Working early & late every day this week to make up for my missing work on Monday, so that didn't leave very much time for training! Last night we had a hail storm (wtf?) so I didn't have track practice either. I only had my run stuff with me yesterday so I went to the gym to do my run on the treadmill.... I wish I'd brought my swim stuff to the gym since I HATE running on the treadmill. I lasted 15 minutes and that was it! I need to figure out how to wake up early and get my workouts in before work... It's hard to do a workout after a 10-12 hour work day! Even a 1/2 hr swim or run would be good so I don't try to make up for everything on the weekends Your idea to get the workouts in before work is a good one... My workouts were sporatic at best and then I started working out at 5 am... It's made all the difference. It took a while to get on the schedule - but it's doable... I hate leaving my stuff at home... So frustrating! Hope you have a great weekend! ok, my goal for next week is to workout before work on Tuesday and Thursday. I'll try 2x/wk morning workouts for a few weeks, then try to increase it from there. I have my swimming stuff with me, so planning on hitting the gym after work! |

Flats suck but at least it's good practice changing a tube. Congrats on the weight loss milestone! Those pounds can be stubbornFlat tire on the ride today. Found out the hard way the pump I bought does not fit presta valve on tire. ran home. got car. picked up bike. Oh well. I broke 180 this morning on the scale. 179.6. It took about 2 months of yo-yo to get down below 180. 170, here we come. My thoughts too! Lucky it was running distance away! I always carry my phone, $20, bus/train pass, CO2, spare tubes, tools, and a mini-pump. Amazing it all fits on my bike! I know it's been a good ride if I don't have to use any of that stuff Good luck with your weight loss goal! |

Anyone know how to change the settings so the message you are replying to is included??? I can't seem to figure it out...would make it easier to reply directly to a post!!! lol Congrats too on your half! That's my goal too (race is in June though). That's great you were able to run so fast on hills! |

I think I'm going to have to get into morning workouts, too. Things are just too busy with the last month of school, family visits, and concerts to be able to work out frequently enough in the evenings. I can't be this sporadic and expect the fitness improvements and weight loss I want to see. With that being said, I did see some running improvement this week. I got my new orthotics, and my hip is feeling much better with them. I'm not as timid about trying to push myself now - before I was afraid that I was doing damage, but today I felt no qualms about running harder (as evidenced in my much improved time run time today- still a long way to go, but I've got to step back and recognize the improvement there). Now to keep going! |

It took about 2 months of yo-yo to get down below 180. 170, here we come. Bummer about the tire - but it was pretty cool that you ran home to get the car. How far did you have to go? Care to make it interesting? 184 is my goal - and I hope to reach it by June 23rd. I think 170 is your ultimate goal - correct? We should set up a bet where the only way you lose is if you don't reach your goal in the amount of time you set for yourself. If I fail and you reach your goal on time - I owe you a six pack or 2 of really good beer. We chould send each other a visa cash card through the mail... Up for it? For some reason, I stayed close to home and did not do the 13.6 mile loop, rather the 4.6 mile loop, and I was only 2 miles out when it went flat. Now I get to change my first tire! I'm down with the competition. My goal is 165 by Aug. 6th. It seems I would have an unfair advantage as it's relatively the same amount of weight in differing amounts of time, but I think we could figure something out! |

With your hip on the mend - it won't be long until you see some major gains in your running speed. |

So how 'bout this - we'll weigh in on August 6. If I have met and maintained my goal of 184 (my goal for august is to actually reach my goal weight of 170...) and you meet your goal of 165 - then it's a wash. But - if someone doesn't follow through and fails to meet his goal, then he owes the other a 20$ gift card to be used for the purchase of beer. What do you think? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My hill climbing clinic today kicked my butt! I think it was the hardest workout I've done in years. I really need to work on hills. I learned so much though. We did three repeats on a 4ish mile long hill that ended with a big incline. The first time I didn't even make it up the hill. After making some good adjustments I made it up the second two times we did it. I am going to be sore though! Some of the key things the teacher focused on were finding a good rhythm and keeping it up. Not just dropping gears and spinning- but focusing more on holding your rhythm. He also spoke a lot about powering your foot through the bottom of the pedal to get more power. He spent a bunch of time showing me how to push my bike to the opposite side of the foot that was down when standing that really helped my ability to climb while standing. I feel exhausted, but also excited to get back out there and get up the hill faster! |

Crossed fingers it doesn't happen again tonight. Stressssss. She's DNR and comfort care but I'm still stressed. The night is young. I'm hanging out in my call room. My mom is working down in Emerg tonight so might get to see her if I have to do another consult down there.... |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() When you guys go walking/hiking, do you track it as a run workout or sports workout? I feel like I shouldn't track it as a run, yet I do want to get an idea of the mileage on the monthly/weekly reports - especially since I can see myself doing a decent amount of hiking this summer, and am thinking of participating in a 13 mile hike later in the year that takes both trail runners and walking hikers. The following may contain more information than you want to know - proceed with caution: My run time is improving, but I am feeling a bit like a fraud sometimes, trying to do this. I AM SLOW!! And weak! ...and I don't even know how to swim yet!! (good thing my sprint has a 300 yard pool swim). So I'm starting to stress about this. I am also quite worried about the fact that I am quite large chested ( I am a 36 DDD - YES, with THREE D's), and I have no idea what I am going to wear that can go in the pool and support me on the run. I wear an underwire bra, a snapping "regular shape" sports bra, AND a racerback compression bra, all three at the same time, to run. I don't think that's going to work in the pool. It seems trivial, but it's stopped me from fitness endeavors before, and I don't want it to stop me anymore. (Reduction will happen after I have kids!) I know that the truth is that none of the fitness time I've logged would've happened if I hadn't signed up for this sprint triathlon, and even if I am dead last, "it's faster than the guy on the couch" ...and I know what the answer is: "keep going", "it will come with time", etc etc, and I know it's all true - but I still feel like I don't even want people to know what I'm trying to do because I just do not fit that mold right now. Ok - just expressing, that's all! I'm not at all thinking of giving up, by any means. These concerns will not stop me, but I do need to face them, recognize them, and move on! I'm realizing this is going to be almost as mental as it is physical (or maybe more?) Edited by boxerdogfriend 2012-05-06 8:05 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Of course you can do this! I hadn't done any running at the beginning of the year and am super nervous for a sprint. Some of the people in this group are total studs but they all started somewhere. I would log hiking under sports just so it's easier to track. I was just playing with the graphs of what I've done and it was neat to see my vmcross country skiing separate which I was considering calling a run workout. I can't really help you with bras as I am a middle aged mom trapped in a 14yo boy body. There have been a lot of interesting threads that I've read on the topic (no idea why...). So maybe search the other forums. I think I saw one in triathlon talk. I know a few friends who swear by Enell bras for monster support. I have heard people mention wearing two under tri tops. Have you looked into a swim plan called 0 to 1650? I've heard a lot of people really happy with results from trying it.Good luck and keep going! |

I could totally understand how that could hold you back and be frustrating. I have heard of people layering as well even for the swim....I would see if you can get a great sports bra that's moisture wicking with the amazing support and wear it under your swimsuit, it should dry pretty quick. Try it out first in the pool and see! Don't worry too much if you can't swim perfectly, when I first started my motto was " it doesnt have to look pretty , just have to get it done! " It's so true we have all started somewhere, we are our own worst enemy! Just remember triathlon is about your own race, it doesnt matter what the other person is doing. |
