I've been hitting all areas and making good progress. I think swimming is my weakest area but I will continue to hit it the rest of the month. So I guess swimming is my nervous area as I have yet to do any OWS and I still need to try on my wetsuit, which I have not done either. HCS5QA - 2007-11-13 2:09 PM I see the talked slowed down a bit since I checked in this morning. It's getting harder to keep up but I did notice talk about swimming, something that we're all slowly getting better at, at least from what I have read. Today is a busy day but I hope to get in a short run this evening or tomorrow morning depending how my left ankle is feeling. Either way i should be hitting the pool tomorrow. Also I forgot to report that my first Tri is in 12 days (San Dimas Turkey Tri, 25NOV). That will have made for a busy month of training and races attended. Ok back to work, check in later. Sigh...race season goes into November in CA... So how you feelin' about the tri Hector? What do you feel are your strong and weak areas? What things are you excited about (no...besides the gals on this thread) and nervous about? Any chance you can do any OWS before the tri. That will make a difference. Especially good if you can go out with a group. I went into my first tri a little over-confident since I come from a swimming background and have spent lots of time in open water. One of the main things I would have done differently would have been to spend time practicing outside of the pool This summer I found an OWS partner and we swam every saturday - it made a big difference, I cut 3 min off my swim in the Cornhusker State Games Sprint from the year before The funny part of that was, when I told my mom - she said something to the effect of 'wow, and you're a year OLDER' LOLOL x2. Biggest difference with open water swimming (OWS)...NO lane lines at the bottom of the pool. If you can't get out and do an open water swim, at least do some sighting drills in the pool...close your eyes when your face is in the water...only open your eyes when you take a breath, or when you lift your head out of the water to look forward (don't crash into the end of the pool...heh). Other advice I wish I had for my 1st tri...don't get caught up in the sprint at the start...line up on the outside (and to the back if you need to). The few extra yards won't kill you and you'll have a better first experience. Start out SLOW...you saw how hard it was to hold back in your half marathon...same goes for the swim...many people go out way too fast at the start, and end up struggling at the end of the swim...much better to go out slow, get your breathing regulated, and THEN start to kick it in if you're feeling good. If you LIKE the excitement at the start, then practice that in the pool...full out sprint for 50 yds, them slow down and get into a rythym. Again, judging from your experience with your half marathon, YOU'LL DO GREAT! Just hold back a little...you'll still have a bike and run to complete after the swim . |

What's weird is running doesn't hurt, but walking a lot DOES. Dang, that sounds like my PF! Massage it, see if you have any knots in there that can be worked out, stretch the heck out of those calf's. I like rolling mine on a frozen bottle of water. Gatoraid bottles (go gators!) with all those little ridges are nice as they massage while icing. |

What's weird is running doesn't hurt, but walking a lot DOES. There could have been several issues in this case. 1.) Did you compare the inside soles? Do the Nikes have a different arch support than the Mizuno's? Either too high, or too low can both cause problems. 2.) When at rest does it hurt to flex your big toe? You may have ended up with turf toe. It's been a LONG time since my athletic training class, but I recall something about that. 3.) Do you run with more wieght on your toes? Though it should be a very similar strike (or so is my understanding), many people strike differently when walking vs running. In how you're distributing your weight, will make a difference in why it hurts when walking and not running. My 2 cents are... foot's not used to arch support in Nikes, may have strained muscles and/or ended up with a "stone" bruise. Either way, you got it dude... Light Heat followed by massage and stretching, and ice and rest. |

Agreed. We don't have an undertow in the MN lakes I swim in , but I still, for safety's sake, swim back and forth along the shore in the guarded area...you still get your sighting practice...I go far buoy to far buoy and see how straight of a line I can swim... Edited by sparco 2007-11-13 4:09 PM |
