strikyr - 2012-04-13 1:54 PM I was able to sneak out for a lunch time swim today. It was actually worse today as there were more kids today then yesterday lol but I did manage to get my own lane. I think all the regulars must have swam earlier or decided to stay away. Can't say I blame them it was chaos lol.  What a difference a day makes. I had an awesome swim today. I was able to go my longest distance non stop 1200 meters and was able to add another 400 meters with the pull bouy. I would have done more but I was pressed for time and had to get back home for the afternoon round of conference calls. It wasn't perfect and I still have a lot of work to do but it so much better then yesterday. I was so much more relaxed and I did not feel like I was rushing at all today. I had much better rythym and I think I just swam with more confidence today. I was even able to work on my kick which has been a struggle. I was doing more of a two beat kick and it was actually working for me. This is why swimming is so fustrating to me. One day it's all good and the next day it's like you forgot how to swim. Hoping for more days like today though.

I hear you there Tony.  My swim last night was really tough for me.  The coach moved me into a faster lane and I just couldn't keep up with the other two after about 2000 yards.  I'm horrible at anything except freestyle and they are slamming out flipturns and pulling hard all the way through to 3700 yards last night.  I was toast and my shoulders are sore today from it.  Gladly taking the weekend off of swimming.  Glad to hear you had a great workout.

About how long is it taking you to swim those 1200 yards?  By this measurement we can start to think about if it smart for you to pick up some speed work in the pool.

Thanks for the half marathon predictions!  How fun!  Now, I just need to get over this stupid cold.  I coughed all last night.  I still don't have a fever so I think I'm still fighting off a really bad cold.  I did my incline treadmill walk for 10 minutes today and felt like I was going to die.  Talk to everyone soon.  Cheers!

Rest day yesterday. I'm going to do a short bike ride today to make sure everything is race ready, then probably a 1 mile easy run before loading everything into my transition bag for Sunday's race.

We'll be heading to Sacramento tomorrow morning and go on a family bike ride as a preview of the course for me tomorrow afternoon.

My second triathlon! I'm getting excited!

I'll get a race report up sometime on Monday.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I know exactly how you feel!  You'll get better soon and PR that thing.

Thanks for the advice Jeff, it's exactly what I was hoping to hear.  I went out with my GPS set so I could only see time and HR, no distance or pace.  Tried to keep HR under Z1 except for the steeper hills.  I went the full 80 minutes and actually felt fine.  Stomach isn't 100%, but I didn't have to stop once.  Small victories.

On a tragic and sad note, I'm not sure if any of you heard about the tragedy which happened up here last night.  5 policemen were shot and 1 killed while at a house during a drug investigation near the seacoast of New Hampshire.

The man killed was the 46 year old chief of police of Greenland NH, and he was scheduled to retire next week.  Senseless tragedy.  The state is in a bit of a state of shock since we somehow tend to believe this sort of thing doesn't happen up here in our sleepy neck of the woods.

a very sad sad day for sure. The event was just two towns over from us. My prayers go out to the family of the police chief. He was just 8 days from retirement....such an unexpected event in such a small quaint town.

Jonathan I can relate to the sore shoulders after the last couple of days work and yeah no swimming for me until Monday. I can only imagine how you feel after that workout at your masters class. So that 1200 took me about 30 minutes which is a bit of an improvement because last week I did a 1000 in 30 minutes. I would say that would be at a moderate pace so not really slow but definitely not really hard either. I think I have been trying to go fast enough where I can maintain decent form. I really need to start timing myself so I should probably do that on Monday. I recently picked up a watch for the pool so I should start using it. I think I have been a little more focused on my endurance and trying to stretch out a little more distance each time out. Today was good because I wasn't going really slow and my endurance and energy did not suffer. I also seemed to keep decent form as well. If you think there are some things that would help me and I would benefit from by all means let me know.

Guys, I'm sorry to hear about this especially when it hits so close to home. Unfortunately this happens far to often and I agree this is a totally senseless tragedy. My prayers go out to the all the families of those police officers that were involved.

Found an unusual training hazard in my basement tonight...

Our basement in not finished and we need more outlets. On Wednesday night I had to unplug the deep freeze so I could plug in the treadmill. I told my son - don't let me forget to plug this back in! Of course, I forgot - DOH! Realized it tonight. I will busy cooking roast beef and round steak tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well, if that is worst thing that has happened while my husband has been gone I'm thankful. Last year the basement flooded - now that was a mess!

So I'm tossing around the idea of racing a sprint a little earlier than I originally planned - maybe. There is a race not too far from me on April 22nd. I have participated in this race for the last 3 years but I did'nt think I would be ready this year and they usually fill up really fast. I just checked and they are not full (40 spots open!!) so now I'm thinking about it. April 17th is the deadline to decide - I'm watching the weather until then . I'm wishy washy because I don't really love the course - pool swim, short looped bike course and the roads are not great, really nice trail run though which I do like. The real kicker is it only costs 35 bucks!

Bagging my swim today - not feeling up to it. I'll try to make it up tomorrow or Saturday.

We're surviving the week with my husband gone o.k. so far. I've stayed on top of my workouts thanks to my bike trainer, treadmill, a little planning and determination.

Good discussions yesterday!

Do it!  it's cheap and if nothing else it lets you compare your current fitness to years prior.

X2...do it.

x3 DO IT!!!!!!!

If you don't you already know you're going to regret it.  At least I would.........Regret not doing it.

Do it!!!

So tomorrow morning is my long run 20 miles. The people putting on the race are having a group run so we can get a feel for the course. This will be the farthest I have ever run, It only a training run but I am excited to see if I will be able to do it without walking I have been doing so much better on my other runs.

My turn for some advice and hopefully a little pep talk.  This stomach thing has really kicked my butt, though I finally feel almost human again today.  I took 2 days completely off (Tues/Weds) and followed my own advice and tried to run yesterday but to no avail.  10 minutes and 2 ugly pit stops convinced me it was better to take another day off.  I admit I'm more than a little bummed at missing these runs 3 weeks out from the HM.  I have a question before I head out this afternoon.

So today is Friday.  I ran 50 minutes Monday.  Sat is typically long run day (2 hours) and Sunday is easy 40 minute recovery run and a longer trainer session.  I would normally either take the day before the long run off or do an easy 45 minute run.  Should I just forget about the missed days and continue my normal week, or should I try to "catch up" a little and do one of my 80 minute runs today and an easy run tomorrow and long run Sunday?

I would say that your running is a good point right now and you really have nothing to worry about for any better fitness leading into the HM.  To play catch up could throw your body right back into turmoil and drive your immune system further down that it was already.

I think you should just pick up where you left off.  Tomorrow should be just another day in the schedule.  Allow time next week to pick up a little bit of time/distance before you begin to taper, if you plan to do a taper.  (I suppose Jeff would agree that you shouldn't take a long taper too.  I know some schedules can call for a 2 week taper but I think that is far too long.

Just make sure you take some fuel along and you'll be fine.  For my 20 milers I always had a gel or two or maybe a package of Clif Shots.  The shots I thought were the BOMB!  Just make sure your pace is easy and light and don't break into any kind of faster miles despite feeling really good.  Just get this one under your belt and then start to adjust things later.

I would wish you luck but you really don't need any.  I'll just go ahead and say good job instead.  Good job!

Sorry I have been away from the forum and training today but I was busy shopping for this \/\/\/\/\/\/

Now its not a Trek Speed Concept but this will do for my first tri bike.  I figure I'll build this one up a little over time.  It did come with Ultegra derailleurs and shifters and a carbon fork.  I'll have to get some faster wheels later and a new lighter, faster cockpit.  These things will be much easier on my budget in a slower process.  I go for a fit Monday but I am planning a ride tomorrow to give it a nice test run.

I'll also get a better pic up tomorrow.  This one's pretty dark.

SWEET RIDE, DIRK!!!! Kiss

Both my tri bike and road bike are Felts.  I LOVE them!  They fit me so perfectly.  (A friend of mine used to be on their engineering team so I might be a bit biased.)

Have some fun on that bike this weekend for me.  I'm hoping to get out on a quick ride tomorrow if the coughing moderates.  Currently, I have a wicked headache due to all the coughing.
