Great job Sam--that first 5K was INSANE!  Although you are not entirely pleased with the result, I am impressed.  Someday, I will complete one 5K in the time it takes you to run 2.  You are going to crush us all at Timberman!

Sam - congrats on a great race.  Great race report.

Wow. You are fast - I know you wanted a better finish, but holy crap.  You will never hear me say, I ran a 5K (your second, BTW) in 19 minutes - "I think I did what I could, but it wasn't real fast" HA! Not real fast? WHAT?

Congrats again, must feel good to have that race under your belt!

Cheers,

Mandy

jterzza-
Thank you for your kind words.  I don't know about crushing at Timberman however.  I'm actually more suited for the shorter stuff, I just really enjoy the longer stuff.

Mandy-
Thank you for YOUR kind words.  "Fast" is relative.  I had 12 others in front of me that I think were "fast".  Anyway, yes it was a good experience and it is nice to have my first race under my belt.  It's interesting that I learn something new (or remember something old) everytime I do an event.  Hopefully I'll iron out more as the season goes on.

REV3 in TN May 9th, Olypic Distance up next weekend!

OH! My wife is registered for the Sunburst Marathon in IN, in June.  She enjoyed her Boston experience to the point that she wants another crack at it.  She wants to qualify early this year and wants me to qualify and run with her.  I said I might give qualifying a shot in the fall if the late summer and early fall events to wreck me.

Peace,
~Sam

Congrats Sam on such a great performance in those conditions and thanks for sharing the race report. You obviously have set very high standards for yourself, hence you're dissapointment with certain aspects of the race. A lot of us can only dream of run/bike/run splits like that. Well done!!

Nice job on the Duathlon Sam!  Mother Nature can wreak havoc on race time/performance, so don't go too hard on yourself.
p.s  why do you have your speed/pace set to metric units?  Did Michigan get taken over by Canada?

Thank you runnerx, Simon, and Mike...

Mike.  That's funny.  Michigan, as far as I have been informed has not been taken over by the Canadians.  However, I have not seen the news and I am not real close to the MI/Canada borders (I'm in West Michigan).  I think that was my input error.  I should have done 3.1/18.?/3.1 and then it would be more obvious for those of us who speak in U.S. Customary units.

Peace,
~Sam

Sam - very impressive race, all I can say is I'd like to draft off you on the run   Or just hop on your back.

I put together a nice training day yesterday - 30 min EZ swim, then a few hours later 60 min bike / 30 min run brick.  Big dinner afterwards.

Train safe!

I am doing OK - I was able to ride the bike home after the spill so that was good.  I had scrapes and bruises on my left side, all mostly healed up except for some pain still in my hip.

The bike is OK too, bar tape messed up and a scratch on the left horn, but otherwise intact.

I took the rest of the week easy, and now feel 100%.

I will admit, though, that I seem to be constantly looking over my shoulder now when I am riding, and mentally it's a bit difficult to focus on speed and power while aero with the nagging thought of cars whizzing by...

be safe!

Glad to hear you are doing well John.

It may be a bit morbid, and altough I have yet to be hit by a car/truck, I can't help but tell myself almost everytime I hear a vehicle approach from behind at high velocity: "this could be sound of my death approaching"

Glad to hear you are doing better John, I can understand why you'd be nervous after that experience. After reading about it I must confess I've been increasingly vigilant around traffic and riding in general. There's not much margin for error on a bike esp in groups.

First race this weekend, really looking forward to it, Bassman Tri in NJ.

It's a 0.5M/30M/4M sprint that I've done before, and looks like there will be some real nice weather for the race also, 80's forecast. Just hope that lake water won't be too cold!

Happy training y'all,
S.

s :

hope you have a great race.

i looked at the venue and it seems to be about as far away in NJ as one can get from where I live.

::sigh::

plus I wouldn't love the thought of 59 degree water even in a full sleeve wetsuit...brrr

good luck !

J,

Thanks! The Bassman website claims "The water temperature has always been in the upper sixties for either the spring or fall race". I really hope that's the case on Sunday....

J- Glad you are doing well.

S- Race weekend!  Love it!  Put the lumber to it man!  I'll think warm water thoughts for you...or will that make me pee my pants?  Anyway, good luck and enjoy watching the rust fall off.  Will you complete the race report on BT for us to see?  It's a pretty cool format not only for others to see, but for you to keep for future reflection.

Peace,
~Sam

Sam - if I have to pee my wetsuit to stay warm I won't hesitate, hopefully it won't come to that.

Yes I will definitely put up the race report for viewing.  I've done this race before and really enjoyed it, I'm driving down to the Bassman State Park the night before to camp (in a Lean To?) with my girl and get up to race so I'm excited about that part also. As long as the bears keep their distance.

Hold on...I thought peeing in the wetsuit was a requirement?  Regardless, it's one of the most juvenile, enjoyable things about wetsuit swimming, peeing on yourself with no one the wiser and warming yourself up in the process!  Haha, I love it.

Good luck in the race!  If you do come across a bear then just pedal harder, if you get caught on a bike by a bear then you deserve to get mauled (kidding, of course).

My pathetic, awful, injury-riddled April:

April's totals:
Bike:10h 18m 16s  - 187.15 Mi
Run:1h 43m  - 12.5 Mi
Swim:4h 59m 10s  - 15100 M

I hurt my right knee/leg the last weekend of March and things went drastically downhill from there.  A few weeks of rest didn't help so Boston was out, then a few more weeks of rest and it became apparent that I need an MRI and at minimum PT, potentially surgery.  The bike numbers were awful as well, I was off and on the bike in the hopes of eliminating the leg pain but to no avail.  So May will be a completely different story, there probably won't be a single run mile this month but I'm gonna try to average about 150 miles a week on the bike prepping for the B2B (bike race, not IM).  Well on my way after 85 this weekend.

As far as racing, Boston obviously didn't happen and REV3 in June is out as well.  Timberman is the only 'A' race I'm holding out hope for...we'll see what the MRI has to say about that--keeping my fingers crossed!

Hope everyone's training is going better than mine, we've had some beautiful days recently here in Boston, training in this kind of weather is like heaven on Earth.

Congrats Simon, great race!  It sounds like you managed to stay calm throughout--late to transition for setup, rip in the speedsuit, elevated HR on the bike--and stayed within yourself the whole way and didn't panic, which is easy to do, so great work on that.  It looks like you're on fantastic form this early in the season, keep yourself from burning out and you'll throw down a great time at Timberman.

Great job!

I won't find out for at least another week (seeing an ortho) and probably longer (if I need an MRI).   The good news is I can still swim and bike...my roadie and new tri bike are gonna get alot of work the next month or two!

Yeah, the B's are playing some fantastic hockey, it's at least (somewhat) dampening the pain of watching the Red Sox play terrible baseball (as I type this--literally as I'm typing this--Bill Hall is hitting a 2-run HR to put the Sox up 3-0...I like it).
