I looked into the Mt Diablo 50k ultra before, that's gotta be a real tough ride!

I mountain bike and road ride Mt. Diablo quite often.  The off-road climb through Mitchell Canyon is much tougher than the road ride up either the North or South Road.  The 50K ultra starts near my house and runs up and over Mt. Diablo.  Its a good race, but has an ungodly amount of vertical ascent for a run.

Just officially signed up for Racine Ironman 70.3!!!

Nice work!

It looks like Jay, you, and I will all being doing HIM this year.  Will have to run a little wager on who can most accurately predict their finish time.

Ha, notice I said looked into not decided to run.  Yeah, that's some masochistic trail running up there.

That sounds like a good idea Tim. I'm going to need some time though to make this preciction. You guys get to do your workouts outside right now. I'm all on the trainer and treadmill right now. I need to wait and see how my training this winter will translate to the outdoors.

To make it fair, because who knows what will transpire between now and then, how about a week before the our race?

Fack, I dunno guys, I may have to back out on my HIM.  I still haven't even registered yet.  I'm not sure if I'm gonna even be able to get my training in.  I am looking at another field op in June and a 7-week course from July-mid August that will probably derail most of my training completely w/ the exception of some running.  That doesn't realistically seem to me like I will be ready to race in September.

Umm... Oh no you don't!  This is completely unacceptable.  You need to get this down before you head to the frickin' desert for a year.

Check this out:  http://bbsctri.com/pumpkinman/

Race is October 15.  You have a solid base established.  And, its not like you are going to be sitting on your arse eating bon-bons while out in the field.  You could easily jump into a 12 week plan and be ready in 8 weeks.  You would just have to hit the swim hard and the rest would fall in place.

If you commit to this, I would even try to make it down there to race with you.  Come on....

I looked at that not too long ago when I started thinking I might not make Superfrog.  Vegas is 5-6 hrs each way though.  You know how much I love driving.  I'll have to think on it some.

Jay, do you get Triathlete Magazine?  If not, I could try to scan and post an article.  There was an interesting article in last month's issue about athletes substituting Crossfit workouts for traditional HIM training.  Interestingly, the one woman athlete had very similar results in back-to-back HIM races using different training approaches.

I thought this might be appropriate for you considering your upcoming time predictament.  When your in the field, do you still get dedicated PT time?  Does the marine corp incorporate Crossfit into their training?  I know alot of public agencies (police and fire) are using their WODs (workout of the day).

That pain in your arm is me twisting it!  I'm not going to let you back out without applying a lot of guilt!

That Pumpkin man thing looks interesting Tim. It's in October when everything is pretty much done around here. I don't know if I can make it happen, but I think I'm going to work on the wife and see if we want to take another trip to Vegas. Give me a few weeks to see how things look this year for work and I'll get back.

I do, I've actually got my 'next part to read' marked on the article.  I HATE CF though.  Not just a little bit either.  Yes, we have huge CF cult followings in the MC.  Hell, our gyms even have dedicated CF ROOMS where you can go do the WODs.  I have done some of it, I just won't have the ability to do so in the field.  We are pretty focused on the operation when we go out, not really any place to go for a run, etc.  Not to mention the inability to shower regularly.  I am going to try and take out a TRX from the gym though if they have any available.  That will at least give me something to do.

Man!!! that would be cool!!!! I've never done this before with flying a bike and gear. Let me see what I can do. We go to Vegas once a year at least anyhow and haven't planned what date. My wife just may go for this since she's kind of wanted to do a tri in Vegas too. No promises yet, but let me see what I can pull off!

Brian, I'm flying to Colorado in a couple months.  I'm going to buy the Trico Iron Side box for my bike.  Case is UPS/FEDEX ready.  Southwest has decent fares for the bike, but other airlines will gouge you.  As of right now, I'm planning on shipping the bike ahead of me to the hotel.

LMK how it goes. I usually fly southwest and have a cc with them for miles. I'll check them out too. I can ship them to Anne's Aunt's house out there. I'll probably stay there anyway.

Anyone racing this weekend?  I was planning on another off-raod duathlon, but not really sure now.  It has been raining all week.  The course is probably super muddy.  It definately won't be in condition for a PR.  While the mud adds to the fun,  I'm just not sure I want to have to deal with all of the bike maintenance afterward.  Not only timely, but costly!  I'll probably make it a last minute decision.

Check out the Adidas Supernova Riots.  There a little on the heavy side, but super stable in my opinion.  I pretty much do all my training in these shoes now, road and trail.

Will do. I've been eyeing those for some time now on runningwarehouse.com. I've got a laundry list of styles to try on.

I completed the duathlon this morning, a bit of good and not so good.  Had perfect weather, 69 degrees, overcast, no wind.  1st run was ok, had a PB on the bike portion, 2nd run wasn't so good.   My overall time was 2:10:28, 5 mins over what I had predicted for worst case.   Really felt bad for the 2nd run, but finished it.  T1 was 40 secs, T2 was 46 secs, transitions went well.  Had a crazy demanding week leading up to race day and just couldn't get the sleep I needed.   Also, halfway through the bike portion, my stomach felt like it wasn't taking hydration well.  I drank what I could, but didn't want to force it and hurl.   The elastic shoestrings were great, thanks for the tip.   I was somewhat disappointed in my performance, all that training can't make up for lack of sleep or nutrition.  I was surprised at my final time, because, judging by how I felt, I should have done much worse.

Good work!  Transitions sound like they were fast and smooth by the times.  How long was the bike leg again?  Did you eat any peanut butter sandwiches on training rides?  Think that was what caused the nausea?  Were you drinking just water on the bike or sports drink of some sort?
