Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() nevans71 - 2008-06-17 9:23 AM Am I crazy? I'm thinking about doing the Great Illini Endure half Ironman Sept. 6. Is that too ambitious? It's only 11 or so weeks away. --Natalie I'm glad Ken answered you first. I don't want to be a dream crusher either, but I have to second what he said. I went and watched the Gulf Coast HIM, and it was very eye-opening. It inspired me to do it, but with the realization that I need to be much better trained than I am now in order to compete for 6 - 7 hours or more! The important thing in my mind is to train smartly. Adding too much volume all at once risks injury. Yet in order to swim, bike, and run the required distances requires a lot of endurance training. Is there a race later on that you could train for? And/or you could plan to come to the Florida gulf coast and do this HIM in May! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dream crushers! I went home and cried! Nah, I'm only kidding. I appreciate the reality check. I know in my heart that it's too early. My A race is still two months away, so I need to focus on that first. It could be disastrous to add the kinds of distances now I would need to do to get to HIM--I would risk overtraining or injury. And I don't need either of those. Besides, I have a lot of work yet to do on my run. I think I could limp through the swim and bike portions of a half even at my current level of training, but there is no way I could run 13 miles. So, let's see....I'll be 38 next year for my first HIM, so maybe I could shoot for a full IM for my 40th birthday. --Natalie |

That would give me great incentive to stay in shape after my August race. If I do a 20-week training plan for Gulf Coast, I would start training again the week of Christmas, and it would be nice to go into the holidays with a decent level of fitness, so that I don't come out the other side of the holidays a gigantic blob. The Chicago Half Marathon is Sept. 18--probably too early? What do you runner-types think? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Guess who's back? Sorry to have forgotten my fellow Manatee's for so long and I am ashamed of such despicable behavior on my part. The pleasures and joy's of home ownership and international travel have put a big dent in my fitness level but I will get it back soon. The bike is still in shipment but I have my running shoes with me so I can get in a couple of runs a week at least. I will be up and running soon. Maybe a month or so to get back to full speed. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, Manatees! Today I completed my second triathlon and my first sprint race. You can check out my race report here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... Overall, I had a great time. I can't wait to do another sprint--it was a lot of fun. I will have to work pretty hard to be ready for this year's olympic distance. The 5k run was still a challenge; twice that distance will be even more of a challenge. --Natalie |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Weekly Recap Bike 3 rides 67.80 Mi - 3h 34m 19s Run - 4 runs 14.27 Mi - 2h 38m 17s Swim 1 2300.00 Yd - 1h 01m Pretty good week! Missed Sunday ride due to wife/weather. Worked on speed on all 3 rides and am feeling really strong right now. I need to consistently build my long ride back. Run - 4 runs, all short and 2 of them had decent speed work. Swim - note to self, 3 days a week. We are looking now at doing a new half ironman in October on Amelia Island. Its kind of tough to get the long stuff in during the summer as both my wife and I are in business's which make it all in the summer but it sure would be nice to race when temps are falling instead of rising. Both of like Amelia Island but have never been together, so it seems like a good spot for a vacation. Our other choice is the Iron Star Half in Houston in November. Probably be more fun just to stick to sprints till Gulf Coast but I really like training for the longer races. We shall see. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Weekly Recap I had somewhat of a short week, but tried to keep it balanced. I did 2 swims (60 minutes), 2 bikes (29.5 miles), and 2 runs (8.7 miles), and nothing terribly long or difficult. I also took Friday off (a complete day of rest!) -- I try to do that because I seem to be better rested come race day. Then on Saturday I raced my first tri since last October. Barring injury, I don't think I'll let it go that long again. I'm traveling for work this week, so training will consist of the hotel fitness room. Oh well... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Weekly Recap Kinda odd week. Didn't swim, got swim. 3 good bikes including two 40 milers, total 107. 3 runs including my lousy race on saturday. Gotta start rebuilding the run stamina. First 1.5 miles were good, then I fell apart again. Gonna look for another 5k soon. How bout some monthly goals for July guys! Swim 20,000, bike 425, run 60. ouch Edited by Manatee Express 2008-06-29 9:14 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Weekly Recap I did not have a great week -- traveling always throws me off. I got 3 swims, 2 bikes, and 3 runs in, but none were particularly satisfying. I'm on vacation this week, so I should be able to get some good training in. I'm also running the Peachtree Road Race 10K on the 4th -- that's more of an event than a chance for a PR because there are 55,000 runners! I'll have to think about July goals. I've signed up for the Tour de France bike challenge, so I guess I'll be bike-focused. That's probably a good thing because it is so hard to run in the summer around here. I've also found a good spot not far from my office to do open water swimming, so I'm going throw some of that in. |
