Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Alana: Congrats on finishing the race! I read your race report and was impressed. You are way to hard on yourself. Way to hard. Here are the facts as I see them: 1) Despite injury - you have pressed on and continue to work out. Most people would just quit but not you. I am hobbling myself and I frankly gave up the fight this week. You didn't - Kudos. 2) Part of why you didn't do better has to do with fatigue and general health. With the exception of a few Kenyans, no one runs well with a fever. Plus - your stomach ache from the 5 hour energy drink didn't help either. So, you must take these things into account when you are judging your results. 3) This is your first race. You learned a ton and that knowledge will no doubt help you in the future. I don't quote the Bible often - but one of my favorites is - Fight the fight, finish the race, keep the faith. You are fighting the fight, you have finished the race, now you just need to keep the faith! Or, as Oprah might say, "You go girl!!!" PS - Check out the quote from TR in my signature... and have a great week! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Good morning. We are going to start the challenge today, so start logging. I am going to try and run today, but it's raining out up here. It's hard to try and get your work outs in when traveling. Hopefully I will be able to go out for at least a half an hour later. Have a good day. |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED We are going to use Alana's race report as an example for those who don't know what they are. When you finish a race, you can do a race report like Alana's (click here). Once you fill it out, you post it and it goes into the race report section. It's also another way for us to support and tell how great our fellow triathletes are. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi All: Just checking in... still strugglin with pain in my hips and legs but I'm still at it. I hope to get another referral for PT and maybe that will do the trick. I've signed up for a couple of races including the season opener and plan to break my tri PR of 1:40:00... This week, I'm gonna hit the pool twice and walk a couple of miles and see how I feel at the end of the week. Good luck to everyone in the challenge! DQ |

Extreme Veteran 310 | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED I went to the doc yesterday to get a bump on my leg looked at and the doctor had me in surgery an hour later and removed it. So..... now I can't swim for two weeks. What CAN I do? I was thinking maybe working on upper body strength. Or maybe cycling on a really really light resistance. My stitches are on the front of my quad so I have to be kinda careful there. Any ideas? I don't want what fitness I have to completely get away from me. Thanks. |

My stitches were behind my knee right above the joint and I was able to cycle and run. As long as your are not stressing out the area -i.e. pulling at it- then you should be OK. Just start slow and test it out. That's what I did. Definitley get some upper body stuff in and don't forget core - if not running - try walking, elliptical, etc... 2 weeks go fast!. |

My stitches are on the front of my quad so I have to be kinda careful there. Any ideas? I don't want what fitness I have to completely get away from me. Thanks. My first ideas - SHOP for new tri-stuff (it takes some research). Get a good book and read (tri-related or not). I would work on all that stabilizing stuff that you never seem to have time for when you can run, bike and swim (until you get hurt and the PT tells you that you have to stop running & biking and do some stabilizing work). Examples - core stuff, shoulder stabilizing excercises (rear delt, rotator cuff), lower back, etc. Try out some things that take time to figure out, that don't really seem like working out, because your spending time figuring out how to do them! If you put in 2 weeks of core/stabilization work, you'll feel a lot stronger when you start back up. You're only as strong as your weakest link! Enjoy your recovery! |

Master 1619 Hingham, Ma | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Morning folks. Sorry I have been MIA. It's been a long couple of days. I have a couple of more hours in Syracuse, then driving home. You guys are doing great on the IM challenge. I have a lot of catching up to do. I haven't done anything the past couple of days. Having a set schedule is key to this training thing, something I haven't had in a while. I need to set it up and stick to it. Anyway, I will catch up with you all when I get back. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Out of the loop a bit right now--into work at 530am so didn't get in my usual early morning work out--BUT noticed it's pretty bright and sunny out--hope it last. Plan on doing a nice run "outside" today. Must say after running just 3 miles ont the tread-mill my shins and knees were bothering me during the night (couldn't be my age!) As far as I am concerned, nothing beats running the roads and trails. |

Veteran 280 Glens Falls | Subject: RE: Boston Beginner's Mentor Group - CLOSED Anyone do beach running? Leaving on a vacation in less than 2 weeks for an island--we will be there for 2 weeks, plan on really up my training then. Nice long swims, plenty of dirt roads for running (heard beach running is a good work-out) also we have a couple of mountain bike there--so should be covered in all areas. Going to get a taste of the good life for a while and forget all the cares of the world for a short time. We have the use of my sister in-laws house for the entire time-so with the added sun I should be able to put in the extra time I need before the Spring races start-time to push myself. Also looking for hints on open water swim-especially open ocean--only have rivers and lakes in my area so any useful advice will be appreaciated. www.isleculebra.com |
