Train smart everyone!

I wish you'd have said walk smart.

After a great run on the ankle today, I slipped on a set of wet stairs leading into my office ... the bad ankle taking another twist. Thankfully, we had an instant cold pack and an ace bandage in the first aid kit ... and I have ibuprofen in my work bag. But man ... I think I just set myself back another 3 or 4 days.

Looks like this is going to be a steep taper that relies on the pool and bike to keep me active prior to the race.

Oh man!  We are going to have to put you in a bubble.  Take it easy, and you never know, this amount of rest might do wonders for your mary.

Ugh, Troy. Try not to do anything until your race. Maybe you should wrap yourself in bubble wrap!

Feeling slightly better today-maybe a sore throat cominig on but hopefully won't turn into anything. I heading to the pool tonight for 1000 yds. tomorrow I'm going to make up my bike and also probably do my scheduled run.

Hope everyone has a good day!!

Hey Everyone,

I havent checked in for a bit. The pain I mentioned previously in my foot got worse, and there was associated swelling just below and forward of the medial aspect of the ankle. I went to the sports doc. He diagnosed posterior tibial tendonitis and said there is some longitudinal tears, but luckily no complete tears. He said that I need orthotics and this should prevent any future issues. I had just finished registering me and my wife for a 1/2 marathon 2 days before it started to hurt. We lost that money . M.D said no running until follow up appointment the end of this month. The 1/2 was on June 2. Doc said if I ran the 1/2 I would jeapordize the rest of my season. Luckily I can still swim and bike and since these are my weaknesses I guess in some ways this is a good thing. I will keep checking in. I am making slow, but steady progress in the pool. Take care all!!

So I actually got on the trainer this morning. First time on the bike in weeks. Go me.

Nothing structured ... just wanted to keep this ankle moving and raise the heart rate for 45 minutes. I bought some Arnica gel last night which was suggested by a friend to decrease the swelling. It's still sore after yesterday's stupid stair climbing, but I remain hopeful that it'll be fine in another day or two. I'll probably keep to the bike tomorrow and will see what Sunday brings. I don't anticipate getting in my 16 miler this weekend.

Morning tri junkies!

Day 5 of my groin watch. It is feeling a whole lot better. I still feel a little soreness and more so when walking downhill. I probably made the right decision not to race tomorrow but I am second guessing myself a little.

I am going to shoot for my next race on 5/25 or 6/10. It makes sense to register early and save money but then things can happen. I might adopt a new philosphy and pay a little more and register the last day possible. Thats what I was going to do this week. I got hurt Sunday and never registered- lost no money. I will look at as the extra amount being an 'insurance policy'. My wife will be giving birth at some point over the next 100 days so I can't guarantee I'll make anything except a trip to the hospital!

I went to the pool last night and got in my 2000yds. I still rest at 1000 for 2 minutes. The 2:00 minute intervals I am doing is a good challenge. I can definitely see improvement in my endurance. I've steered away from speed workouts but I know those are still necessary. The fact that I am swimming two miles a week is mind blowing sometimes! I never would have imagined I would be doing that.

I might take it easy the next two days and get back full steam on Monday. I will go for a walk over the weekend or maybe an easy bike ride with my son.

What you got?? What are everyone's weekend training plans?

I'm sure you can meet her there after the race. Just tell her HTFU.

Hmmm. I hope I got the sarc font right.

The result gave me a great deal of good information, most importantly the % breakdown of protein/carbs/fats over the course of a day. I wanted to target 45/35/20%.

Andy-I was so busy yesterday I didn't get the chance to read this carefully. I'm just curious. Why did you choose these percentages? Is it just what works for you or is it reccommended for everyone or all athletes?

LaughingLaughingLaughingLaughingLaughingLaughing  Now that's funny.

Busy tonight with the son's soccer game and baseball practice.  Another baseball game first thing in the morning.  Will get to the pool after that.  Then mountain bike ride Sunday.

P.s. Maybe we should change the name of the group to "Scott's home for the lame and infirmed"? Wink

Have a great weekend.  Train and recover safely.

Tongue out Good one, Ashley! Maybe we should be "Scott's One-Liner's"

I made up the bike I missed earlier this week and got a 2 mile run in. I took it easy on both as I am still feeling a bit run down-although, not starving anymore. Maybe I'm coming down with something. I have a longer bike with some climbing and yoga tomorrow and a 4 mile run for Sunday.

Hope everyone has a safe and injury free weekend!!!

So I've finally got an outdoor ride scheduled for tomorrow morning (Tom, my running partner you met, Scott, is also my biking partner). Which means I needed to change out that trainer tire. I got a great price on the last pair of Mich Pro 3s at the LBS ... and they're blue to match my steed.

And I got a behind the seat mount double water bottle holder as well ... and blue water bottles. The bike is looking sweet. I'll try and get a picture tomorrow in my new Team Schlitz jersey.

But now I'm a bit stuck ... I'm not going to put these tires on the trainer, but I'd really love to keep doing intervals with TrainerRoad this summer. I may have to save my pennies for a new rear wheel so I can just use my current wheel as a trainer wheel. We'll see. For now, it's outdoor rides or nothing at all (not that I've been riding all that much anyway).

Happy training and recovering.  We all go through stages - just keep going.

Sprint Tri race this weekend - New England season opener.  I entered as a Clydesdale (even thought I lost 15 pounds) as I am 225 on the button and 45 years old.

Did an easy run of 3 miles today and only 700 yards in the pool.  Did an easy 100 warm up and then did the 400 medium and felt they was more in the tank with a good time.

Ok - an inspirational leader told me to write down my goals.  It was simple 8 weeks ago - get in shape and do a sprint tri!!!

Goal times are a little aggressive for my first race but here they are:

Swim - 7: minutes  (400 yards - lake mandatory wetsuit)

Bike - 32:00 (10 miles)

Run - 24 minutes (5k)

plus transitions so hope to do 1:05:45 with transitions

ok - there it is all written out.

Sunday morning with all the mothers.

Happy Mothers Day to all Mothers.

If don't get eaten by a Lake Shake in all that murky water I will report in Sunday.

Cheers - Jeff

Hi Nicole. The 45/35/20 is a Macrobolic Nutrition Diet and was recommended to me while I was doing my second round of Athlean-X.

The theory is that this percentage allows your body to put on lean muscle mass while still burning away body fat. As for how that works with all the distance training done here, I'm not sure but since I still incorporate my daily workouts into my triathlon distance training, I'm sticking with that ratio (or pretty close).

What a gorgeous day for the first outdoor ride!!!  But I was a mess with the Garmin. I forgot to switch to bike mode, so it looks like I did a 38.42 mile run. And I didn't stop it when we stopped for coffee ... or for the time it took me to wander around the track where I also stopped to watch my daughter throwing today. So, while the 2:30:33 indicates a 15.xx mph, I know we were moving faster than that. It was a very nice hilly ride, and I'd estimate our avg. to be around 18mph.

Legs felt solid the entire time, and I had to slow to wait for my riding partners after the long climbs. I know my bike fitness is much better for the work I did this winter with TrainerRoad and Sufferfest, but I wish I would have kept it a bit more consistent ...especially in the past 3 or 4 weeks.

But it was an awesome ride!!

Well, things were progressing well up until Friday, I was gradually reducing my training for my Tri next week. Doing some gentle 5 mile runs and some cycling, and an old injury has resurfaced, and I am sat down with a bag of ice strapped to my knee!!

Had completed my first road cycle, averaging 15.6 miles per hour (on a mountain bike), not sure what happened, but it is very painful.

Going to take a complete week off training in the hope that it will recover, but will dose myself up on pain killers if it doesnt.

Hope everyone else is having a better time of it than me!!

Good afternoon, ya'll!!

It has been a week of rest and some 2 swims. The groin/leg feel like they are back to normal and will probably get back to the training tomorrow. I am little nervous getting back on the bike for a long ride after what I did to myself last Sunday but I know that mental part can be overcome. I miss the bike and runs. I also hate that I didn't get to race yesterday.

Been hanging out with the wife and son today. We started getting the nursery ready for the twins over the weekend. We are still not finished.

Been looking around for my next race. I loved the heck out of my first sprint but want a little more. I feel like the Oly distances are what I am looking for. I am looking at a race on 5/26 that is .5 swim, 25 mile ride, and a 5K. I don't know why the run is shorter but the outdoor swim and longer ride excite me. I am debating if I need some more sprints under my belt.

I'm looking forward to hearing how Jeff did yesterday.

Hope everyone has a good week. I'm excited about getting back out there!

Good morning peeps!

Just in from a brisk but amazing 17 mile ride. Averaged 18.9 mph with a max of 39.6.

That ties my best pace for this route from last year when I was probably in my peak biking condition. That bodes well for what I have in store as my biking becomes more consistent. It was great to be out there for an early morning ride again.

I've got the first of 3 all-day training days this morning. Ugh. And today's is likely to go late which will keep me from pool time tonight. Not cool. Glad I got out there this morning.

Shake it off, Nicole. We all have those days ... I eat badly at least once per week, but don't see it as eating "badly" per se.

We're in this for the long haul ... when you commit to that, the sporadic "bad days" are nothing more than a blip. Today's another day ... as is tomorrow. Don't let your thoughts that it was a "bad" day allow you to spiral in the wrong direction. Spiral up instead and let today's workout start the trend!

Onward!

Nicole,

You didn't eat badly! You rewarded yourself for all the training you do! I reward myself every weekend.

I had a burger, fries, and shake over the weekend and it was fantastic! I know I'll burn it off today, and tomorrow. It's Monday- time to train, and curb back the calories just a little.  I'll have a beer tonight while I watch a baseball game- yum.

I'm going to hit the road today for an easy 4 mile run to get my legs back after being off last week. I'm sure they will feel like bricks.

What you got people!
