I'm bumping us to 400

very, very quietly. Beth's and my espionage is working. I have it on authority from a member of the wolfpack that they know they are not going to win the challenge. If I have anything to do with it, they're not gonna win the war of words, either.

this one is my favorite running picture - shows the pain. it was taken in my first tri year ago. that time, i didn't love running. i love running. i love running.

a bit back to obesity issue. what do you guys think, what is the main reason for the whole phenomena? seems to be that usa and uk are the worst - rest of europe isn't nearly that bad. and rest of the world of course...

Actually it horrifies me to admit that after the US the next country with an obesity problem is Australia... go figure

As for why? Im not sure... look at the stereotypical Aussie lifestyle... its no conducive to being overweight so something is going wrong somewhere.....

The run was pretty hideous

Yanti, I give you lots of extra credit for getting out and running when you feel so lousy! Too bad we can'tlog that in for some miles for our AWOL team member

Chrissy, I vote for dropping the AWOL party form our roster. We're all working too hard to get pulled down by a slacker

Yup, I was trying to give her a few days this week as benefit of the doubt, but she will not added to our tally this week and will be dropped. So her 0% will not count against us!

Hi - who are you waiting to report in? Can you let me know the details at the next weigh in so I know?

I dont think you are the only team with a no show... I think the other newbie team is having the same issue...

I love running, I love running.

To me, there are several reasons that obesity is so common in the US. ( I can't speak for the UK)

In order of importance from most important to last:

Lack of personal responsibility: It is the choice of the individual to eat unhealthily and not exercise. Here in the US, and probably everywhere else, most people have a feeling that it is always someone else's fault. "If McDonald's didn't make that burger and fries, I wouldn't have to eat it."

Availibilty of junk food: It is everywhere. It's in the vending machine at most offices. It's at the food stores. It's at most restaurants, where the food may be healthy but they serve you enough for 2-3 people.

Schedules: People let themselves get so busy that they don't leave time to cook or eat properly. To me, a weak excuse, but one I still use when I get home at 8:30 pm after picking up my kids from whatever event, and we call Papa John's Pizza.

But it's all about the choices the indvidual makes.

Cat, I'll PM you just in case you don't see this, but Cleavitt finally replied to my PM - she said she is not dropping out but she is having a hard time logging and postings - she says it keeps spitting stuff back to her and won't let her log or post...Hmm...is there any way we can help?

And to answer your question - People here eat larger amounts of processed food and fast food. Portion sizes at fast food places and restaurants are too large. People don't walk as much, tv/video games/computers keep people inside. I know that TV/video games and computers exist in Europe, but from my limited experience there, staying with families (exchange program), TV didn't seem to be as "central". I was in Paris in the late 90s before internet became really crazy, so I don't know what kind of an influence that has now. But I do know that they don't eat like we do. And they walk a lot more. And that makes a BIG difference. Americans have this sort of "bigger is better" mentality about everything - we are definitely a culture of greed. Everything is fine in moderation, but it seems like very few people in this country know what that means. And now ouur people are getting bigger, which is NOT better.

I agree with you.  We (US) on a whole are lazy and want everything bigger! Just hope that my girls are getting the clue that you have to work on your eating habits and be active. Thank god I have decent genes and don't really struggle with weight because my diet sucks!!! I really should be better at picking the right foods.

Both my girls are excited that our tri club will be starting a kids team next year.  They both want to start doing tris. They are going with me tomorrow for a 1 mile fun run while I do the 5K. They both did a 5K in the spring.  They are 15 and 11. I'm so very proud as you can read!!

Hope everyone does well with the running this weekend!!

I know this is a bit late but here is a pic from the Giant Acorn. I was working hard and it shows.  This is the first pic ever that I actually look like I'm working then smiling for the camera. LOL

Love all the pics.. I can't seem to get any of my pics in a album because they are to large and haven't figured out how to resize them.

I'm sad that we can't download the pics from Giant Acorn. The photographer for the Luray Sprint posted all of the photos and we could grab 'em for free. I really want my pics but I kind of don't want to pay $50 for them Maybe my parents will buy me an early X-mas present

I cut and paste them to a word doc and they did ok.  I only paid for a CD from my first race.  MY hubby usually is there and takes some but he stayed home that day.

Yeah, I had a friend there taking pics (I coerced her to come to do just that, otherwise I would have been alone), but she didn't get any of me finishing, and none of me on the bike. I do have some swim pics though and one of me getting out of the water, which is nice. Also some pre-race shots.

I also have a daughter and this has been one of my concerns as well.  I'm happy to say that so far, so good - in that department - she is 17 and has a very healthy body image.  She is very active in sports and has developed fairly decent eating habits

And, I will be honest with you all. I am proud of myself and what I have accomplished. I feel strong and beautiful!

My goal is to have younger women say - damn! I hope I look that good when I'm her age -

Amen! This is exactly how I feel these days. My goal is to have other women (and certain men) tell me they can't believe I'm a triathlete

Its too cold and rainy this weekend.  Make sure y'all stay out of that weather and logging miles.  And treadmills?  Blech!  Take it nice and easy.  You deserve it.  No, really, you do.

Clearly dear Donkey Man missed our significant Southern California contingent (and Bahrain, where the weather is maybe too nice ... ) and I'm glad it's nice on the mideast coast, too!
