I have not tried what he is suggesting but I'll experiment. If you want to read start here: http://www.joefrielsblog.com/2010/12/top-10-most-read-posts-of-2010.html |

Great article by Chrissie Wellington: http://espn.go.com/espnw/blog/_/post/6098928/sports-and-addiction I'm not sure it's good to be saying this, but I wish I could develop something close to this kind of addiction. I'm too laid back, I never get that driven to do something. I have so many interests, that I don't focus on one thing forever. I saw the picture of the girl in the article and thought "wow, I'd like to look like her". My second thought was "nope, don't want to work that hard". But it would be fun to participate in a sport where you can participate fully and use your physical conditioning for you instead of as a limiting factor. I've committed to doing 2 sprint tri's this year. I hope that through the training and races I can find a high that keeps me going after my commitment is over. Christi |

Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Christi, Glad that you are feeling better and happy to see you back at it today. That girl is an absolutely amazing athlete. Not only does she rule her women competitors but she is so good that she routinely beats a good deal of the pro men in her races. Genetically she is blessed, many call her a freak (she is that good). Like so many that are successful in their livelihoods I would wager that she gets a deep enjoyment out of doing her work (in her case training). I hope that you find that high as well Christi. I can tell you this, if you never try it you will never know. At least you won't have any regrets about giving it a shot. cvochristi - 2011-02-23 2:12 PM junthank - 2011-02-22 5:21 PM I didn't realize I was an addict, but I guess I am. Is your next race an OWS where there could be a big swell? Member 46 | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Yes, there will be an OWS, its pretty much the same race distance wise a little further down the coast (still in pretty much the same region of NSW). I've given myself 4weeks to prepare (do you think its enough? Jeff), its pretty much the last race of this lenght that i can do for the season in NSW. I also got myself a wetsuit as well so that will hopefully help. |

I've been sick with a dumb cold all week, plus tapering for a race this weekend and it's just not the same. My energy level is much lower overall when I don't workout. I guess that could make an addiction...doing something because it makes you feel good? I know if I had all the money and free time in the world, I would certainly train and race a whole lot more. James...great to see you getting back into it! Amanda...how's your weather in ATL these days? Jeff and I are having it pretty good right now, though I'm dreading the return of summer. Christi...did you have your belt test? I'm off for half #17 this weekend. Not expecting miracles. Too many weird injuries and illnesses over the past couple months. Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Hey James, Yes, the wet suit will add buoyancy so that should help you out in the water. Is 4 weeks enough? Ideally what you want to do James is complete the distances in training. If that takes one week to complete then 1 week would be enough. So, I'm not certain if 4 weeks is enough BUT it is what it is, right? The great news is that you have proven that you can handle the bike and run distances in training and racing. Given that, I would focus most of my attention over the next 4 weeks on the swim. I'm not saying to ignore the bike and run. Still bike and run but make swimming your biggest priority in that training block. A week prior to race day I would SAFELY try and simulate the swim portion of the race. DO NOT TAKE ANY RISKS. After that make an honest go or no-go judgement on doing the race. jamesjong - 2011-02-24 1:00 AM Yes, there will be an OWS, its pretty much the same race distance wise a little further down the coast (still in pretty much the same region of NSW). Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Melissa, I have similar "sweet tooth" addictions. They get the best of me sometimes. I have read that WSJ article. There has been quite a bit of banter about it on the blogs out there. That TRI dude in the article approach to his family is not one that I share. Colds do seem to be going around these days. Take care of it and get better. Regarding energy levels, I'm similar to you. However, I personally find it to be more of a mental challenge if I miss workouts. Perhaps that is related to not getting a dose of endorphins. Also, getting too much exercise (fatigue) will reduce my energy levels as well. So I have to guard against both conditions. Good luck with #17 this weekend. Let us know how it goes! melkat - 2011-02-24 6:51 PM junthank - 2011-02-22 8:21 PM I didn't realize I was an addict, but I guess I am. Expert 1191 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Hey Gang, I was going thru my training log and came across the 2nd Sprint Tri I did back in September of 2009. I know I mentioned it previously but the race director wrote the following after the race that I thought you would find amusing: +++ "wow!! what a day!!!! i got up at 3 am, with a lot a rain at my house, i drove to the shop, and it wasn't raining, i said to myself, looks like it is my lucky day. when i got the beach it was pouring, the frogs were so loud, i never heard them like that before. so here i am setting up transition, aka the "SWAMP". people calling me on my cell, trying to find out if the race is cancel. life gards, come over at 6:30am, dude it doesn't look good out there, 4 foot waves and up, rip current, but at least it wasn't raining anymore. the desicion was made to offer people the choice of swimming or not swimming, only few brave triathletes went for it, it was ugly out there, the 2 loops became one very shorty life guards were great, they were all over it, jet ski and all. They got a workout today. the rest of the race was fine, it start raining just when the race was over." +++ I was one of the stupid guys that elected to do the swim. It was not fun and I would never do it again. |

Veteran 103 Albany Oregon | Subject: RE: Hokies 1st Timer's Group - FULL Melissa, Wonder if we have the same crud that is going around? Started with a slight sore throat for a couple of days with some fatigue, then wham with chills and congested head. I can breath again, but have lingering sore throat and fatigue. Sorry you are less than full strength for your race. Sounds like you have adjusted mentally though. Hope it goes well for you. I can't imagine running as much as you do. I have an "anti-addiction" to running LOL. My sweet tooth snagged on some vanilla meringues from Trader Joes today. Not good. I hid them in the pantry. Out of sight, out of mouth?....we'll see. Had my belt test at the height of my illness. Funny, but I tend to play sports well when sick. I have no nervous energy because I can't spare any. I did good, even without practicing for two days. I moved up to purple belt and am happy to be learning new material again. Christi |
