Just found this pic on my coach's website.  Computrainer multi-rider @ its best.  I'm the one in the red shirt.  Coach Keith Cook is on my right in the Ironman Finisher shirt.  John on my left has done one Ironman as well.   If you look closely you'll see the Mdot tattoos on their legs. The 3 of us in this pic are all training for Ironman Lake Placid this July.   4 guys sweating away for 2+ hours....ah the smell of it.  I felt bad when Keith's wife came down to take the pic lol..

Great photo Steve! This actually looks much more fun than doing solo training sessions on the Kurt Kinetic. I need to find a group like yours and northern ivys here in these parts.

In the same vane here is a quick video that one of the Kona age groupers took of one of our training sessions.  Short, but you get the point.  Take this and extend it for two hours and you get the point.  And I am not in the video .

Tonight was my first shot at doing hill repeats on the computrainer 6.8 miles of hills the basic protocol was the first .2 was flat and the next .4 was at 2%.  You then had another .2 of flat and .4 at 3% take this pattern all the way to 9.9% and then back down decreasing a percent every .2.  It was brutal.  The total course was just under 7 miles and my time was 34:12.  The goal was to be in the big ring the whole time and basically to stand and climb the whole time.  It was insane!  My quads were on fire!  Here is a image of my HR vs speed to give you an idea of where we were.

Okay, here's my mundane question of the day.  Masters swim practice this morning- only was able to do 1100 yards becasue I have a cold- AGAIN!!!!  Probably my third since Christmas.  Before I started getting healthy with all of this training, I rarely ever got a cold- maybe every other year.  I'm a hand washing / sanitizer fanatic.  So the mundane question- why do I keep getting colds?  Is my body more beat up and less able to fight things off?  My bride is after me to start taking vitamins, which I plan to do.  I eat pretty well, get a reasonable amout of sleep (~7 hours), aren't around more or less people than I have been in the past, etc.  Any thoughts???

I used to start training and wind-up with bronchitis or pneumonia all the time.  My wife sent me to a pulmonologist and he diagnosed me as an asthmatic.  I have been on meds since Novemeber, this is my first winter season without bronchitis or pneumonia since.  I have been able to run, bike and swim without coming down with cold like symptoms afterwords.  Are you sure you have a cold and that it's not a respiratory/asthma like issue?

I'm no doc but your immune system does get effected after a strenuous workout and it may be taking longer to recover than usual until it gets used to the level of increased activity.  I have gotten many less colds since getting into Tri's but the NYC Marathon killed my immune system last year, I was a mess for 2 weeks after with a nasty cold that wouldn't go away.

Thanks guys- I was really pondering the asthma idea yesterday, but today it's a full-on cold.  Maybe a little rest this weekend- right after we get through 10 yards of mulch spread in our yard!  Wish I could get some training credit for that.

That is awesome, will totally look into that! On a side note, I rode a time trial today of 20k and my average speed was 19.9 so I was very happy considering that my trainer rides have been at 16. Also averaged about the same speed in a crit after I was dropped by the group Before the drop I was riding at 28-29mph on a flat course. It really makes a difference riding with the group that's for sure! 44 mile road race tomorrow and hopefully I can keep a decent pace and not lose the pack, this road biking is really tough and there are some very fast, talented riders out there.

Amen to that!!!  That is an awesome average speed!  Especially if you were solo!  Congrats, now you know the delta from trainer to road.  Was the crit a good time?  The look like the are a blast but they also look so dangerous.  Did you loose the group due to a mechanical?  What happened?

The crit was a great time and a learning experience for sure. I really enjoyed riding in the pack but after a few laps, I just could not handle the sprints after the corners and just fell off. After leaving the group my speeds fell from 30- 20mph. These guys were fast and I just did not have it in me to hang on. It definitely felt safe though even at close quarters with the group, it seems like most of them knew what they were doing and nobody did anything to compromise the rest. I would recommend that you try one; really fun time and 30 minutes of pushing to the max. Hopefully the legs and lungs will hold up for another day.

Run:
28.00 Mi - 3h 43m (new treadmill with iFit really helping with increasing my pace)

Other:  3 hrs of skiing in slush on Friday. The warmest day of the year

Wow, what a week.  Really an off week; had a travel day and working through some minor medical issues, ugh.  I see the next few weeks being sort of light but I keep telling myself that is how the cookie crumbles from time to time.  Good swim and bike week but light on the run.  I am in Utah this upcoming week so likely more running than anything else.

Total Time: 9:24

Swim - 2:04:13 5350 Yards

Bike - 5:27 91.52 Miles

Run - 1:52:34 11.45

Subject: Weekly Summary

Weekly summary for the group below.

Just got back from the pool and am pretty upset that I called it quits after 22 laps. Must be the evening swim thing, at least I hope its that.  Ever since I finished the TI class I can't seam to get motivated in the pool.  Only 1000 yards last week and now this today.   Very strange.  Going to sleep early so I can make it up in the AM.  I know I can ... I know I can ... I know I can.

Steve, I hear ya man!  We all hit those points when it seems that one more step, or one more interval, or one more lap is just to much!  Just keep in mind how awesome it is going to be breaking the tape in Placid!!!  That is what it is all about!!!  If it was easy they would call the race "PanzyMan" and the tattoo would be of a couch, a chicken wing and a buddha belly.  But I personally think the M dot is a better keep sake!

LMAO!!!   Thanks for the pep talk, I appreciate it!  We all need it once in a while.   If any of you ever go through a lull like that just picture the Pansy tatoo and if that doesn't get you going nothing will.

What ever the spell was it is now broken, went back this morning @ O-Dark-Hundred and did my first ever reverse split in the pool.  First mile in 37 minutes second in 35.  Felt that I had plenty left to complete the full 2.4 but didn't want to push it after not swimming such a distance in 3 weeks.  Better safe than sorry. All I can say is Total Immersion rocks!   If anyone is interested my TI coach is doing a weekend session on April 30th & May 1st in Princeton.  http://www.tri4funtraining.com/

Wrapping up for the day and going for a 7 mile run.  Treadmill or outside....decisions....decisions....
