and running and that helped. S: 4800.00 Yd - 4h 04m By the way, are any of you familiar with an app called Map My Ride? It is awesome. You can record all kinds of workouts, keep track of nutrition, view routes, etc. I went to the pool today and did a PB of 1100 yards. I did my race distance (400yds) right at 9:04. I was happy with that. I never went as hard as I could. I did a pace I thought I could keep. I rested for 1 minute 1/2 way through. That is still a big improvement over a few weeks ago. The next 400 yards took me just over 10 minutes. The last 3 hundred took about 10 minutes as I was about warn out. Weather permitting tomorrow, I am going to try and do a 20 mile ride and keep my 15mph+ average. I'm interested in the challenge. I will stick with taking Sundays off. I will have a big challenge the second week of February. Heading down to FLA for a week for a sister-n-law shower. Distractions and things going on will be a challenge. Train on! Ya'll are in for a whoopin!

Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Up and at 'em peeps!! Great work in the pool Ashley! It's always great to cover the distance you'll need to cover in the race. Before I had my Garmin, I used Map My Run all the time. I'll still use it if I feel like I want to create a new route and know the mileage ahead of time ... but I like that the Garmin allows me to just go out and wander through the streets and then get a read on my mileage later. |

Master 1793 Essex Jct, VT | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Everyone's progress is amazing. Take in the fact of what you are doing. Inspiring. I had a short run last night at an easy pace. The last 3/4 of a mile I did strides. 30 sec on + 30 sec jog. That felt good stretch out the legs a bit, and no pain still. Prepping for a run focused block in a few weeks. Train on. Master 1460 Burlington, Vermont | Subject: RE: Scott's Mentor Group-Closed Where is everyone today? Finished up a big training day in the pool tonight by hitting a couple of new milestones. Biggest yardage in one workout (2750 in 65 minutes) and longest distance covered without rest (500 yds ... twice!). The second milestone came as the final set: 10 x 25 sprints with :15 rest right into the 500yd non-stop. Repeat after a minute rest. I should sleep well tonight.
