Okay, I just put in all my times for my training log. I realized that I could have really pushed myself a lot more. I am excited about June now because I have this experience under my running belt. Plus, now I know where to really focus for my training.

Did I tell y'all I signed up the the 1/2 marathon in September? I am nervous about it but I like the challenge. Don't worry, I am still a tri girl at heart!

Congrats Carrie! Yes racing is the fun part.

20 mile trail race in 2 weeks at 5000 feet altitude going up to 6000 feet.

Next day start a tri class at the local community college. The instructor is a certified tri coach, no idea what level.

Dumb plan of the week is to put the bike in the back of my g/f car every day, take the class and then ride 20 miles home. Not sure how long that plan will last.

Carrie:

Think of the 1/2 this way - easy 10 mile warm up - then race the 5k!!!

We know you can do it!!! 5k is nothin'

Carrie - great job on your tri this past Sunday!  I found out the same as you when I completed my first last fall.  The race is the best part.  All of the fun makes the hard work leading up to it worth it!

That 1/2 mary will get your running going.  I did my first and only 1/2 mary last spring and it helped my running alot.  The base that you will create will make those short distance tris easy!

I have mixed feelings about the 1/2 marathon. I mean, I am excited about the challenge and am hoping to drop some more weight with the training but I am missing out on some great tri's up here. I wish I would have done more for my first season. The improvement on my running is always welcomed!!

However, my weakest link is biking. I am just so slow. I am really trying to push myself now during my rides. My goal is to maintain a 13.0 average speed, but in the back of mind what I know will really help is shoes. I just hesitant to put that much money in this. With only one more this season, it has to be the the first thing I buy next season.

It is one of the best investments you can make but be sure you get a good shoe with a carbon base. Its safer and will improve your riding. They do last a long time and there is a lot of riding time left. Are you riding a road bike?

I agree on shoes!!! They get my vote - terrified of them last March - now won't ride without them!! I got Pearl Izumi - look pedals - you will never go back - try them w/ a friend - my best freind caught me before i fell over trying to clip out the first time!! Priceless!!

my3sons - 2007-05-07 9:29  I figured out for me that my race is to the start line and my reward is the actual race. The finish line is the bonus!

Congratulations on your race!  I love that line you wrote - it is so true! Smile

I just bought my first shoes last week, and I won't wear anything but them now on the bike.  I'm also only planning on 2 tri's this year, but I'll be spending countless hours on the bike before and after the races.  They've already made a big difference in my speed, reduced muscle fatigue and are much more comfortable and easier on the sole of your foot!

Where is everyone? I actually had to go to the second page to find our group. But I do have a serious swimming question.

How important are flip turns? I just started swimming in January and just started working on flip turns...umm...last week. I am not too bad at them, but it really screws up my breathing. I get a good distance and speed with a good push off.

So, do I work on my flip turns or forget them and perfect my push offs?

At our local club races we are not allowed to do flip turns. There are a lot of new entrants and we want to insure they have equal opportunity to compete.

I have never done them but plan on learning if I ever get time. I think it would improve the workouts and you never know when a race will allow them. Practice both I say.

Hi

Swimming people all say do the flip turns - they give you more consistancy in pacing - overall flow is better - i finally got the breathing sorted out - keep working them!! It gets better!!

Carrie,

I think flip turns are very useful.  First off, they force you to control your breath and don't allow you to take that extra breath the most people take when they grab the wall and then push off.

I use to be very anti-flip turn, but then realized that in a pool environment, they are very useful.  It allows you to be consistant and it also helps you to work your breath control.  Things like exhaling underwater and "emtying" out your lungs before the next breath are exagerated using a flip turn.

and the other byproduct, IMHO, is that you get faster because you can usually keep up with the faster lanes because the 'swimmers' are doing them and you can use them to really push yourself.  I found that once I started doing flip turns I was able to stay closer to the people in the fast lane and therby push myself harder.

And they just look really cool to someone watching.  If that's important to you.  :P

Hey all, I guess everybody is busy training and racing since it is summer. I have a tri this Sunday.

I have made a HUGE decision to drop out of the 1/2 marathon training. I just can't stand to run that much. Training is boring and I lost my excitement. So I am now training for a fall tri. It is the same course as the one I did a few weeks ago. I am so excited about the change. I just love tri's. I went swimming today for the first time in weeks. It felt great.

It is good to be back!
