jjcnbg - 2010-05-04 7:42 PM Alright some more questions for you experienced 70.3 racers.  I am trying to put together my race plan and I am not sure what to expect exactly.  I am used to the amenities of the full ironman so I am not sure what we are responsible for.

With transitions, am I understanding correctly that we are responsible for our own transition bag and we leave it next to our bike?  Do they give us bags to use like in the fulls or do we have to literally bring a bag of some sort.  What kind of surface is it by the bikes?  Do I need to bring a bunch of towels and water to wipe sand and dirt off my feet during transitions?  When we come back in from the bike do volunteers take the bike or are you responsible for racking it?

The athlete guide is somewhat vague on specifics and I don't want to plan on something being there that isn't.  Thanks guys!!

11 Days 11 Hours 18 Minutes.........
hi u are responsible for all of it. ur own bag, towels, racking your bike. the bikes are on grass. the bag stays with ur spot by ur bike.

Yikes, thanks!  Guess I need to really think through my transitions.  I appreciate the info!

They also don't let anyone else in the transition area who is not racing and doesn't have a bracelet, so if you with someone else who is helping you carry your stuff on Sat, just be prepared to go into transition alone.

Hey hi dewcubs, iam in the same situation as you are: first HIM (rookie), the race will be in the middle of my family 2 week vacation in Disney, except that iam from Brazil. I really need sme tips about the race if you guys could help me.

I have a background as adventura racer, but lost my team and start last november training for long distance triathlon races. Different from many of you I`ve been training all summer (and temperatures here ranges from 70 to 110 these season) so hot races are Ok for me, but iam really concern about wind at bike leg.

Another concern is about equipment, because I will have to buy at Orlando some stuff in the week prior to the race. Do you have any tri store to recommend? I will need a tri suit, bib belt, a Garmin 405 and, believe me, bike shoes.... any idea where to buy those things?

Good luck for you all and thanks for your help.

Yeah, it was the same way at the full distance IMFL which ended up being a problem after the race.  My wife forgot the ticket that would allow her to get my bike after the race and I was in pretty bad shape.  The security held firm and I literally had to hobble/crawl to get my bike and bring it back to the gate for my family to carry back to the hotel.  You would think one of the volunteers would have helped me seeing the shape I was in but nobody did.  Oh well, I know they were just following instructions.

treat it like your local sprint, you bring it, rack it, place it, use it, clean it up.
Dont go overboard and bring the kitchen sink, you only get about 10inch of rack/ground space.
"Keep it stupid simple"...less cluter the better, you dont need 20 gels, sunscreen, 5 water bottle, 2 pairs of sox, a ice cooler, etc by your bike. There isn't room!!
Pack everything in a backpack, un-pack it race morning by your bike, leave the backpack off to side by the fence, do the race, re-pack everything after...very simple.

OK, I'll jump in with a newbie question. Is it best to wear a Fuel Belt during the run, or just take what they give you at the aid stations?

What are you used to using when training?  If you've got a set routine and/or product you prefer to fuel with than wear a belt.  If you're happy with what they're serving up- gatorade endurance I think- then go commando.  I'll have a belt as I've got a drink of choice that i'll mix in with water from the aid stations, but I'm sure there are many who won't wear one. Either way is fine- as long as it works for you.

In my experience it really depends on what you have trained with.  If you are comfortable with Gatorade, Power Gels, Fruit and cookies then do not use a fuel belt.  An aid station every mile is way more then enough.  However, if you have been training with different nutrition or have a very specific regiment then bring the fuel belt.

hi

last year i took the futherest rack space. meaning the last bike on the rack closest to the fence. it worked well. i not only had the space under my bike, but the space next to the rack. i unpacked my gear and put what i needed under my bike and then lined up the rest next to the rack. if your in the middle of the rack there is no space for anything. there is a bit more space than at most sprint tris that i have done, and people at least put their bikes back where they belong. i was the last bike back on my rack last year and my space was still there.

For some reason I just found this thread 10 days before the race.  This is my first HIM, and I'm NERVOUS (the usual stuff - feel as if I haven't trained enough, scared of first HIM).  It's been great reading this thread and I'm going to approach the race as obviously not "in it to win it" but just to finish.  I know the weather will be a factor (I'm from the Chicago area).  The biggest thing for me is that I get all amped up and can't seem to control my heart rate in my races - it gets to 180 bpm and I can't seem to get it back down.  Anyone have any advice?  I'm the usual type-A person that we all are, but I really want to finish this race and enjoy it (and then enjoy my week vacation after the race).

Thanks again for all the postings and allowing me to read them before having the courage to post.

Hey from Bloomington here so just south of you....welcome!!!  My first HIM too and I have just decided to view it as a warm-up for IMWI.  Not going to worry about time but focus on nutrition and pacing. I think as a newcomer I have been focusing too much on what might go wrong and so I have decided to just go with the flow...that is my only advice

K78recz:
First off, nerves are healthy.  You'll run a great race.  As for the HR, I'm a big guy and I get up to 170's / 180's on the run.  I just focus on a good T2 where I make sure I don't forget anything.  Then concentrate on an easy pace, short strides for the first 5 minutes of the run.  Then, I use my walk breaks through the water stations... usually I'm back down and maintain in the high 150's after 3 or so miles.  We'll all be in the same heat.  Concentrate on taking your walk breaks / not blazing out of T2 and you should be fine.

Thanks!  It's been so cool here in Chicago that it's hard to simulate the conditions.  I'm just going to go with the flow too, I was shooting for between 6-7 hours for my first HIM, but I'm thinking 8 hours is more likely.

Thanks - I'm a bigger gal too - 5'9'' and 180lbs - I'm great with HR during practice, it's just racing that I get so anxious about!  If you see a gal with a black "Running Away" wicking hat and white long-sleeve shirt on the run, that's me!!!  I'm feeling much better after reading everyone's responses.

Orange Cycle In Orlando has all of the above.  Good selection of tri suits, bike shoes, bib belt and the Garmin 405
http://orangecycleorlando.com/   Here is their link with directions on how to ge there.  They are a little east of downtown orlando in the College Park Area of town.

Good luck for you all and thanks for your help.

I'm getting excited too!  I'm nervous about how I'm going to fare in the heat, but excited overall!

Are a few of you still going to do the Lucky's Lake Swim on Saturday morning (May 15th)?  I have been wanting to do a Lucky's crossing for over a year now.
