ive never taken an ice-bath, but im icing as we speak.  i just got back from a quickie 30min run and because of the lower leg pain/injury ive had in the past, i'm hoping that icing and taking an anti-inflammatory, after each run, will help me stay healthy til IMAZ.

at least thats the logic im going with.  we'll see how i hold up.

brick94513 - 2010-04-20 12:51 PM QOTD:  Have any of you used ice baths after your long runs-rides?

I was introduced to this technique a few months ago when following a marathon plan.  I recently came across an article in USAT Triathlon Life and thought it would be a good topic to discuss.

Yes, I do use the ice bath per se.  However, I prefer just cold tap water.  I like to sit in the tub with compression clothing and then turn on the cold spigot.  I think getting in first before turning on the water eliminates some of the shock.  I continue to fill the tub until the water is over my quads and hips.  Once I turn the water off, I then sit there for 8 - 10 minutes while attempting to read as a distractor.  Afterwards, I'll dry off, wait for about 10 minutes, then take a nice warm shower.

I think the process is benefical.  I don't have the link, but there has been studies that show ice baths have reduced recovery time.  The theory is that ice bathes help with microtrauma and through vasoconstriction reduce swelling, tissue breakdown, and flushing of waste products (Schmitz, 52, Triathlon Life).

Looks like people are training!  I like it!

I got a quick session of hill work on the tradmill this morning.  It was tough.  My legs were a little sore from yesterday's ride.

Anyone have anything planned for the weekend?  I'm going to pass on the trip to Vegas for the XTERRA.  I just don't feel like traveling and my son has his second tryout for baseball all-stars.  I might sign up for a 1 mile OWS competition just for the training.

Well, I officially miss Florida weather!  Brought my stuff to run outside, after work, today, but rain & fogCry

Went to gym & put my sorry a$$ on the dreadmill...10k progression run...at least I am going again!

Liking the bike porn... very noiceCool  Hopefully I'll put up a pic of my mine in a few days.

Ice baths...never had one.  Know several of my runner friends who do, especially after hard workouts & races.  May one dayUndecided

It looks like I'm a little late trying to join a group...but "closed for now" left a little room for negotiation I hope. =)

I'm Dave - 28 years old in California (Silicon Valley), did a couple triathlons in 2006 then took a break from the sport while getting my masters. Now I'm getting back into it, training for my first HIM. I come from a swimming/water polo background so I have some experience to offer to the group in that respect. I'm mostly looking for motivation and training ideas from the group.

If the group remains closed, I understand but if there's room to squeeze one more in, let me know! Thanks all.

im interested to see that, only because i read an article that proved the exact opposite.  Laughing  personally i think sitting in freezing water is asinine.  i dont think they do squadoosh.

nothin super horrible, only a couple bad ones that i remember.  i tried running when the sand was blowin somethin fierce last summer and i could hardly breathe.  it was one of the dumber things ive done.  when we PCS from here, most of us typically file some sort of insurance claim to get the windshield replaced and some paint work due to that crap.  i hate it, this is my third time being stationed here.

I'm a 2862 (electronics tech).  Cool, I spent some time at Pendleton about a dozen years ago.  Trying to get back down that way next summer actually.

There are some great MTB trails out back of the 14 area on Pendelton.  I lived in Falbrook when I was stationed there and rode my MTB to work through the Naval Weapons station.  At lunch me and a few other guys would ride the trails back there.

Ice bath?  Are you nuts, my compression shorts already create enough of a shrivel factor with out subjecting myself to an additional round of humiliation!!!!  Kidding aside, never been a big fan of icing -- always seems to be painful and does not help me so much.  No ibuprofen is a different story!!!!

Subject: Some Guidance Please....

Looking to invest in some various equipment and would like some opinions on your favorites/what you use for the following:

Tri shorts OR Tri suit
Heart rate monitor
Wet suit (one piece or two + brand)

Really intrigued by the HRM as I had one on for the first time this PM.  Interesting to see how the body responds to the speed / incline / intensity.  Personally, I need to figure out how to "get some more air" as I did not get tired or feel that my pulse was high (hit 168), I just could not feel like I was getting anything in to the lungs.

As always, appreciate the guidance and support!
