I'm sure you will get back at it when you can Amanda.  Good luck with the home contractors.

junthank - 2011-03-01 11:30 AM Good to see you back Amanda.  Looks like you enjoyed your weekend (diet and all).

Now its time to get back in the pool

I wish! Unfortunately I have contractors at my house all day tomorrow, so I will be lucky to get just a run early tomorrow morning. Such a bummer...

Jeff, it seems like I've been "quit" lately, LOL.....haven't done much but recover from being sick and tired.  Gaining speed to get consistent again.  Haven't been completely out of it, been listening to a swim tri coach podcast.  I like getting info while multitasking, and i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my iPod!

The pool will have to wait until next week....starting a 48 hour shift tomorrow.  Should be able to get elliptical work in.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Damn spell checker - it should of known that I meant "quiet" not "quit".

iPod's - great invention - although I have gone though about 5 of those things.  Thank goodness Best Buy has a 1 year warrenty.  They don't like sweat.

My iPods last forever, but I really only use it when I'm flying.

I am really looking forward to our tri challenge next weekend! I am trying to figure out the order I will complete the events. I would love to do the traditional swim/bike/run, but I don't think that will work out with my schedule. I am thinking swim on Friday morning, run Friday evening, and bike on Saturday. Or, run on Friday morning, bike on Saturday morning, and swim Saturday afternoon (reverse tri!).

I thought I had left mine in the hotel this weekend, but found it...in the dryer after I washed my race clothes Cry

Race went okay, thanks for asking! Definitely wasn't the time I wanted, but I rarely plan to PR at a Disney race. They're generally too crowded and more about fun than fast. Two more next month to try to PR.

I'm realizing it's March and I need to get this swim thing pulled together. I can do the distance, but only if I stop every 25m. That's only two months to train and get it smoothed out. Fortunately, it's warming up so the outdoor pool is becoming an option.

Flying in the sense that you are going really fast on your bike?

S/B/R next weekend - anything goes Amanda as long as it's done within 48 hours.

Doing mine next weekend is probably not optimally timed.  It's actually a recovery week for me.  I'll be coming off 2 straight 11+ hour/weeks to an 8 hour/week.   The plan has a 1500 Swim TT scheduled for that Saturday with a 1.5 hour Easy Ride followed by a 30 minute Aerobic Run on Sunday.  I'm going to change it to a 2000 meter aerobic Swim followed immediately by a 56 mile aerobic ride early Saturday morning.  Then I'll do a 13 mile Run on Sunday later in the day (that will give me a little more recovery time after the bike).  The following Monday I'll cash in my weekly "Easy Day" chip.

Bummer on your ipod.  I have got to have mine when I do my workouts indoors.  I never wear it while riding outdoors. Occassionally I'll wear it while running outdoors.

Way to throw down #17 HM Melissa!!

10 weeks until FIT.  Regarding the stopping at every 25 meters, how long are your RI's (rest intervals) when doing your 25 meter laps (10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, etc...)?
Obviously you want to do the entire distance consecutively but that will come in time with more work in the pool.  It's not a "race requirement".  If I remember correctly Melissa I believe when you do your swim workouts they are usually overdistance (i.e.. greater than the distance of your upcoming race).

In addition to working on your technique in the pool I would 1st try to gradually reduce your RI times (if they are greater than 15 seconds).  After you get comfortable with that gradually increase the distance that you swim consecutively.  Start at 25 and try to extend that to 30, then 40, then 50 etc....

Remember:  Slow down.  Think:  Relaxed breathing pattern.

Melissa, re the the swim....I was in the same boat as you, could do the distance but was winded at every 25m's.  The last time out I tried to swim as slow as possible.  It's crazy but my average time actually dropped because I wasn't having to rest.  I swam non stop for somewhere near 800 m, which I hadn't done before this.    I haven't been able to get back to the pool yet, but when I do, I'm going to try to get that easy going stroke back and work on just keep moving vs fighting to get to the end.   I also have to remind myself that this isn't something I can get done and over with in 10 mins.  I am going to have to swim for 20 mins, so relax and take it slow.  Hope that helps.

Good to know about iPods and sweat.  I took it in the sauna today, didn't seem to hurt it.  Thanks also for the reminder about the virtual race, forgot about it. Sealed

BREAKING NEWS!

This morning I discovered that I can swim freestyle even though I haven't finished the TI program. The pool was too crazy with the University swim team practicing (they even had recorded crowd noise playing really loud for race simulation), so I decided to ditch the TI drills and instead swim 1200 m breaststroke. by then the pool had calmed down, so I tried doing freestyle and it wasn't too bad. I went real slow and concentrated on swimming downhill and rotating my body to breath. I made it another 400 m freestyle, with very short breaks every 50 meters. I'm still going to read through all the remaining TI drills, and incorporate the movements into my full stroke laps.

So Jeff - for next weekend's virtual event, I would like to switch from the Oly to the Sprint so that I can swim the entire distance freestyle. I will probably also do the bike/run as a brick on Saturday.

Happy Saturday morning.  Hope the weather is starting to get better and you get the opportunity to get outdoors this weekend.

Like Amanda I have had a slight change of plans regarding the "virtual TRI".  I think I mentioned previously that next week is a recovery week in my plan so instead of doing my "virtual" HIM distance next weekend I decided to do it this weekend.  So it's a 2K swim and 56 mile bike today and a 13 mile run on Sunday.

Next weekend I'll do an Olympic distance race simulation to keep with the "spirit" of "virtual TRI" weekend.

I hope my peers in the group don't mind and will not revoke my "Hokies Mentoring Grop" membership card!!

Team,

A good one from Joe Friel.  I may never stand on the stage for a podium finish in a race but I'm a big believer in this message.  Hope you enjoy:  http://www.joefrielsblog.com/2010/07/the-key-to-athletic-success.html

Morning Folks,

This morning I read the following blog from Gordo Bryn.  It's a fabulous article that I think details a presentation that he did.  If there is only one thing that you take away from this mentoring thread let it be the items in his message:

Now it is me who has to request a change to my virtual tri weekend. When picking available weekends, I totally forgot that this is spring break week for the University. And I didn't realize it until I was packing up my swim stuff Sunday night! Therefore the pool hours are extremely limited and I will not be able to swim. I have decided not to run the half marathon the weekend of March 19th, so would like to do my virtual tri that weekend instead.

Is this okay with everyone? I know we all wanted to do this the same weekend. I was planning to do the swim portion Friday because the pool is crowded Saturday and Sunday. I could probably make it work, but not being able to swim at all during the week will make my swim leg pretty rough.

~Amanda

Love my Garmin.  No more mapping routes for distances, hitting a watch to get an HR reading, or keeping track of different times for different intervals.

Instructions for use:

1) Hit START button when you start your workout (bike or run)

2) Hit LAP button if your want to record an interval

3) Hit STOP button when you finish your workout

O... I forgot one other step.

4) Hit the ON/OFF button to turn on/off (does that count as 2 steps?)

The time you save will more than pay for the device in 2 months (at least the 305).
