No posts in a month? Are we all done? I'm stoked--I was injured (hip) for a month--I tried to go too hard after my Philippine trip and hey, I'm old, but I'm running through it. I haven't swam in two months--they closed my club. I just joined a new club and they have a triathlon club--I never knew! The club owner has competed in over 20 70.3 races and 2 ironman events. I'm going to get a winter training program next week. They have about 25 people that train together.

Anybody still training or racing?

I'm focusing on running at the moment, and coming off a case of shin splints. Not sure how/why I got them, but there they were, so I cut back dramatically on everything.

And ate. And ate. So the scale is not my friend at the moment.

I have the Goofy Disney weekend in eary January: 5k on Friday, 1/2 marathon on Saturday, full marathon on Sunday. And then after that, I don't know.

Ironman just announced a 70.3 in Miami in late October 2010. That could make for a great beach trip!

Greg & David,
Wish you a fast recovery, being injured ain't fun at all!! It's the closest thing to being in JAIL!! Didn't meant to make you feel bad, just trying to say that I feel your pain!

I probably mentioned that I ran the Virginia Beach Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon.  It was a blast! Highly recommended race. 22 bands on the course of the race and the whole town cheering. Beautiful end at the beach boardwalk.
I wanted to finish <2hrs. Well, went home with a 2:00:06  yeap, 6 costly seconds.

Heading next weekend to Melbourne, Fl for my first Olympic Triathlon and I'm pretty exited about it.  With all my traveling, training hasn't been optimum but I think I can finish. The goal is <3hrs, but again, I want to finish healthy.
Yesterday got a good 4000 mts swim and today a nice 40 miler on the bike. Tomorrow going for 10 maybe 11 miles and THAT'S IT! I'll taper down a little to save some energy for the race. The only bad thing it's that I haven't been able to get any open water practice and this is in salt water!!! The banana river. I read reviews and the water gets choppy. Any advice David?

I will continue training in the winter. Have my last race, a little local sprint. I really would like to try a 70.3 next year and would hate to loose fitness. Swimming will be the anchor, not sure how I can handle particularly the biking.
Any word is welcome guys. Thanks

Best advice I can offer on the swim is to just take your time. You know you can do the distance, so settle into the water, realize that there's going to be some chop, and get it done.

Good luck!

Thanks Greg. That's good advice. On races when I consiouslly think about relaxing (on the water) it always helps. In this case in particular it will be crucial and I'll be thinking of your words.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I want to do it in less than 3hrs, if I can swim at 2'/100mts or better, I gues I'll be fine.
Thanks again

Sorry for my late race report:
First Olimpyc in Melbourne, Fl. AWESOME race, beautiful course and great organization.
Long lines to get inked, racked in the wrong place and cought it right before going to the start line. (like I needed more excitment!!!)
Weather was totally unseasonally HOT. Water was 89 degrees. Deep water start, I went on the second wave at 7:30 AM.
Had trouble with "directional control" but overall a good swim. Paced a bit too much.
Bike, was really fun, beautiful Melbourne along the Banana river. Didn't expect hills in South Fla. We hit a BIG caouseway across the river and thre other smaller bridges.
The run, I'll start by saying that the race organizers are EVIL!!! Right off the bike we went up and down the big bridge and back for more!!! Temperature went to 95 degrees and that's when things turned ugly. Thankfully I did a decent job with hydration and food. Crossed the line to find my wife and kids cheering for me, what a better reward????
Achieved my goal of less than 3 hrs, something like 2:57:56, not by much but...... mission accomplished.
Thanks Greg for all your help.

Next year: 70.3 Augusta, GA

I signed up for Vineman 70.3 in CA next summer. So--I'm in it for another year. It's a world qualifyer for 70.3s, and will have a ton of pro's . If I can go under 4 hours I could come in the top 5. Just kiddin--I'll shoot for 5:45 this time. I'm running about 18-20, biking about 100, swimming about 4. Is that too much off season work, David? So far my injuries are all healed. How/what are the rest of you doing?

By the way--I have a cross country kid in my AP Government class that runs 5 minute miles (for several miles) and he didn't even qualify for state. That's just sick and wrong. I can't run 8's.

Also, I got one of those swimp3 players because swimming is boring me to death. So far, it's helping a lot.

Oooh, what's the sound quality in those swim mp3 players?

And those are some awesome goals! You'll for sure make them. The winter season is a great time for some base building and healing of any niggling injuries.

As for me, I'm training for IM Canada (it's Aug 29 2010). 2 months of training in, 10 more to go... things are looking good. I'll probably get in about 2 70.3 races in before the IM.

Currently, I'm healing one injury: a sprained ankle. Everything else is finely tuned and feeling good. Now it's just about staying motivated throughout the winter. I've got a 2-3 week bike/run trip to Florida to keep me happy, and a potential 1-2 week trip to Hawaii as well.

How is everyone else doing?

You're going Ironwoman!! Wow. I promised my wife I wouldn't and for now, I'm staying with 70.3. Let us know what you're learning and how you're training.

The Swimp3 sound is good, not perfect, but better than I thought. The only thing I don't like is you either need to have your tracks ready and play them or spend a lot of time getting the tracks you want. It's hard (for me) to move around and locate tracks/albums easily like an Ipod. I'll probably get used to it, though and get better. Right now I'm finding I waste workout time messing with it so it's easier just to pick something and stick with it. Remember, too, I'm 41 and not a tech nut.

Anybody out there anymore? I'm training away, trying to get ready for another year. I have two olympics and one 70.3 scheduled so far. I wouldn't mind keeping this thing going if you all want to.
