Weekly totals are a little off because of the all the snow we've gotten.  I finished my "week" on Monday when I got my long run in.

I'm glad I live in the south.  I bet there will be an increase in the November birth rates.

BamaDC - 2010-02-10 9:31 AM How was everyone's training last week?  It was my biggest run week in awhile.  This week is swim focus and resting the legs a bit for a half mary.  Hoping to get in 14,000 to 15,000 yards swimming and a 1:30-1:32 half mary.

Swim: 8500yd
Run: 25 miles

Relatively easy run week.  Should have been higher, but the weather was very variable. This week is an overall light week.  Swim starting to ramp up and will ramp up significantly after this weekend.  Bike starting after this weekend.

Hope to see you at the half this weekend - we need to figure out how to meet up.  It will be a big crowd, though, so it may be hard to just run into each other!  (I'll be the guy dying two steps over the line at ~1:40 or so)

Should be an "interesting" race with the 15mph winds that are predicted for Sunday.  Funny enough you said you would have skipped the Red Nose Run.  Well, with the wind this one may be as bad or slightly worse!

I always park in the lot southwest of the 8th Ave and 19th St.  I get there way too early.

I've read your reports.  You get there way too early. ;-)

Are you going to hang around after the race?  I should be done at 1:40-1:42 or so (unless the wind really is as brutal as it might be, then perhaps somewhat slower).  I'll be wearing pretty much all dark stuff - pretty much the same stuff as I wore at the Red Nose Run (here, here, and here).  Please ignore the picture quality - I look like I am powerwalking in the first one (I wasn't) and dying in the last two (I was - that was at the finish).  I've definitely got the "hammered death" pose down pat! LOL

I'll probably even wear the dorky sunglasses if it is cold and windy enough.

had a swim leeson this morning. My coach pointed out what i already knew. My tempo is out of whack. It appears my breathing dictates my tempo. She shuggested a tempo trainer so that I would fit breathing into my stroke rather than changing it. Any experience with a tempo trainer? Suggestions?

If you show up tomorrow you're going to be about 10 miles short on distance. ;-

The 5k is tomorrow (along with the kids Marathon).   The half on Sunday will be a tad warmer,  but with a decent chance of freezing rain.  Woohoo!  I just love freezing rain.

I'm having a similar problem but I haven't tried anything like that.  My coach has me do this drill where I stand in chest deep water and just practice breathing but submerging just enough to cover my nose.  The idea is that you can practice breathing so you get used to thinking about breathing without really thinking about it.  It also helps you find what your natural breathing pattern.  It's kind of goofy but I've found it helpful.  Now I'm able to breath every 3rd or 4th stroke with much less difficulty.  I'm also trying to teach myself to breath on both sides because I've found that breathing every third stoke is much more natural/comfortable for me.  However, learning to breath on the "wrong" side has it's own set of problems...

Cool - I was down there all morning.  Wife did the 5k in ~27:15, way faster than she had gone before.  Older son did the kid's marathon and finished his mile in 8:46.  A bit cold, but otherwise a nice morning.

Hope to see you out there tomorrow to say hi.  I should be finishing about 10 minutes behind you.

(Good thing you picked up your packet today - no packet pickup tomorrow!)

Calves and hamstrings are toast - same reason, slower time.

Pretty crappy week.  The run numbers look high but it's really the result of the snow pushing two long runs into last week.  That combined with all the extra work I'm doing with the snow has really worn me out.

Very cold this morning.  About 37 degress.  Right knee on top is sore and hurting.  Hope it feels better in the next couple of days. Maybe should have backed off on the 13.1 mile run Sunday.  It started bothering me Sunday afternoon.  It felt better this morning when I woke up but after the bike was sore again.  Going to play it by ear and may just swim Tuesday and rest it to see if I can run on Wednesday.

Total for the last few weeks.  Not a very stong week last week except for the run.  I did no swimming but will try and hit the pool 3 times this week.

Patellar knee pain.

Did a search of my knee pain I am having after my 13.1 mile run Sunday.  The knee started hurting in the front area of my knee cap a couple of hours after the run.  When I woke up this morning it was better and I did my 1.5 hour bike ride.  I didn't push but now it is hurting again.  The course I ran yesterday is more hilly than I do my M-F runs with.  I think I am having Patellar pain based on how it hurts and the research I did.  I plan on resting it Tuesday and just swimming Tuesday and skip the bike.  I will see how it feels and may do a bike on Wed and see how it feels.  The research I saw is that rarely does this injury require surgery but states rest and not do do other forms of exercise that bend the knee which biking does.  Anyone have thoughts or had pain like this?  How long before it subsided?  I will see how I feel Wednesday moring and if it is still tender I will rest again and only swim.  If it feels okay I will just do a 45 minute ride instead of the 1.5 I had planned.  What do you guys think?  Am I in trouble here?  This is scaring me!

There was a video just posted here where a guy talks about overuse injuries (it was the part 2 if I remember) - patellar femoral pain being one of them.  He mentioned a specific set of strengthening exercises to get rid of that pain.  I'd at least look into that.

One thing to note in your 2010 time is to discount the 10k time - the mile markers after mile 3 were way off.  My time is marked as 45:19 (yeah right).  I ran more like a 46:55 based off of GPS.   In fact at mile 3 it had me at 19:45 - a pipe dream and off by more than a tenth of a mile.

Just sayin'.

While we're at it the course was different in 08.  The point is it takes time and consistancy.

GPS sucks for hilly courses so, I'll go with the USATF certified course.  The 10K spilt was in the same area as last year. My HR averages for the first 6 miles were all 170 plus.  So 10K time is close.

If anything mile 3 was off. 5:26 I doubt it.

1 - 6:36
2 - 6:44
3 - 5:26
4 - 6:56
5 - 7:04
6 - 7:01
7 - 7:25
8 - 7:15
9 - 7:07
10 - 7:04
11 - 6:40
12 - 6:53
13.1 - 8:47

Mile 7 is very slow for a reason.   I'll included that gem in the RR.
