This weekend for me is going to start off with a soccer game Sat. morning for my 10 year old (looks like possible rain out).

I would like 1 30+ mile bike ride and 1 10mile run.

I also have lots of stuff to do around my new house.

I've got 2 weeks until a fun super sprint tri.

My weekend started last night (as it almost always starts on Thursday).  I have already gotten my long run in but I shortened it to 10 miles today to start my race taper/recovery week.  Tomorrow I have a long ride on the schedule and I am going to be looking for something at or over 40 miles and possibly my first group ride.  Then Sunday will be another ride and a 4-5 mile run.

My race taper/recovery week will actually be more of a running taper and allow the bike and swim workouts to stay close to the same as normal.  I figure after the race I will use the following week as a real recovery week for all 3 disciplines and throttle my training back a little.

Jonathan is a crazy swimmer - and biker, by the way.

Bah.....but thank you.

Not a brand new swimmer I guess.  I have been at it almost full time for almost two years now.  As for the 1:14 pace...I can't hold that at all.  My workout consisted of about 2600 moderate pace with a hard 100 thrown in at about 1700yds.  I just gave it my all to see what I could get.  When I am doing like 10 x 100 hard, I am usually around 1:26-1:28 or something.

And Warren is out of his mind...my biking needs work.  I am psyched to finally be happy running and hopefully over next winter I will be able to hold my run fitness and be able to really work on some bike speed.  My plan for this year is to race healthy.  That's it.  My plan for the fall is to run a lot and my plan for the winter is to run and work on the bike.  And of course do whatever my coach says. :-)

I am going to swim in a bit BUT I think Jonathon's 1:14 deserves a challenge.  LOL  I have never went all out for anything other than a 500TT so I think I'll try a 100 at full speed today.  My 500TT's also probably haven't been done the way I would like to do them.  Ideally I would like to have someone a little faster than me swimming next to me to try to push me a little more.  I think the additional competition would provide me with a little more initiative to perform.

Oh yeah, if I can't beat Jonathon's 100 on 1:14.  It will be because I just completed my long run today, I haven't had a recovery week for 4 weeks, I had to work OT last night after getting up extra early for work and any other excuse I can think of later.  LOL

Thanks Jeff. That info is helpful!  My HR monitor is a MIO. I have another one too but it's also not a Garmin.  I have to get a Garmin one of these days!  I'm running 3 days this week.  Sick today though; so I'm trying to get over this head cold first!  My goal is around 30 min for the 5K on Sunday!  I know that's slow to most all of you but for me it will be good.  I've only been running 8 weeks now.

Unless you just plain feel too bad to exercise, running can be a great treatment for a cold.

I understand better than anyone how fitness and speed are relative.  Your goal of 30 minutes is great and if/when you achieve it we will all be excited with you!

8 weeks of running and finishing a 5k is more than respectable.  You must have natural talent...

My 20 year old daughter struggled for months and months to finally make 5k without walking and finishing under 30 minutes.  Then we began training for a 10k which she did impressively.

X2 on the running while felling ill.  I run with a cold whenever I happen to get one (which isn't very often) and I think it helps kick the cold in the tail.  Consider....A fever is a body's reaction to an illness to try to knock the illness out and allow your body to heal and mend.  Running obviously elevates your body's temperature and thereby (in my totally unedjamacated opinion) allows your body to burn the cold out a little sooner.  I had a sinus infection a few weeks ago that had me suffering a bit and I swim/rode/ran through it with no apparent side affects or excessive fatigue that I noticed.

Based on all that I declare you the winner if you make it under 1:27.34  (I did a highly scientific calculation to handicap the effort).

hahaha!  That 100 was after a pretty solid first half workout too.  Make all the excuses you want.  You got me beat in the run by over a minute per mile!!!

My 4 x 500 at race pace workout on Wednesday was pretty tough.  For some reason I couldn't maintain anything faster than 1:30.  Basically the same pace I did my 1000 TT at over a month ago.  No improvement in other words.

On Wednesday....what was your average time for the 500s? (or what were the 4 times?)  What was your rest interval?  And is this meters or yards?

You held your pace very well.

That's better than I can do, but I can't help but be happy that I am swimming as well as I am right now.  Decent improvement over last season I think.

Good job.

That's awesome Bryan!  I seem to have a lot of rides like that lately.

Those are great improvements Jonathan.  And I agree that Dirk gets a 13.74/100 handicap.

This weekend I'm a single dad, and my youngest (9) has his first Special Olympics competition.  He's signed up for the 50, 100, standing long jump and softball throw.  It's a long day for him and with his short attention span so we'll see how it goes.  His brothers will hopefully help out.

As far as training, I'm not sure what I'll be able to get in but I'm hoping to get a longish bike in and a run both days.

Good luck with the 5k Deb.

I got to take this week pretty easy, recovery week. I'm going to the highland games for some sweet competition. Then later on Saturday I get to do a Brick with a 1 hour bike and 40 min run. Sunday looks like a nice open water swim in my wetsuit for the first time, woot woot, and probably a long bike ride if the weather is nice. Have a good weekend everyone.

That graph does a lot to demonstrate exactly how big a deal it is to fight the wind.  But it doesn't just apply on windy days.  You are always fighting the wind (air) on the bike.  Hence the very large focus on aerodynamics.

No matter what kind of bike you ride, air resistance is your biggest limiter and you can go faster by decreasing your resistance.

HA!  YOU'RE KILLIN' ME!!!!

Well I need to report my 100 TT to the group.  It seems with scientific calculation provided by Jeff I have won the officially unofficial competition between Jonathon and myself.  My time with the accounted 13 seconds handicap puts me at the wall at 1:03, or my un-handicapped time of 1:16.  By the time I got done with this 100 I was trashed.  I have never tried to swim that fast for such a short distance.

All's I can say is I am glad I don't have to swim against you, Jonathon.  It looks like between your 6+ feet in height combined with a likely huge wingspan and your fish fins feet I wouldn't stand a chance.  Congratulations!  I'll not make any excuses.  I'll just bow my head in shame and shuffle away quietly into dark room with a box of Kleenex and sit solemnly in my sorrow.  LOL

haha!!  well played.  A lot can affect those quick 100yd intervals though.  I'm sure you could go harder.  Takes a lot of concentration to stay in form at that effort.  Who knew that 100 yds could be so mental!?

Got my long ride in today.  It was a chilly 40 miles.  Went with a group and had a couple slower guys so we kept the overall effort low.  It was really nice.

Thanks guys.  I just got back from the Special Olympics, and I have to tell you it was awesome.  I've never been before, and my guy is probably a year or two away from really being able to do it, but watching him and everyone else was truly inspiring.  What some of these people overcome to compete at all is really amazing.  I admit I'm getting sappier as I age, but I definitely had some lump in the throat moments.

J did the long jump and softball throw.  He was scheduled to run in the 50, but he couldn't hack any more waiting so headed home and we'll tackle that one next year.  I'm off to my nephews first communion, but hopefully I won't eat too much of the Italian spread at the post-party and I'll get in some training this evening.

I hope to embarrass myself by entering the 100 TT challenge this week, though I haven't really done any swimming yet this year.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and the races go well.

Warren,

If you didn't have several lump in your throat moments you should be embarrassed.  I have never been involved in one these events in any form but I definitely understand what some of these folks have to deal with throughout their whole lives.  And I don't think that you are likely getting sappier in your old age, I think you are getting wiser and more appreciative of what things are most important in an individual's struggle through life's ebbs and flows.

Oh and jump into the 100 TT challenge.  As a matter of fact I think everyone should jump into this..............just for fun of course.  We all already know who's gonna win the prize.............Jonathon "fish fins" Gerbodegrant.  [Everyone golf claps]

I think the only thing that was mental was me!  I should have lied about what my time was, just for pride's sake. lol  I think there was a bit of mental aspect to this too.  I never really thought much about it but I think I may use this as a gauge for my speed in the future.  What is bad is I told my daughter what I swam the 100 in and she just kind of looked at my time and walked away.  Her fastest 100 fly is faster than my freestyle.  She swam 100 fly this year in 55 seconds, I don't remember what her 100 free time at.

I too got my long ride in today.  I was looking to get a swim in as well but an immediate "honey-do" came up this morning and I had to pass on the swim.  Now the pools closed.  The ride was the same 40 miles I have been doing but I finally had one without a lot of wind and the temp was fairly decent.  The wind was out of the southwest at 5-10 which isn't much considering what it has been like...........and will be like again.  My effort was about the same as usual but it looks faster because I didn't have to deal with all the wind.
